Skoda Octavia RS iV (2019/2020) is a Plug-In Hybrid car with 1.4 l TSI petrol engine and electric motor. System power: 180 kW (245 HP) and 400 Nm. Battery capacity: 13 kWh. Fuel tank capacity: 39.5 l. Previously I checked all-electric range: • Skoda Octavia RS iV el... this time I have for you total (combined range) including fuel.
I filled the fuel tank in 100% the day before and came back to the garage using
electricity only. During the night the car’s battery was charged up to 100%.
I started the whole trip on the next day morning.
The plan was to drive 400 km (~250 mi) in one direction and come back to
the starting point (the same place) on the next day.
Hybrid is the only mode which I used for the most of the trip.
Let’s see how far Škoda Octavia RS iV will go on one tank and one charge!
Result:
I drove with Skoda Octavia RS iV in total on one fuel tank and one charge 901 km (559.9 mi) and 70 km range left. Final fuel consumption: 4.6 l/100 km (51.1 mpg US | 61.4 mpg UK), energy/power consumption / economy 1.0 kWh/100 km (16.1 Wh/mi | 62.1 mpkWh).

Great review ! I must say I was considering buying this car in the start of this year, but ended up choosing the Skoda Octavia Break 2.0 TDI 116hp manual, I know the engine power is not the same but, I have driven 7000km so far and I am averaging 4.6/4.7 l/100 km which is great. the difference in value from my break to the IV model in my country is around 12.000 euros. So considering this and the fact that Diesel is cheaper than petrol here I think the TDI is a best choice .

Nice result and I have nothing against this car and PHEVs, but with my C-HR Hybrid I could easily go under this consumption in similar condition. And yes, I understand I have just 122hp. Less than month ago driving average speed of 85km/h I managed to drive 820km in Germany around 3L/100km with C-HR, 400km of it behind trucks (I was not in a hurry to get into harbor)
@pedrolg

That's pretty impressive. However this is about a long distance test in a PHEV which carries a lot of weight with its batteries to get the 50km daily commute on full electric. So this comparison is just as unfair as comparing yours with a 20 year old VW Lupo 3L which would do 3l/100km as well, and cost 1000 eur to buy.

I honestly don’t see why you should buy a Plug in Hybrid. 1. Fuel consumption? Definitely not. Let me show you a comparison to a Regular Hybrid a Corolla 2.0 Touring Sports tests shown on this channel. Eco City/90Kph/120kph/140kph Skoda Superb: 4,5 liters,5,1 liters, 6,6 liters, 8,1 liters Corolla TS: 3,8 liters, 4,6 liters, 6,2 liters, 8,1 liters As you can see, a regular hybrid consumes less without adding heavy batteries like the skoda has. 2. But you can drive on electric and do something for the environment. Yes and no. The thing is, a Plug in hybrid weights ALOT compared to a normal combustion engine. You have 2 Systems combined. Now it’s not the most efficient system. So in both electric and Petrol you consume more fuel than buying the „1 System“ Well, if you can drive most of your trips on electric (30-60 Kilometers) then why do you even need a combustion engine ? Is it really necessary to carry a heavy combustion engine you’re only using 1-2 times a year ? Why not then buying a fully electric vehicle ? A fully electric vehicle is much cheaper to maintain, much cheaper to „fill up“ and greatly benefits the environment if the energy you’re consuming is not coal energy. But at least for now, (I know these problems won’t be there for those of you reading this 5-10 years later) Most EVs are hella expensive. Apart from that, many models don’t offer enough range for long distance travelers. MOST IMPORTANTLY we greatly lack the infrastructure for EVs. It’s horrible in Germany. 16.000 charging stations of which 50% don’t work , basically hundreds of different cards you have to use to unlock the charging stations. Just look at Tesla. Plug it in and BOOM you’re charging. This needs to be implemented everywhere. So (at least for now) the best thing you can do right now is buying a EV (IF you can ) otherwise buying a used Petrol/Diesel/Hybrid vehicle. If we want to make the world fully electric in the future, it doesn’t make any sense to buy a 2021 BMW 540i.
@1001cars
@1001cars 3 года назад
You missed Octavia to Superb :) We have similar discussions in Poland, instead off having 16 000 charging stations :) I don't want to say what I prefer, what I would choose if I had to buy a car for a city and long trips at the same time. I see two groups of people, for one of them Plug-In Hybrid is a great car, for second definitely not. Both of them want to drive longer trips more than 2/3 times a year, but definitely not day-to-day. It is like one per month driving to his/her family which is far away from his/her home. Second group: has enough space to keep two cars, they have more money to maintain two cars (taxes, insurances etc.), they use electric car for daily driving and "diesel" car for long trips. Pros: you always have two cars, both of these cars are really efficiency (in specified conditions) Cons: if you want to have two cars in a similar price to Plug-In Hybrid car, the electric one has to be very cheap, without much space for passengers, without newest safety and driver assistant systems etc. It is just city electric car. First group: in reality they don't buy Plug-In Hybrid car to save money (my opinion), they buy such car to make every daily trip to the office more comfortable (because of the electric mode). Why? Because they bought the car with all of newest systems, in high/highest trim, this is not a small B/C car it is the bigger/more spacious car. Because such electric car is even more expensive. And - maybe the most important argument - they have POSSIBILITY to make 300/400/500/600 km trip every day without looking for a charging station, or even thinking about it. Also I think, many times the reason is to buy just stronger (more powerful) car without buying big V6/V8 engines (more problematic). You cannot forget about it when you compare Octavia RS iV with Corolla Hybrid. Performance is much better with Skoda. I don't want to say that Plug-In Hybrid cars are better or not. I just want to say I understand people who are interested in such cars. In reality, I think, most of us (let's say 50-70%) can be in the third group: one electric car are totally enough for us (daily driving) and when we want to make a longer trip, we have so many possibilities to rent a bigger car with diesel engine. In reality it is the cheapest way to live. But we have to remember: not everyone want to drive the car which is unknown for a driver, you don't know condition of components, and you have to take so many things from your private car and put them to the rented one to feel comfortable during the trip. Unfortunately you can forget about them later on... and this is the problem. So many of us prefer to pay more for only their car. And this "only their" can be plug-in.

For me, this RS iV was the perfect car. My daily driving is around 40-60km and i can do all of them purely in e-mode. No petrol needed. I also have this summer cottage 290km up north, where i have no electricity at all. I go there twice a month. So it depends on your personal needs do you need a plug in or full electric. For me right now, the plug in is the best option. And the car is great! Good comfort, good power and fun to drive with only combined consumption of 2.1l/100km after 4000km

7h with engine off = aroud 400km. 400km x 4.6% = 18.4 liters With a 4.6% for 900km means 41 liters. Maybe I am missing something, but where is the fuel saved by driving with the engine off for 45% of the trip? If you did 55% on gas, means ~500km with 41 liters = 8.2% consumption. 🤔🤔 Is my math wrong? Cus I fill like they cheating us 😅

You are driving in a city, classic situation: drive - stop on the light - drive - stop on the light. Finally, during the 30 minutes of the trip you drove let's say 15 km, but the combustion engine was turned off for 8 minutes. What distance you drove with combustion engine off?

I'm driving a diesel and it seems to me that with this kind of trip I could average 4 max 5l/100km including/combining highway at 140km/h. I'm averaging from 4.3-5.5l/100km without trying and currently doing about 3500km/month In the end, even though the petrol engine was off for 7 hours (50% of the trip) you need to sum the petrol consumption and the electricity cost, don't you? You didn't charge the battery during the trip? Did you drive with lot of attention to fuel consumption in this video? Ho much does a fuel trunk of stuff affect the consumption of the battery?

From personal experience, avoid paying money at least for the infotainment because it's crap (it restarts randomly which is not only anoying but also dangerous since I expirianced several times that it restarts during the parking where some of supporting tools which you expect to be working stopped working). If you add to this that Skodas customer support was crap. First Skoda partner in my home town made apperently 3 upgrades of the system which didn't do anything and after going to second service in another town, they "couldn't" support me since I already reported this issue on another Skoda partner. If you add to this that front parking sensors didn't work correctly and the first mentioned Skoda partner just told that they couldn't do anything about it without even taking a look at it, I was realy annoyed by the car - after serveral months I figured out that the registration plate frame (originaly installed by Skoda partner and not demaged in any way) was slightly bent which was causing the issues to the front parking sensors and the fix was easy but could and should be detected and fixed by Skoda partner. In general, IMHO nice looking and expensive car with failures on basics and crapy support!

In a city you should use electric mode, on highway (at ~140 km/h) you will use fuel only. So after 10 km in a city you will loose 10 km range (around 17-18% of total usable capacity). On highway at 140 km/h you will use 8,1 l/100 km, so the total average of fuel consumption will be: 8.1 l/100 km on 190 km distance will be 15,4 l in total 15,4 in total on 200 km distance means 7,7 l/100 km and this is the consumption you will see on the computer after such trip. @@1001cars Understood! Battery symbol to recharge appears after 115km. The good point is that all the rest of the trip you drove in hybrid using the non usable battery part and the regeneration, so you still had the 245CV available and final consumption was great. Other conclusion, regeneration is not enough to charge the battery when driving, because you ended with 0km electric range (no recharge from 115 to 900).

Answer for last your "question": you are not right. Regeneration is enough to charge the battery much more than 0 km, during the driving. See electric range for example at: 13:25 and later on... and 14:45. I could make it better but I did not want to.

@@1001cars so according to your numbers and the fuel tank of the RS phev, driving at highway speeds (which most people do) = a range of 550-600 km ( on fuel alone)....i'm guessing that's with an empty car, no air conditioning and a limited number of overtakes. Also, I figure that when you're going at motorway speeds, the overall hybrid system interferes less due to the speed, acceleration, weight, wind, etc. Your test is good, no arguments there, but if we're going to talk about real life conditions, I would love to see 2 passengers (or the equivalent in weight) + AC + a half loaded trunk and constant real life speeds of 100-130 or a bit more during overtakes. I'm bringing this up because from an overall perspective, the petrol only version seems to be better. It would also be more reliable on the long run given the bigger engine and lower number of electronic parts for which VAG is not known to be great on reliability.
