Skydiver has a premature deployment whilst preparing to jump from helicopter.
The jumpers closing pin got dislodged shortly before climbing out; the deployment bag left first, shortly followed by the pilot chute. All the jumpers carried hook knives but the decision was made not to use them due to the possibility of releasing pieces of line or canopy into the tail of the helicopter.

This is scarier than 99% of the low opening videos I've ever seen. Well done for everyone on keeping their heads in a scary, totally unpredictable and certainly unexpected situation. Breathing again now.

As a heli pilot and jumper all I can say is great job reeling it back in! A heli went down locally because the gas cap was not tightened and flew into the tail rotor. That canopy was about 2 seconds from causing a serious, probably fatal accident.
@tomm198
@tomm198 11 лет назад
Cutting away the stuck canvas could have had significant negative results for the tail rotor. As a helo pilot I really appreciate that they didn't cut the tangled portion away. Coutld have been disastrous. Great idea to get the dude off the skid! That was key in my opinion. Who knew if that chute was going to inflate and tear him through the skids and spit him out into the tail? Nice work everyone keeping their heads, dramatic of course and scary, but I think you did a great job. FWIW

After reading some of these comments I thought I should let everyone know that we landed safely in the helicopter and the guy who chopped his main landed fine. In my opinion 'Dobby' who's pin came out did the right thing by cutting and jumping, the helicopter was very cramped and there wouldn't have been room for him to get back in and for us to deal with the situation. Reserves are there for a reason.

Great job everyone on that load for reacting smart and quickly in that situation! I jumped my 1st four Heli jumps yesterday and had everyone check their gear before we all got on and before we left because I didn't want THAT while I was @ five grand! good job everyone!

I think the jujmper (given his low number of jumps) and the rest of the team in the heli did a great job, given the circumstances.

Personally I'd have slowed down to help them reel it in, around 50kts or so. You wouldn't want to hover because if it went into the tail rotor you'd totally lose control. At least if you're flying forwards you have some weathervaning. I'd also get some right pedal in so if it detached it would move away from the tail rotor.

Are you a Skydiver? Its at 5k, a problem the pilot is not 100% sure of, he's had no request to land from the Skydivers. You can tell by the rotor noise he has started a slow descent. The pilot and the Skydivers did a great job.

Two Part Comment: a. The jumper that had the camera mounted to his head needs a BIG "at a boy dude" for saving the day/lives of all by his quick thinking and cool actions........ b. Possibly just one more example of how Go Pro is drastically improving what we capture and see on screen.
@thetkingsley

To enter autorotation for zero airspeed the pilot has to push the nose of the helicopter down to gain airspeed... a very dicey proposition when you don't have back doors on and people back there without seatbelts on. You're right on when you say we're more comfortable with forward airspeed no matter the altitude.
@spacedonkey2008
@spacedonkey2008 11 лет назад
There is a specific release system Bela, 2 handles on the front of the harness, one releases the main from the container, the second pulls the pin on the reserve, there are other versions of the same theme with pros and cons but the thought process is down the same route, I had to get rid of my main yesterday because one of my steering toggles got locked off, reserve worked a treat and I was back up again after a reserve repack :)

Helo pilots don't like to hang out at zero forward airspeed because it falls within what we call the 'deadman curve' which as you might imagine can be a dangerous place to be. At zero forward airspeed if there was an equipment failure (such as bits of parachute caught in the tail rotor) the recovery is much more difficult.

Great job camera man!! If not for his quick reaction and thinking, that would have been a disaster. It looks as if the container opened first. At 0:08 you can see his deployment bag(D-bag) is out before the pilot chute at 0:09.
@Aetrion
@Aetrion 11 лет назад
No, they carry a backup chute, he had to cut the primary because it was tangled up.
@JaedoVicious
@JaedoVicious 11 лет назад
I dont know much about parachuting but my knowledge on general physics ect would suggest that if that parachute had of opened while attached to the helicopter it could have been bad news for everyone, and the guy that jumped would have just used his spare - I would say detaching that parachute and jumping was the best course of action
@Costas2305F

1. Helmet shield open!! ''WRONG'' 2. Chest strap loose!! ''WRONG'' and maybe the pilot chute not inserted properly that's why...... You're very lucky guy

Ya fair enough, I didn't consider people being tossed around back there without seatbelts on etc. I agree with KrisRamJ about slowing down but still keeping a bit of speed and some pedal. Question answered. Cheers!

just so everyone is clear in this instance "D-bag" means deployment bag not douche bag. The dude was told to jump I highly doubt any of this was intentional.
@ethanr432

no actually.. at that altitude the possibility for a cord or chute getting tangled into the tail rotor was high.

@crackout69
@crackout69 11 лет назад
They do, all qualified jumpers have at least one knife. But if what they were doing was working better not to risk cutting away at parts and risk them flying into any of the rotor blades or the tail of the helicopter.
@adamuk73
@adamuk73 11 лет назад
They do but cutting away a canopy to wrap itself around the tail rotor would have brought the helicopter down for sure. They did the right thing IMHO.
@jimgraham7633
@jimgraham7633 11 лет назад
Good on the guy that pulled it all back in. That said, It worked out okay, this time, but it would have really sucked to have your hands sheared off by the lines, grabbing them, without gloves and a hook knife to the bridle would have allowed the canopy to be pulled in a lot faster. had the canopy inflated, this would have ended very badly for the helicopter and pilot.

Probably a really good thing they didn't just hook knife it off... if the D-bag/canopy/anything else had gotten caught up in the rear propeller of the helicopter it would have meant death for most of them... But again a good reminder to do gear checks (PLURAL) before EVERY jump...

the helicopter can slow down but not stop that high up. the air is too thin to be able to hover. it looks pretty high up: higher than its OGE hover performance (Out of Ground Effect). if it were to stop, it would drop out of translational lift and start descending.

I am aware of the curve but they look like they were pretty high up and I imagine well out of the curve and with enough hight to auto from 0kts. Pilots probably are much more comfortable with fwd airspeed though no matter what altitude.

Even with a knife the chute could be sucked up into the propellers causing a crash (i don't skydive and i'm only 18, i'm just assuming that the propellers would suck the chute up)

Pin check anyone! Cutaway knive anyone! Pair of clean underwear anyone? Great story of a well known 4way professional skydiver asking someone about to leave the plane doing a hop and pop if they wanted a pin check. "Sure I'll get one on the ground." And out he jumps... After the jump the Pro approaches the newbie and explains that its common practice to have pin check before leaving the plane. "Oh !!! I thought you said 'Want a picture?'
