A night in heaven or a nightmare from hell? ⛺️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 This night I’ll remember for a looooong time. I finally gathered enough “strength” 🤓 to edit the footages from this section of the Skye Trail, from Quiraing to the Old Man Storr…nearly a year later. 🎒🥾 Thank you all for staying and being patient with me, I haven’t been active on RU-vid lately, dealing with some personal matters.
Shout out to Mark from Box Of Music ( boxofmusic.co.uk ) for the background music used in this video. He very kindly made some music exclusively for me and pretty dope sound, too! 👌🏼 Thanks ever so much, Mark!
For a while, I have been avoiding revisiting this particular night when I wild camped on the notorious Trotternish Ridge in my Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 tent, just above the Old Man of Storr. What a disaster! Even now, it honestly still gives me palpitations when I think of it. 😬
I don’t think wild camping in bad weather is for me. This experience will keep me grounded for a while, I’m sure. Hope you take care out there, earthlings!
Love, Mari xx

Depends on the tent. Big Agnes tents are not for UK weather. I'm glad you're safe though.
@ivat957

I don't enjoy camping in bad weather, but it's usually unavoidable on multi-day hikes in the UK. I usually wait things out in the tent--I've done some great reading that way. I can't see any point in walking over mountains in low visibility. I don't plan days in advance, but take things as they come, just in case of bad weather.
@Art-cq1zy
@Art-cq1zy 2 года назад
@@geraintjones75 what tent do you recommend?
@BurntCookies97
@BurntCookies97 Год назад
I do, given the right equipment. I'm from the Scottish Highlands though you either prepare for it or don't wild camp at all up here, the weather can be that brutal. Myself and friend were in South Skye around the Cuillins in March/April 2022 and it was pretty similar, the forecast was meaningless.
@BurntCookies97
@BurntCookies97 Год назад
@@Art-cq1zy not them but honestly OEX are great value tents, I have a Phoxx which I used for quite some time, survived storms I could barely stand up in. I used a Wild Country Zephyros in Skye previously and it got a bit thrashed but came out okay (I did fall through the door one night hurrying in due to freezing/raining/absurd wind conditions and bust the zip but that was me not the tent.) I upgraded to a Terra Nova Pioneer 2 this summer, got caught in a brutal thunderstorm 3rd outing. I'd used it in some hefty winds before that but this was something else, shored up with walking poles though, it was fine. I absolutely trust it to keep me safe in every weather now. My friend's Wild Country Coshee was getting tossed all over the place but stayed put and was undamaged come morning. He joined me in my tent but he would have been safe, maybe not rested but safe. Short answer: Can't go wrong with Terra Nova or their cheaper Wild Country brand.

I really admire you making this film Mari. People need to know about the risks and lows as well as the highs in this pastime. Social media can often paint an unrealistic picture of what our experiences actually are. I like a bit of bad weather camping but would have bailed out on that one for sure. It's good to know your limits and push through them when it feels right. And talking about experiences like these help us to overcome our fears and learn from them. Hope you are well, all the best, Andy

Unintentionally the best video review for the big Angus copper spur.. yeah a 3 season light back packing tent and not cut out for really bad weather. Every review you see the tuber has pitched it in their garden so nice to see it getting proper use. Anyway glad you made it off the mountain safely.

Thank you!! Appreciate you stopping to leave feedback. It really isn’t made for Scottish mountain weather…it just doesn’t have sufficient guy points really. Had they added a couple more on the right places, it would do fine. Such a shame coz it is such a beautiful and spacious tent…

Gives the phrase an 'edgy one' meaning Mari. Fantastic food - and the mist was food for thought. Ha ha! Well, you stuck it out all night and got back safe that's what counts. Good going. Mark

My friends off to Skye this week to photograph the Old Man of Storr so I had to show him this video. It looks amazing with the mist around it. That looked like a hellish night. Glad you got through it fairly unscathed. Hope you’re well Mari. 👍

So sorry for you Mari. Not often you see a video where you can tell someone is getting scared. But, you got through it without panicking or making a bad decision. That's the main thing. You're safe and will only be wiser for the experience. Skye is notorious for windy weather. Especially up on those ridges. Glad you're ok and looking forward to more of your adventures 👍👏❤️

Crikey, what a night, Mari! That wind must've thrown some force at you to snap the pole., because that is a reputable tent. But I'm so glad that conditions briefly lifted just enough for you to get those extraordinary spooky shots of the otherworldly pinnacles. I hope this misadventure won't put you off. You did totally the right thing to stay in the tent--if it fails as a tent, at least it continues as a cover. Normally the weight of our body and pack should stop the tent blowing away--but with your very light bodyweight, the danger of being swept away yourself must be magnified. Might be worth bringing a couple of Delta Ground Anchors in future, which should hold fast come what may. I had the same thing happen once, and since then I never camp on the tops. I might miss out on the classic evening and dawn panoramas, but I can see those views en route during the hikes. I don't feel I'm missing out, because I still camp in incredibly lovely spots. Perhaps I'm too cautious, but local weather can suddenly get lethal on the high mountains and moors, bearing no relation to the forecasts at all. Good luck.

Weather can sure be brutal. I must say, I would probably push on, but I often get myself into trouble because I’m too stubborn. You chose wisely. Lovely views!🤣 Dinner looked divine. This was a scary situation. Stay on the path! Monk

😳 Firstly, glad your OK and made it through the night safely. A terrible experience to go through and will shake you up a bit. You never rely on the online weather reports especially way up north in the Highlands and Islands. The experience you will gain from. The last time I was on Skye it was the same 70mph winds horrozontal rain zero viz.. Two days later after returning home, it was 70 degs clear blue sky's.. Can't win sometimes.. Stay safe. Hope to see you out n about again soon 😁

Wow, Glad you survived! It's not good when the weather catches you out! The forecast is often wrong in that part of the world. My dad is from Isle of Lewis and that has similar weather "problems". Its very unpredictable. 10/10 for effort though Look forward to your next adventures! ATB-Phill

Hope you keep at it. Ridge lines are not the best of places to set up a campsite. If you have no choice... You should try using a bivy and tarp in those conditions... Tarps can be pitched low and lower as needed and if you use trekking poles, not as likely to break. The Big Ag tents that are UL or all ultra light tents in general trade strength for weight. Good luck..🎪

Glad to see that you're ok. I can only imagine how scary it must have felt. Well done for managing it. I don't know if you follow Wildbeare on here (female wild camper), but she posted a video of a very similar experience that she had in Wales, not too long ago. Her weather app also didn't predict the high winds and her tent pole also snapped. 😬

Shame about the misty conditions but at least you were not going to starve. Not a nice way to be woken up at 01.00 and the weather forecast is really doing my head in at the moment, it seems to be the exact opposite of what it is forecast. The trail will always be there and if you are going to do it, you want to enjoy it, not much fun in those conditions, cheers Alan

A brave person for seeing out the night but also for sharing, thanks Mari. I've had my doubts about many American tents being suitable for pitching above the treeline. This is more evidence that perhaps some are not. Did this experience lead to you investing in the Soulo by any chance? Anyway, you know how I feel about your risk taking sometimes, and whilst we all tune in for your sense of adventure, we also want to know you are safe. Cheers. Rich 👍

Given that you already been waiting it out two days, I would myself carry on even with out the views if it was still early. I would have done the same stay in the tent if the wind already hit and pack every thing in the bag and use it to keep the tent off you. I would put all warm clothes on and waterproofs for a fast exit as well. leaving the tent would not be ideal. If you did need to exit i would crawl along the ground given your on a ridge by the edge. Not ideal as there is no wind shelter there. I had same happen in Cornwall my marmot tent got flattened i woke up with the top my tent on my face. In that case i escaped the tent and found wind shelter very near to me. That night a few people died a guys car got blown into the sea. Glad in the end for you it was all good. Shame the weather was not so kind for hike. You done the best bit of it really. All best Richard

That is not bad weather. Having been born in Skye You never trust a forecast and that goes for the rest of Scotland. Always assume the worst weather and you will be fine. That ridge has its own micro climate and I would never camp on top of the ridge. There are a few sheltered areas that I have camped in many times. It is a steep learning curve and we all have to start somewhere. Please be more cautious and always have a plan B ready in case you have to bail. Good luck

Skye isn't nicknamed the "Misty Isle" for nothing. Dull one on the tent pole snapping too Mari, I wouldn't expect that, hard to say but wind speeds would be best estimate from the footage 20-25mph. 🤔
