Usually Monday uploads but today is Tuesday. Tetanus shot. What can ya do? Still humbled at how many people care about skyboxes. See you next Monday or on Patreon. www.patreon.com/any_austin
"Tetanus Shot", sure. We all know you waited to upload it now because I literally just watched your OoT Skybox video. I'm onto you, Any... if that's even your real name.
Week 5 of suggesting this: You should really include "Drakkhen" on SNES in your skyboxes series. The game is an open-world 3D RPG with a day and night cycle, and amazing vibey music. Please at least check out the game!
Yo didn't expect seeing you here, I swear I see your comments all over the place on everything Majora's Mask related. Fairly sure I saw one of your comments on the Marble Pawns "Zeldawave II"
I think that the rain on the second day is more about producing a feeling of disappointment and melancholy rather than urgency. After everything is bright and sunny on the first day, this is like a solemn moment when everyone is beginning to lose hope and realize that the moon is actually falling. This is probably about the point when many of the NPC's dialogue goes from "There's no way that the moon is falling!" to "Oh, shit, it really is falling... This is going to negatively impact the festival, isn't it?" It is about disillusionment and the sickening realization that things might not actually turn out okay in the end.
I took it as just a sign that things are still going along as usual. If you just stop the moon, everything else in the world will continue as if nothing happened. Just that bit of continuity. That and reinforcing the groundhog day loop because it ALWAYS rains on day 2.
Agreed. The 3DS version didn't have that, which is another small but interesting detail. In the N64 it's scary because you know you're not gonna get to see the sun fully rise, while in the 3DS Version it's as if the Sun has also abandoned the world of Termina
I've stayed awake for many summer sunrises and they have a very weird feeling, like a change in pressure in the air that comes in front of the actual sunlit portion. And the though of that being the last one before cataclysm, that's spooky.
12:47 That guy's actually the part-timer that works at night. The owner is the one who's there during the day; he changes into a different outfit and is the one who runs the Curiosity Shop at night. The part-timer actually is working part-time because he's in a band that apparently isn't making much money. You can see him in a tree in Termina Field trying to get some red rupees during the day. He says he stole the rupees from a crow... The same crow that circles Clock Town and is "fond of musical instruments" (according to a gossip stone) and will drop rupees for you if you play songs for it, implying he played music for the crow so it would drop rupees. Yeah, this game is amazing. Maybe the skybox that's left out is the one at the beginning of the game in the forest since you already covered it kind of?
If you're thinking of takkuri the crow by milk road, it steals your ocarina and money haha. you can hit it to get money and killing it drops 200 rupees iirc
@@Drew_150 No, I'm referring to an unnamed guay that circles Clock Town and drops rupees if you play ocarina songs for it. It could be referring to Takkuri and that adds another element if it is because then he's stealing from his boss's side hustle lol. But he's much closer to Clock Town and pretty far from the entrance to Milk Road where Takkuri is at.
You ever just turn on Majora's Mask and just walk around and absorb the atmosphere? Like no doing quests or anything, just taking in the world the developers crafted.
I do that with 3D Zelda games in general. They're very immersive, atmospheric games that are awesome to just vibe in. Though what's great is how the three day cycle really adds to that in Majora's Mask case.
Yea, but I'll play for like 8 hours to do all the quests and get all the masks from a blank file. Then go walk around and talk to people with obscure masks
my 6yo ass was too scared to ever actually do any quests or even fully complete woodfall, but i still sunk hours into just exploring and experiencing the atmosphere and even though i wouldn't actually progress and beat the game for another TEN YEARS, remembering the atmosphere (and all the unexplored content i read about online) solidified it as my favorite zelda game
My brother and I were at the hospital stuck in a small room over the last 8 days while he had tests run and I introduced him to your videos. They really cheered him up--he loves your sense of humor. However, I turned one of your videos up loud when he needed to take a crap in the bathroom to drown out some noise, and then it became a tradition. Anytime either of us had to poop, we'd pick out another egg busters and turn it up loud. He insisted I make you aware of this. edit: Oh and also I really liked this video too. I probably should have mentioned that.
I appreciate that when you mimed a villager smacking something with their hammer, you used not just any old hammer PNG, but a Martinez hammer. They are light weight, ergonomic, have plenty of features, and are weighted to strike hard despite their comparative lightness. Good choice.
I’ve always felt like the skyboxes in Majora’s Mask did a lot more for the atmosphere than they did in Ocarina of Time. One of the things I remember most vividly was how beautiful the night sky looked, with its rich purples and blues and reds on the final night especially. It was oddly serene; even though you’re going to die in a couple hours, the sky offers some level of comfort in your final hours.
I think the unmentioned skybox is from the Giants' "rooms". The weird pastel subspace with the bubbles. Granted, it's not playable in there, but you can still see around.
Oh yeah love those rooms, wish we could revisit them in the same file. But ig it shows that a higher power actually does recognize the progression you're making
Majora's Mask is one of those games that makes you view life differently after playing. They did time travel and created a sense of urgency in an alive world perfectly.
Inverted Stone Tower Temple has a cool thing going on, especially at night. The sky is below you, and at night it actually looks like the temple is in space.
Majora's Mask is by far my favorite work of art and I am happy that someone else takes the time to appreciate it and its details, such as the skyboxes. Learning about these skyboxes was super interesting, even if I already knew a few stuff about them. You should absolutely do more videos on the appreciation of video game atmosphere (is that almost a pun?) and other ways of interpreting video games as an art form.
One of my favorite IRL skyboxes is inside the Venetian hotel and casino in Las Vegas. They recreated the canals of Venice indoors, complete with functional gondolas, building facades, and a skybox on the ceiling.
I love the rare skyboxes either in places it feels like you're not supposed to be like the fourth day just before the moon crashes or in places you're only gonna be in briefly like the inside of the moon. I've always loved how serene that scene is right at the climax of the game, like you've just woken up from or gone into a dream state, gives me an eye of the storm type feeling.
It didn't occur to me until watching your video that the shop is heavily themed around fishing, and the daytime clerk is the same NPC as the fishing hole clerk in OoT. I'm still figuring stuff out about this game like two decades later. I'm wondering if there's anything else that I missed that was completely in plain sight like that. Your videos are great and I can always tell you're aiming to offer something different than most other channels, and for me your style of dry delivery is always preferable to the standardized overenthusiasm of other internet people.
The part where the sky is pink and blue always felt absurdly enchanting to me as a kid, and especially now as an adult when I do occasionally see skies similar to it in the morning while I'm at work
When you're just outside of a large thunderstorm the sky can turn green, so I can definitely feel the sense of foreboding from it. Especially coming from somewhere where a relatively calm looking green sky means tornado weather.
It's large hail cores specifically that are responsible for this, for the curious. Don't stay outside if you see it because there are going to be tennis-ball-sized ice chunks falling down at terminal velocity soon.
The 3D effect in the walls of the Astral Observatory remind me a lot of the room in Ocarina of Time where you learn the Serenade of Water (at the end of the Ice Cavern). Those magical walls combined with Sheik's monologue and the beautiful music make it such a special place to be, if only for a short time.
I just replayed this game for the first time in forever and having seen your ocarina skybox video I was paying more attention to them while I was playing. I love how you emphasized the feelings the sky brings out in context to the events of the game. Great video!
Woah this is odd I was just watching your Adult Swim iceberg vids. It's especially odd seeing underappreciated RU-vidrs commenting on videos for other underappreciated RU-vidrs. Small world.
Cmon, Austin, that hipster dude doesn't run the shop. He just works there part time and doesn't give a shit, the guy with the itchy back runs the shop. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me use this knowledge once in my life.
When I was younger I nearly drowned in the ocean during a morning swim. I got caught in a hole in some rocks and the waves kept pushing me under. I remember seeing the sunrise through the water thinking, somewhat dispassionately, how it would be my last. Your observation brought this memory back hard!
I love your methodology for analyzing games and just assets of art in general. My wife worked as a museum guide and these videos very much give me the vibe of an educator imploring their audience "what can we find here" what is the thought behind the skyboxes, how do they make us feel. Hell yeah, keep up the good work my guy!
When you reset the clock and go back to dawn of the first day and walk out of the clocktower into the town at 6am it always captured that feeling of getting up early on a saturday morning, free and with things to do (like play video games) and knowing you have a few days to do what you want before the world ends (or go back to school). Atleast it did for me, such a vibe.
Though it isn't the skybox, one part of this game I always liked was how you could pretty much see the Stone Tower Temple from so many other locations that isn't Ikana Valley
i see what your saying The Rain stands as an indifferent force to the goings on in the world. and by introducing this rain it gives you a little bit of normalcy and a kind of hope that despite the moon crashing into the earth that nature stands in an indifferent defiance of it, the world keeps turning even tho you or someone you know have died reminding you or them that life goes on and so must you
Can't get enough of your relentlessly contemplative, hyper-self-aware style. You make me feel better about my own neurosis haha. And if I may say so, its rather inspiring and energizing that you're such a productive artist with your music and videos in addition to apparently holding down a day job. Such a _personal_ channel, and hey, the unique look at some of our favorite games is refreshing as well. Sorry to gush, but I like it here
I love how seriously and honestly you take these videos. Taking the time to analyze-and admire!-these small yet essential elements, scenes, moments really explains how and why a video game experience can be so satisfying, and divine. And it pays tribute to the developers, who undoubtedly put so much work into nailing down every aspect of these games, all in the interest of storytelling 😇
The skybox during the final boss battle where skullkid is a child under a tree with all the other bosses as children and you just...talk to him. Bright blue and partially cloudy sky
I personally am always amazed by the skybox of Zelda Wind Waker. They're kinda important for the phantom ship quest and the side quest of the guy sitting on the stairs on Windfall Island. I don't know the English of that character. He's called Camille in the french version. But it's really a beautiful sky, the sunsets and sunrises are fantastic and I really like the thunderstorms. Also, the placement of the stars are accurate.
I think what you were trying to get at with the rain on day 2 is that it's a normal everyday annoyance overlaid on top of a terrifying existential threat (the moon) which creates this strange comfort. Like you get the sense of 'oh it's raining that sucks' but then you realize the world is going to end anyways, and so it almost flips that initial reaction to something more like 'at least it's still raining while it can, and at least that's normal'. It definitely feels more realistic and less like 'ooh it's dark and depressing, so it's cloudy and rainy now too', the world feels real enough that the rain is something you can think about as something with depth on its own and not just purely background stuff.
Just graduated highschool, been watching since elementary school. It’s dope to see how you’ve somehow managed to never drop off on the quality of your vids throughout that entire time and now more people finding your vids through this new content is insane! Proud of you 🥸
I really enjoy your videos. It showcases lots of inner feelings and thoughts I've had while playing games throughout my life. Drawing attention to those little details or areas that are seemingly insignificant. And who doesn't enjoy a good skybox?
In film, green lighting is often used to show that something is off. So that may be why they made the sky green on the last day. It's a nice way to convey that things are not as they should be
A suggestion for future skybox videos should be for games on the sega saturn! A large amount of the games use skyboxes for "3d" effects because the saturn wasn't capable of it. while they aren't "skyboxes" per se, they function the same and are highly detailed!
It’s got to be the sky box from the beginning when skull kid takes your horse and ocarina. There’s that blue haze and trees in it. It’s definitely one of the most unique.
Its so weird, youre so right about the rain of day 2, it doesnt feel like it adds to any urgency, it makes it feel more normal somehow... i think the way i'd articulate it is that its almost like a distraction from the moon (despite it still being there), like yeah the sky is as normal as ever, its raining! how could something as bonkers as the moon falling be happening. also worth mentioning in my opinion is how weird it is that it rains in clock town when the moon should be acting like a giant umbrella over it, considering its directly above. it could be instead that the rain clouds are between the moon and the earth, but as only a skybox they very much visually are behind the moon... perhaps a missed opportunity for it to Not rain in clock town and to rain elsewhere, and maybe even some dialogue about it.
The green Majoras mask box evokes green skies that can come when tornadoes are nearby churning up leaves.. although I don’t know if they considered that
To answer the pop quiz: The skybox "on the ground" in the upside down version of Stone Tower Temple. Which is my favourite skybox in any game. Awesome video.
I watch a lot of Zelda videos so that's how it seems this for recommended to me but you presented it so well that I'm interested in learning about other random skyboxes. Also your song slaps frfr
The green sky on the 3rd day reminds me of the way it looks during tornado weather. Like the unstable air which can develop into a tornado, it makes me think that the world itself is unstable and on the verge of cataclysm.
In the Midwest during the moments right before a tornado touches down under a super cell, the sky all around turns an incredibly ominous and eerie green.
i noticed your prince shirt halfway throught the video then when i heard your little snippet of a song at the end, i could definitely hear the prince inspiration! nicely done! I also really enjoy these skybox and unremarkable location vids... it makes me think about stuff that i never wold have considered before... so much goes into video games that no one thinks about. you've earned my sub, my dude!
Your dry style of comedy is refreshing and very funny. While these videos are likely drawing a very niche crowd, I’ve no doubt that your channel is going to skyrocket as long as you continue making videos. I will say to you what a girl who once broke my heart said to me: you have a great personality. I hope to see much more of it.
I was really hoping you’d talk about the skybox inside the Stone Tower temple after you flip it. Having the sky beneath you when you’re finishing this oppressive temple is so beautiful and surreal. In my last playthrough I was in that temple at the very end of the third day, as the clock counts down, and having that incredible reddish sky all underfoot (especially in the opening room of the temple) was extremely beautiful. Best skybox moment in the game for me. Fantastic video!! I want that Battlefront II skybox video.
I loved and miss Eggbusters a lot, but I'm really happy with Skybox Appreciation and Unremarkable Locations. It's very interesting to hear opinions about these things that are in so, so many games that just about everyone overlooks and takes for granted. The way that you present things has always entertained me. Thank you for continuing to make amazing content!
Dude your point about the fake skies indoors is something that triggered a response in my brain. I’ve always thought indoor fake skies were very aesthetically pleasing. Like rain forest cafe or the Paris hotel in Las Vegas.
We need more themed restaurants like rainforest cafe. Themed any sort of way. Gimme a space themed restaurant that's got a real-life skybox of stars behind glass so it looks like you're dining in some futuristic spaceship
Just had the amusing experience of walking up to my bus stop listening to your stuff on Spotify (Good, good job, looking forward to seeing the impact of listening to If You Tell the Truth on a loop for five hours is going to have on my 2022 rewind or whatever) and was like alright let’s see if finishing up whatever video it was I started yesterday on the bus is a feasible option, and here’s a new video! Great news for me and watching on the bus was indeed feasible and fun. Then the more demented realization: that it has apparently only been in that short gap between weekly new videos that I’ve seen, conservatively, one million of your other videos. What I’m saying is you’re welcome for the demented analytics
I really love this series. I hadn't considered sky boxes in as much depth as you describe, and your reflections are always a refreshing perspective. Now I'm going back to these games and really considering what I see!
So glad I found this channel. Love your dry sense of humor, good looking, and you seem to be very intelligent. And now musical talent on top of it😍 I haven’t paid near enough attention to skyboxes in the past, you feel the mood that they help to portray but you don’t ever really stop to think how much the skybox aids in that. I’m sure it’s something I’ll be doing from now on!
Really enjoying this series. I’m a game developer myself, and the importance of skyboxes (or I guess skyspheres now) and how they interact with the overall environment was never really something I thought heavily about.
I never really noticed this until you said it, but yeah, the nightsky in the Final Day does look more like a sunset. I feel like this also explains why it feels sort of unsettling and depressing. Great video
The overcast rainy skybox of day 2 contrasts the blue blue sky of day 1 to show that the world actually changes along with the characters and the marching of time towards inevitable doom. It also grounds termina more because it has, in a sense, dynamic changing weather. It’s very cool.
I gotta say I love your format and presentation. It's so refreshing to see someone else that appreciates games for the artwork they are and finds the beauty in the details.
Reincorporating the general skybox into Snowhead and Ikana after you beat the temple is kind of neat because it feels like you're bringing the environment back into the main world from that isolation you mentioned.
Longer videos? More skybox content? Yes please. Also, very much here for a Battlefront skybox video. I used to love getting lost in those places as a kid playing galactic conquest.
I like you. You bring up a lot of the mundane things that almost always go unnoticed in games, and I appreciate that someone takes time out of their life to point them out and give them some love too.
I personally like anything that you do. Doesnt matter how long or short the videos are. Not to sound weird or creepy but I find your voice to be very relaxing to listen to. Plus you're wicked cute, so please keep making videos of any kind :)
I also never felt the second day as urgent. The rain is calming. The lady sitting with the umbrella waiting for Kafei makes me feel like they will meet someday, no urgency. It's all fine, just a bit sad
