I really appreciate your turorials. On this type of tutorial I feel a little more time on knife diflection during the application of mud might help. It takes time to master what we call imperfect smooth in NorCal. It is a art to get the right texture. Keep up the great videos!

Just IMO and personal preference but using the coarse sand in the mud makes for a better texture from images I have seen

Excellent video. How do you do this texture when you get to a bullnose corner?

I prefer to texture all the way up to the corners, just like I did around the edges of the ceiling. Then when it's dry, sand the bullnose smooth. No texture to chip off that way and looks better than trying to texture the corner.

I like your video on the skip-trowel texture that you have. In order to have no “voids” between the random patterns, should you first skim coat the entire wall? Also, should you do “layers” of skip-texture?

Awesome videos! Thanks for you time and hard work! Looking at this one, you said you were doing this after you had done the popcorn ceiling. Did you scrape the popcorn or skim coat over it? If scraped, did you skim coat it before doing the texture or has it been primed? The top of the walls are throwing me off. Hahaha Keep showing us how to #DoItRight!

There’s a huge misconception that you have to skimcoat everything. After I remove the popcorn I almost never skim coat a ceiling. The reason this one is white, is I primed it first because I was going to do a swirl texture and then it changed to the skip trowel.

How much sanding is done on the flat joints and corners before applying the texture? Is it buttery smooth like they would be for a flat finish or just good enough and the texture blends it in?

I only sand drywall enough to takeoff things like lap marks and edges. I don’t sand joints to flatten them out except for a little bit on butt joints. and then I just try and leave the finish good enough for the type of texture I’m doing that day. It doesn’t have to be level five smooth for a texture.

Hi, I just scraped a popcorn l on a concrete condo ceiling and it looks like they initially skim coated under the popcorn. Would I still need to apply skim coat before applying skip trowel finish? Thanks!

I'm not really knowledgeable about going over concrete. I've only seen it about once in our area. But the key things are it should be sound, clean and dry. But you might need a bonding primer to go over concrete. I'd check with a paint store on that as they might have better advice.

Question - How do I skim coat over a skip trowel texture? I've sanded and sanded and mudded and mudded and the "veins" of the old texture keep showing up when I skim coat. I used thicker mud and watery mud, I've done your roller method and applied gobs with a knife and pan. I little advice would be nice. Thanks.

You shouldn’t put mud on too watered down. If it’s still showing through you are either putting it on too thin, or you’re sanding it down too much. Often to cover thicker texture, you need to put on one coat, and sand off only the high peaks and then put on another coat before trying to sand it smooth.

Thank you for all the great tips. I'm having an issue where I am applying a skip trowel finish over a painted wall and getting hundreds of pinholes in the finish. Any help?

Whenever you apply drywall mud over a painted wall you will get pinhole bubbles. The thicker you put it on, the worse the bubbles. It is the moisture trying to escape and it can’t go into the wall so it goes away from it. I think it helps to sand the wall with a course grit like 80 grit and that will pull some of the moisture in but you will still get bubbles so put it on as thin as you can and fill in the most notable bubbles when you are done.

I had a problem with pinholes when I applied my second coat of skim coat. The first coat didn’t have any. I had sanded and cleaned my walls with tsp before my first coat. Why would I have pinholes on the second coat and not the first? Needless to say now I have to texture the walls because of all the pinholes. I used your video and created my own texture sponge. It gave me a great texture for the walls. I just dabbed it in and knocked it down. Looked like orange skin. But now I need a texture for the ceiling. Hence why I’m trying to learn skip trowel. Thank you for your detailed videos!

pin holes are the bane of Drywaller ‘s. Sometimes you will get them just from putting mud on a little bit thicker, but they just happen as part of the process. You can usually fix them if you want but they are a pain.

I rarely prime before I texture. After texturing I let it dry thoroughly and then apply one full coat of primer and two coats of paint.

Nass Bahli when I Texture over an old painted wall i sand it with coarse grit first, then texture it. Green label all purpose by USG has a little more adhesive in it and will stick a little better.

Yes, but I generally scrape it to knock off the nibs that caused chattering, and run over it with some 80 grit sandpaper for the same reason.

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY I have another question. This bathroom had paneling on the walls held on with adhesive. I scraped the adhesive off and discovered that there is wallpaper under the paint. I'm tiling about 36 in. up the wall and will be plastering the the rest. Can I plaster over the paint and wallpaper and is there anything special that I should use before applying the plaster besides scraping off loose paper and paint and cleaning the walls?

Huh around here this would be lumped in with Venetian (non hack Venetian mind you) the skip trowel I am familiar with looks like large knockdown

I actually first started doing this 52 years ago but still have over 35 years experience doing it and I have found that texture names and styles vary everywhere you go. But in my area this is just one of several styles of skip trowel. Here Venetian is put on extremely thin in layers with colorant in it and is made out of a different product overall. Nope. Most new homes in this area are done with a skip trowel texture. If I build or buy soon I want it on my walls. I hate the look of totally smooth so it’s a preference. Thanks

i also dont like working without music....but in construction they say loud music is not safe...but what is loud and what is acceptable many times become a cause of arguments....so safety managers just make it no music at all...so i stopped working in construction.....LOL

Awesome tutorial definitely appreciate the hard learned knowledge. Although watching a full grown man in a skirt is a bit cringe worthy, I get the heratige connection we all came from somewhere. Not really a fair analogy because I didn’t show up in a tank top and undies. It’s a kilt. I don’t get why you say that is such an issue because not one single customer of mine ever has. I’ve been told many times that I was hired because I’m the best at what I do, and they hired me for my workmanship and not my fashion. Now if I did new construction, or commercial construction, then yes I would wear jeans and work boots, but I work in peoples finished homes and they don’t care. So I partly chose this career because it pays more, it’s a niche, and I can work in more casual clothing and be more comfortable. So I’m sorry you feel like you have to call it a skirt. But thanks for the support anyway and you dress the way that makes you happy and I’ll do the same. Take care

Why don't you use an offset knife? Theres a lot i could say how you are doing it.... Not trying to be rude but thats more like an exterior stucco look. A good skip trowel job has Medium size dots all going in one direction. -Perry

You’re assuming all Skip trowel is the same in all parts of the country and you’re dead wrong. Nobody in my area does it the way you are describing but it is very common in areas like Florida. And me personally, I highly dislike the dotted look and much prefer the look in our area which is exactly what I did here. It’s all a matter of preference.
