I don’t know of anything like this in the UK. Can’t think why not… For a start, you’d have to book your place via their ‘ever so handy’ app, which will screw up every time to go to input your payment card details; that’s around 20 minutes of your life that you’re never getting back. The big day arrives, and you arrive to find that the teenager who is supervising the entrance gate couldn’t be bothered to turn up for work today... but then who can blame him when he’s only getting paid £10/hour to stand outside in all weathers. So, there’s a bit of a queue. It took you two hours to drive here, so you stop by the kiosk for some refreshment; a cola/coffee/whatever, for which you will pay, in the Peoples’ Republic of Britain, around £3.50 (around $4.25 US or $6.00 Canadian, or whatever it is in the total mystery that is the currency of Euros). Then, in this ‘nanny state’ every participant would have to spend 15 minutes filling out health and safety forms. If you still had the will to live after that, there’s the 8 minute safety briefing to get through, which in the interest of inclusivity, would be in 9 different languages. But, the briefing would start 6 minutes late ‘cos some t**t didn’t arrive on time because they got held up on one of the UK’s vastly overcrowded motorways (‘freeways’ in the US). Finally, you get to the launchpad and you get in your cart. You’re just about to start, when the moron at the front of the line suddenly jumps up and shouts that he needs the loo (aka ’toilet’ or ‘bog’ or if you are from the US ‘bathroom’ or ‘dungy’ if you’re from Australia). He simply cannot wait the monumental 6 minutes of the length of the ride to go. Oh, no; he has to go now! So, after another 4 minutes, he’s back and ready to start. Bear in mind folks, that’s 43 minutes wasted so far for a 6 minute ride. The ride finally gets underway… and you’re off! But, even though you chose to ride the ‘expert’ course so that you can enjoy the wind in your hair (at least as much wind as you can through the armour plate that they force to put on your bonce (aka. ‘head’ in the US)) you get to the first bend to discover some selfish idiot has hit the brakes and is proceeding around the course at less than 1MPH (1.6km/h in Euro-speak). But, there’s nothing you can do about it. The UK is an ‘inclusive society’ which means, as every schoolchild born since the communist Labour party seized power in 1997 will tell you; ‘it’s the taking part that counts; not the winning’. And, so you cannot go faster than them because that would be discriminatory. So, you have to suck it up, and crawl behind them as you lament not only the 43 minutes wasted getting into this ride, but also the price. Yes folks, the price. In the UK, a ride like this would be around £20 per person (around $25US or $40 Canadian or who cares in Euros). Yes, I sh*t you not! So, all things considered, I think I’ve worked out why this kind of thing doesn’t often exist in the UK.
