When I ran a record label in 1977, Sky Saxon somehow got my home phone number (possibly from Greg Shaw) and used to call me for a chat, usually stoned out of his mind, but a lovely gentle man. He would talk for hours, which wouldn't have been so bad because he was calling from the US, where it was early evening. The only problem being, that the time in the UK was 2 am. A true legend. Sky Saxon. We owe you so much.
We recognise that Sky! He would talk for hours and hours and hours; you couldn't interrupt because he was so entertaining and continuous and on and on and stoned and convoluted and dedicated and magical and story-telling and philosophising and deep and stoned and immaculate and meaningful and on and on and on and on... Loved him!
The Seeds were on a short-lived American TV show called "The Mothers in Law." My Ma, Dad and my grandma watched that show with me. They dug The Seeds. Sky took a psychedelic stroll, and he never came back. Sky Saxon (RIP)
This was really wonderful to see and I'm so glad that young people are into The Seeds. We used to go see them on the Sunset Strip every weekend along with the Doors and Love the Birds and so many other great groups of the time!! Great to see Sky!!!
I was at that gig, and they tore the roof off. You can't really tell from the clips here, but the pick-up Seeds were passionate and dynamic, while Sky was cool AF. He never fluffed a number, he nailed it. It was righteous. I remember thinking at the time, this isn't nostagia, or "like" being back then, this is very much the real thing, happening right now. It was a hell of a set. He may give you the impression of a dandelion on the breeze, but he never missed a beat. He knew people were gently mocking, but fuck 'em, he didn't rise to their stupidity. RIP Sunlight.
I played guitar for sky on the west coast. He called the band weather. If anyone has some video clips please let me know. Sky lookd great in this clip. I wrote babes in paradise
I was surprised to learn that even the Electric Prunes got to tour Europe regularly in the 1960s and they were popular. If the Seeds had gotten the same chance to see London in the mid-60s, there's no doubt in my mind they would have made friends with the Kinks, the Move, Small Faces, and Pink Floyd
I really like this band. And I have been a Doors fan since 1982 when I was 15. Do the math. Robin Williams once said if you remember to he 1960s you weren’t really there. I don’t remember the 1960s but I love their music. Oh and don’t do drugs. But I love their music.
Saved all my comments on Twitter where they'll be seen, cept for my Aunt Sally (in her 20's) gave me their debut album for my birthday when I was a 'teener'. Pretty good Aunt.
Obviously Sky still had his head together. Always did wonder what happened to him because I loved his first two lp's. As he says, if you have the right sound that's all that matters. Big Brother was Another group that fit that description.
Back in LA in 67 we’d listen to The Seeds, Love & The Doors...Going to see Once Upon A Time in Hollywood tonight..It should have some Seeds songs in it..
Wrong. Vito Paulekas and his apprentice Carl Franzoni were (supposed) the ones who started the flower power movement. Supposedly, because (of course) it was all made up (and manipulated) by the military complex. As it happens with all things "rock-'n'-roll".
This has to be the inspiration for Mel Brooks hippy auditionee for 'Springtime for 'itler'...What a trip, and a blooming racket!. BTW, Sterling has my Hofner Senator Bass! Good luck with the intonation buddy.
I so love this. He was the real deal. All 60s music owers everything to him. He even makes John Lennon look a little paler, and less human because he fought the machine so hard he married it.
Beautiful Soul EXTREMELY talented but was very off and ON! He lived at my place a bit when I was on Melrose and Vine. (Couldn't stand the splif smoking). Please just smoke grass! I had a giant record collection then , a WALL of RECORDS... For some reason I pulled out a Father Yod album kinda as a joke because I DIDN'T know. He said "Yeah, I know that dude". I'm sure some out there know THAT story. I will stop now. Miss you man. "New Sierras"
The Baba Rara Cucu Dada ........nah nanah nah na naahna na na nah........it's the sound.......of the summer.......yeah, Sky Saxon and some Barracudas. What's not to like. Sky Reminds me of David Johansen.
