Did you remove the teeth when using the coffee and walnuts? I really like how those ones turned out
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 4 года назад
@@nickbrito7134 So if I can I will take the teeth out just because I think the contrast of the white teeth looks good. But if you leave them it they may or may not get stained as it kinda depends on the particular animal. It might have to do with how much plaque the animal has, more plaque equals more stain on the teeth.

Hi Hunter. I'm about to get my hands on my first deer skull. Up till now I was carving small stuff like pendants and key chains. I was wondering can I use drawing ink to stain my carvings. What do you think about it? And I would like to use two colours near to each other. What should I do to prevent from merging together. Thanks. Love your channel.

What about the teeth. do they not take stain or do you remove the white teeth, stain the skull then glue teeth back in?

I just found your channel and its already been super useful! I'm worried about getting the horns off of some Bison skulls before I give them a peroxide bath, do you have any videos where you talk about that? I also have quite a few skulls with bullet holes in them do you have any tricks for covering those up?
@usskullhunter

Hey Justin! Thanks for watching! Are the bison skulls fresh or cleaned and the sheaths just attached?
@justinlarson3044
@justinlarson3044 4 года назад
@@usskullhunter It's actually a mix I have quite a few that have been sitting on ant hills for a couple years and I'm going to have a steady supply of fresh skulls in the future, I'm working on a bison ranch that hasn't been doing anything with the skulls and I'm hoping to change that.
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 4 года назад
@@justinlarson3044 ok. So as you know there is a thin membrane between the horn sheath and the horn core. So if its old and dried up you need to soak in warm water so that everything softens up and you can slip them off. If they are fresh skulls you have to sweat them off by putting the horns in black trash bags. Basically you are just breaking down that membrane so the sheaths can come off.

Hi there! I know this came out a year ago but I'm hoping I could still get some tips! I have a clean coyote skull currently soaking in water to remove teeth (and left over borax from a failed attempt at crystalizing lol), and I was watching these videos and wondering about using wood stain. I really like that super dark shade you got from the walnut, but I don't have any around and am fairly impatient. Would a wood stain work in a similar way to the leather stain? Thank you so much!
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 3 года назад
Hey Cory! Thanks for watching! So a wood stain put on the skull will turn out pretty blotchy. I would highly recommend getting some leather dye (most craft stores have it) as the browns soak into the bone and give a fairly similar result to the walnut.

Thanks for putting this out. I’ve been wanting to try staining a wild boar skull dark like that walnut stain with out getting the teeth. I’m having a hard time getting all the oils out of it. I boiled it and whitened in peroxide about 5 months ago and it’s still leaching oil. Any tips or a stain that won’t be affected by the oil as bad. I’m wanting it pretty dark.
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 4 года назад
Hey Aaron! Yeah hogs are notorious for grease as you know. The only real best way is to finish degrease the skull. Have you given acetone or ammonia a try for degreasing?
@aaronwhite979
@aaronwhite979 4 года назад
U.S. Skull Hunter I haven’t tried acetone yet. I will when I can find it local in gallon jugs. I’ve watched whitebone’s video on it. It seems to work but not 100% still. Pigs are just greasy it seems. That’s why I was looking into stains, I don’t like the look of a yellowed skull.

I noticed on some of the stains you say to take the teeth out, do you take the teeth out when using the walnuts and coffee?
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 4 года назад
Hey Nick! Sorry for the delay. So it really just depends on what you want the final result to be. I take out the teeth out if I want the contrast to be more noticeable between the teeth and the skull.

Hey! So I will put the skull in after the solution has come to a boil (and after the burner is off) while it is still hot but not bailing and then just leave it in there overnight.

Yup! You will just have to decide to use it as a surface stain (like scrimshaw) or a penetrating stain.

so can i get a more step by step on how to do the skull at 10:30??? I am just starting craving and I have my first boar that I killed and I want to carve a design and then achieve the look of the skull at 10:30 ty
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 4 года назад
Ok Zippy. So once the carving is done add a generous matte clear coat to the skull. This clear coat will help prevent the stain from soaking into the bone. Then add the Minwax Gunstock 231. Let this dry and they ad several light layers of glossy clear coat (spray on). This will help the next step from mixing with the Minwax stain. After the clear coat is dry add Verathane Ebony wood stain to the carved areas and immediately wipe off the excess. At that point you can always add a glossy or matte finish just to lock everything in.
@stealthnight452
@stealthnight452 4 года назад
@@usskullhunter did u get the stains mixed up? Or is the numbers at 10:30 meant to be with 5 being the base coat and then it builds up? Cause the video makes it seem like 1. Is the base coat but then your instructions are the other way around? Also when I apply whichever stain is the last one, how did it not stain the word TOY for example ?
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 4 года назад
@@stealthnight452 So yes you are right. It can work either way though just as long as the first stain whether it be the black or the brown is locked in place with a clear coat over top. Because the word TOY is raised the black stain gets wiped off. The brown stain is not wiped off however giving a more uniform color for that one.
@stealthnight452
@stealthnight452 4 года назад
@@usskullhunter ok. I think I might do the brown stain first just because it will go everywhere n soak in.
