I got my SKS around 1987 or so, for $60.00. It’s always worked perfectly & I’ve still got it. I can hit a CD at 100 yds, that’s good enough for me! 👍🏼

My first encounter with the ChiCom SKS was 1971 in Vietnam 🇻🇳 if you think the SKS isn’t accurate you were never shot at with one, also the VC were excellent with reloading with stripper clips. So as Prepper says keep the rifle as is practice reloading from stripper clips and you have a more than adequate battle rifle. If it worked in combat 48 yes ago it will work now

I use a 20-round Tapco magazine (pinned at 5-shots due to Canadian gun laws), and it works perfectly. I filed the edges where necessary (not too much) and it fits in perfectly snug to my new stock. I have used it for over a year, and I NEVER had a single problem. No word of lie, I did not have a single negative incident with it. Every shot went smoothly.

I did the bolt mod on a replacement spare bolt and kept the matching one stock. That allows you to insert a duckbill mag on a closed bolt. I also installed an extended mag release lever. I kept all the stock parts in case I want to go back - but did have to slightly Dremel out the mag cavity. No big deal as this was a run of the mill Chinese SKS. I have no feeding issues with the Tapco 20-round duckbills. My ‘54 Russian will be kept all stock.

The SKS is an all around good gun. Not my first choice for some things but not my last choice for anything. Really useful little rifle. Practice with the stripper clips until they are second nature muscle memory and you will be able to reload at least as fast as an AK. This rifle is easy to learn, use and maintain. Nothing cheesy or weak about it. Not high tech at all. If you really want an optic , use a red dot, mount it at the front of the barrel co-witnessed with the front sight. Insane Accuracy has a video on how to do this in a very strong, inexpensive, effective manner. This is a truly Great Hog Gun. Self defense, hunting, plinking or as a general go to utility rifle, the SKS is fun to shoot.

Hmmm... House clearing. Long range precision, DMR. That doesn't mean you can't try to alter the SKS to do these things but you can buy the right rifle for the job. The SKS is too useful right the way it is. Accurate and reliable, no mags to deal with, easily load single rounds. The perfect Florida Hog Gun, the rifle I hang around with every day and shoot for fun. And, for the fact that the basic rifle fights well in an emergency. I own ARs AKs and other quality firearms. I enjoy the SKS as much as any of them.

Thank you, good advice. I have a few and they are fine as they are. A stock change, spring firing pin and a recoil buffer is about it for me. They work the ammo is cheep and just fine as a medium hunting rig or for a good blaze at the range. Would never be without one. Still great value for money, we still get boxes of them turning up here in NZ, they go for NZ $400. Every one needs at least one :) Cheers.

I agree 100%... I own the type 56, Russian, Yugoslavian and Norinco. I've played with the type 56 and the Norincos. Anytime I've modified these with the magazines it is never as good as the magazine it comes with. I've had 0 issues with these stock. SKSs aren't cheap anymore. Keep it as is in my opinion.

@ 2:00 was going to ask about leaving the detachable box mag in and loading with stripper clips... If you can at least load 10 rounds in from the top with a stipper clip, then it wouldn't hurt to carry it with a full 20 or 30, then reload 10 at a time. If your gun fight goes past 30 rounds, you're having a bad day anyway.

I bought a used Norelco Chicom sks from a pawn shop. It had the folding Tapco plastic stock, no magazine, and the wooden upper handguard. Afterward, I bought a 20 rd plastic magazine. I took it to the range and had various problems. I ended up getting a used original wooden stock and original 10 rd magazine on ebay. I striped the wood stock and refinished it in Dark Walnut stain, looks real nice. Once the refinished stock and magazine were reattached to the rifle, I took it back to the range. It fires the way it is supposed too, it looks and feels good. I personally like rifles in original stock condition. I will get off my soapbox now.

I have several SKSs, I use Tapco 20rd mags & had zero problems with feeding, ejection or mag changes. I've also reloaded the Tapcos from 10rd stripper clips, initially being unable to load 20rds. What I found was that as I pressed the ammo down the clip rocked forward slightly causing a jam. When I made sure the stripper clip stayed at the correct angle (not letting it flop forward when I press down) I could load 20rds easily.

The detachable 35 round archangel mags are excellent. Takes 3 1/2 stripper clips smooth as butter. Mag changes are also easy, does take a lil practice to get really fast but certainly even an armature can get off 70 rounds with one mag change quicker than an expert with 7 stripper clip reloads. To address the issue of the mags not going in on a closed bolt. There is a bolt mod you can do to preform mag changes on a closed bolt. Another great thing about the archangel mag is they have a release tab on the mag it’s self

The only rear housing optic mount that works is the 1960’s norinco rear housing optic mount that has the tightening screw on the back that wrenches down on the pin that holds the rear housing in place. You won’t lose zero unless you break it down to clean which then you have to re zero it. That being said it will hold zero when you shoot. Problem is, they are super rare and hard to find and barley can find any info on the 1960’s version. They were one solid piece, not like the newer ones. If you try to find one, only the ones with the back side tightening part is the one I’m talking about.

I went back to the stripper clip because they are faster even after I sanded the mag down to slide in and out effortlessly. Stripper clips are faster and easier to carry with less space taken up in your kit; the duck-bill mag doesn't fit easily into any mag pouch. Also, in a pinch, you can turn the weapon over, open the well, and drop loose rounds in, then close the well.

I got my paratrooper modified already. It has an ATI pinned folding stock, but nothing that can't be reversed. I've been looking at the Sabertooth set up and full length optics rail. I really don't give one bit of thought as to whether or not someone's feelings are hurt because I have an aftermarket stock. I have two 30rd AK duck bills that have never given me trouble, and one 20rd Tapco that hasn't either. I'll probably buy a wooden stock and clean it up and have both styles for whatever my mood may be.

Two things need to be said about the SKS rifle. 1) consider installing a spring loaded firing pin (if it doesn't have one) to prevent "slam fires" from a dirty sticky firing pin. 2) Not all so-called SKS stripper clips will work. Many that are purchased on line are out of spec. Test 'em before your are in a situation where you may have to depend on them.

respect your view but battle rifles have been modified for years...I did a basic mod on mine to readily except the duck bill. i can drop my mag, lock my bolt to the rear, insert a fresh mag and chamber a round in half the time as my brother with a stripper clip and the stock internal mag...my SKS strips the rounds like butter off of even the cheapest of mags...of my 40 sumthin rifles my SKS is #2 on my go to gun for overall "utility" rifle...

I did the bolt mod and grinded it(theres videos for that), super easy and it operates flawlessly. Mag goes in and out regardless the position bolt. I had to sandpaper down the inside of the wood stock where it was a little tight for the mags, but not much. Just a few rubs and it works like it was manufactured for those mags. Countless rounds, no feed failure or anything. Im so glad it did it.

Dremel in a slot into a promag 20 rounder and use good stripperclips; it's very doable. Also there's a mod to drop and change a detachable mag with the bolt forward. If I owned a rifle like this I'd keep it the way it was intended & master the skill without an easy option out. A rifle is a rifle and a tactical optional rifle is the same for that purpose. My Chinese Russian style 20 round mag feeds just as well as the original 10 round. My 30 round American made metal mags also feed just fine. One of them had a little wiggle to it which was corrected by a single rap of duct tape around the portion that rocks into the forestock. There ARE definitely a lot of dust cover scope mounts that don't work. There are ways to scope it that are stable, but do some research before buying a scope mount. I haven't scoped mine, so I'm not claiming any expertise in that department, but I have seen dust cover mounts that can't be zeroed because they have play in them. My new in box Norinco SKS is the best value in a gun I've purchased. I got it for 90 bucks in the early 90's.

Jul Dedieu totally agree with you, just recently got mine and was excited to get on RU-vid how many different variants there were for the sk but most of them are from guys pretty much saying there too old and too stupid to modify this rifle,I think revamping this ole dog to make it more modern and keep up with today's times is an awesome idea especially if you're on a tight budget as myself

Yep... the SKS rocks.., prefer it to the AK... just as reliable, better ballistics from the 20" barrel, lighter to carry and way way better balance in the hands. SKS stripper clips are like ricking horse poo here in NZ though..... The model "D" came from the factory converted for AK mags. My first one was one of those... awesome wee gun.., I put about 7000 roundss through that one and it NEVER malfunctioned... not once!. My latest one isn't a "D" but I have converted it to take AK magazines... bit of machining and welding, so take it to a 'smith if you don't have the skills. The after market Dragunov style stocks make them more shootable for bigger-than-asian shooters. The triggers are a bit draggy, but can be tuned. Again, don't attempt it if you don't have the know-how because they can easily go full auto on you. Mine is still two stage, but has light, crisp let-off now. Sights..... if your eyes are as old as mine (75 this year!) a fixed aperture on the back of the receiver cover works great, the front sight being adjustable both ways. Doubles the sight radius and the orthoptic effect helps my old essentially fixed focus eyes. with good ammo expect less than 2MoA. Cool little rifles right out of the box... the Chinese ones are, according to the Russians, as good as theirs, and in stock trim are fine. A little bit of sprucing up and they will leave any AK for dead. If you MUST have an optic, get a side rail on it then you can use the AK47/74/Saiga quick detachable mounts for a scope. Not really needed within the effective range of the little short Russian round IMHO....

...the scope mount was perfected by Magwedge here in Canada....rock solid mount to the reciever...

Wow! Lots of people getting heated up SKS opinions on here. First crazy people I had no clue this is such a sought for weapon. I’m actually glad to know this many people respect this weapon as they should. Really glad to know I kept 2 Russian all original, numbers ect, I didn’t realize that they are from what I read people want so bad. I paid $100 for each weapon at gun show here in Louisiana about 20 years ago. Excellent weapon. I also bought a 3rd Russian model at the same time and same price yet I chose this one to abuse and use and go through 10,000 plus rounds in harsh conditions. Finally after about 12 years maybe, I had to go ahead and put on a new stock ( got a Tapco which honestly quickest one I could find. Use the 20, 30 and 45 round mags with no issues, never had to modify or machine any part of my rifle. I literally beat the original stock to shit using stock to clear thick brush, thickest, used it so many times during storms in woods and swamps at night, crucial for high capacity mags hunting and fighting multiple packs of hogs, mud hell damn thing

Plains Prepper that is odd. So if someone wanted to cross the border to go go to a firing range they could not do it with an SKS or buy one then cross the border with it.

TAPCO magazines work great. I have them in both a Norinco and a Yugo that have been sporterized. It is true that mag changes are slow, but if you use the gun for a sporter they are great.

I have heard many thoughts on the SKS over the years, so here is mine...I bought my Norinco in 1990, for $75. Every part has same serial number. It is 26 years old. It has fired more rounds than I could have possibly kept track of. It has an Tapco Intrafuse folding, railed stock system. It has had the lower bolt rails removed. It has the Tapco extended mag release installed. It has a Promag side mount receiver Picatinny rail scope mount, with a UTG 3-9x 40mm Bugbuster scope. It has a 300LM light on lower rail. It is really pretty...but the important part... It will bust a coyote's ass at 300 yards all day long. It loves tapco 20 or 30 round mags, which after the 15 minute bolt mod was finished, can be inserted with bolt closed or open, it doesn't matter which. I am a Veteran, like the Marine that posted earlier, I can fully appreciate a fully functional firearm, like my SKS. When I go out to shoot, I want to shoot, not sit and feed stupid stripper clips all day. So like everyone says...what doesn't work for some, probably will work for the rest of us, that have years of experience with our favorite firearms :). I have never had a problem at all with my removable mags. I did however have several hang fire issues when it was new, and had the Brady fixed mag in it. Just a note, funny you should mention the AK's. I have 2 of them, and they have no mods at all. With Stock, mods , scope and all, I have about $300 in my Coyote killer sks. Just one of my AK's cost double that.....lmao

I love your videos. I watched a video about the 20 - 30 rnd mag. The guy took the mag apart and filed the inside because the bullets would get James up on the welds and over sprayed paints on the inside. It was done pretty easily. In time I believe it took him around 20 mins or so. It worked flawlessly. I’m not a big believer in needing 30 rounds but for some people it’s a necessary lol. Again love you vids

hey, thanks for the insightful info as i'm planning on getting an SKS soon. don't know about the American market for them, but here in Canada a Russian surplus SKS is sold for around $200-250 CAD before tax(thats $150-190 USD) which makes them the cheapest centerfire rifle in the market here and surplus ammo are also readily available at reasonable prices too

I hate Tapco stocks as much as anyone but if I wanna add a scope to this viciously accurate rifle I am going to do it. Tapco mags generally work fine for me and I also modified my bolt to reload closed and stamped me and my bf's initials on it for good measure. It's my gun and I do what I want with it.

I have owned several of the sheet metal mags made for the simonov carbines. Most have worked, a couple never worked. My favorite one is a 60 rounder! Very easy to reload with the 10 round stripper clips. If you have stripper clips, take good care of them, I don't think we'll be seeing more anytime soon.☹️

Good video and good advice. I agree with sticking with the original magazine. It works and it works well. Accurizing it is not that hard and expect 3 inch groups at best. It yours is shooting over 4 inch groups you can probably do better by bedding it properly.

They make AK version as hunter rifles. I have a Saiga "M" in 7.62x39 and a Vepr in 7.62x54 in a hunter configuration. They both take standard AK style mags. Now they are kind of hard to come by and getting very expensive.

I can reload mine with the bolt closed. Just machine the rails on the bolt down and you can remove/install mags with the bolt open or closed. I can reload mine with the archangel mags in like 4 seconds or less.

Dumb Video. Not worth watching. After market mags work just fine once you learn how to properly clearance the inside of the receiver and mod your bolt. Striper clips are no good once you mount a scope. I even made a factory 10 round mag into a removable. Take 1/8th off the front horns on the trigger assembly, trim the front of the factory mag, and put a small screw in each side to hold it shut while loaded with rounds when removed from the sks.

To everyone with SKS, to each his own. If it works after any mod, good for you. If not fall back to plan O, as in original config. Enjoy your SKS, life is good but short.
