Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson portrays the amputee character Will Sawyer in SKYSCRAPER! But how accurate did they actually get the portrayal of an amputee character?? I, a real-life amputee, weigh in. 😉

Once a long time ago (in the '80s?) I saw a movie called Quest for Fire, with Rae Dawn Chong. It was a really good movie and in my 70s (power chair user) I still remember many of the scenes. The movie is interestingly set in prehistoric times and there is (of course) no dialog whatsoever in standard English. This alone is enough to get a lot of folks to want to see it, but I digress and will now describe for you the one particular scene that involves an amputee. After a very exciting chase and fight scene, Rae Dawn is caught by a monstrous version of a gigantic stone age type of human(?) man. The giant had been hunting and clearly saw her as food. The scene cuts to her trussed up and hanging in a tree for later eating, presumably. I say that because he is already eating - a human arm, which he appears to have minimally roasted over his fire. We next see a shot over his shoulder of the tree where Rae Dawn is hanging from a low limb by both wrists and both ankles which are tied together. Hey, there are two chunks of human meat in the tree, the other one being a slender, naked young man who has only one arm and a bloody stump, but he is conscious. He tries to speak to Rae Dawn in some language that is gibberish. She doesn't understand, so he pantomimes as well as he can for her to run away - now, while the giant's back is turned. She struggles hard at her bonds and is starting to loosen them and then gets a hand free. She quickly releases her knots and reaches out to try to get her fellow victim free too. He looks at her with a pathetic expression, shifts his glance to his still heavily bleeding shoulder and to his arm being eaten by the giant, then back to her and shakes his head "no". He clearly means to convey "save yourself while you can", with frantic gestures. She runs off camera. That scene and several others are seared into my mind. It certainly is the one and only movie scene involving an amputee I can clearly remember at my age. And nobody says a single understandable word in the whole movie. The actors do a great job and the movie has been overlooked, I guess. I haven't seen it for rent or sale, but you might be able to get it nowadays. It would be worth the time to try to find it.

I feel like the film "Stronger" really did a good job showing life after trauma. It is about one of the men who lost his legs during the Boston marathon bombings. He struggled a lot mentally and physically and they don't shy away from showing it all like a lot of other films would have. It's super intense but I thought well done. Great cast, although again an able bodied actor in the lead roll.

There is a movie called Run (from 2020) where one of main roles is played by Kiera Allen, who is herself disabled, and her character is also disabled. Well, there are still plot twists and the movie is awesome, but when I learnt that the actress IRL is also disabled - that added additional authenticity to the movie.

Yeah, when I watched it, all I could say through the whole thing was “THATS NOT HAPPENING”. The part with the hammer was totally crazy. Once your leg gets out of line, it sometimes takes awhile to get it back in. Have to do small adjustments to get it back. The pin locks are strong, but not that strong.

I love love LOVED this video!! It was so entertaining and your humor is so delightful as always :D My suggestion for a movie to review is Dolphin Tale. It's a kids movie but it's about a dolphin who gets her tail amputated and the movie revolves around finding a prosthetic for her. There's also a disabled soldier character in the film (I don't know if he's an amputee?? The movie wasn't clear). While you may not be able to determine the accuracy of a dolphin getting a prosthetic, I'd still really enjoy you reviewing it and hearing your thoughts, as I enjoyed the movie when I watched it as a kid when it came out. Hope you're well, sending love, thanks so much for your awesome content

I have nothing to input on anything else but I do know some things about the strength of carbon fibre. If Kevlar is embedded into the layers of the carbon weave then yes, it can survive impact damage because the Kevlar would stop the projectile from breaking through. Also as for the doors I think it is possible for carbon fibre to actually survive that since it is very, very, very strong in tensile and compressive loads. I was watching a video from Mike Patey building a plane and he had a carbon fibre rod that he was testing to destruction and it survived that much load that the steel beam that it was being tested on BENT from the forces before the carbon actually broke. The full video is Testing to Failure (Scrappy Bush Plane 17) by Mike Patey

Brilliant video. I do agree that more disabled actors should be offered roles more when relating to their conditions. I am disabled myself. I think it’s hard when it comes to films when the character is initially not disabled or ill and then an event happens and then they are disabled as will need to include before and after. X

8:30 Actually, I have done this, sort of, in real life. I was at Scout camp, exploring with a friend near the top of a cliff when I heard him yell, "Help me!" I looked down and saw my friend hanging from a tiny ledge. I knew right away he could not hold on long enough for me to run for help, he was too far down for me to reach, and there was nothing I could lower to help him climb back up... except for my prosthetic leg. I took it off, holding it by the strap and had him grab the foot to pull him back up. This was back in the dark days (early 1980's) when legs still had straps so I had a good handle to hold unto. Unfortunately the strap was not designed to hold up the full weight of a 13 year old boy but somehow it held long enough to pull my friend to safety. I ended up having to leave camp to get my strap fixed, but my friend did help me hop back to camp. The cliff was about 50 feet high, so it would have been fatal for him to fall, but yea, this scene is 100% believable, because I have done something like it.

In fact, the safest thing to do (usually) in a high rise fire when the fire is one a floor below you is to shelter in place. Of course, if the fire is huge, this won't help, bet then if it's that big, you aren't getting out anyway.

I think there’s always problems with actors pretending sing to be something they have no real experience of. Musicians laugh at most music portrayals on tv. Computer people cry at the depiction of what we do (having just rewatched Jurassic park. I’d like to assure you Unix does not look like some kinda half baked flight simulator with buildings) Medical people usually pick a lot of holes with anything medical. While it could be impossible to get actors with real experience in some areas (how would you properly have experience of being a robot or an animal) there are times especially if the part is played by some z lister. Dude. Get someone who at least understands the theory. We are t claiming actors need to be prodigy’s in whatever but if there is a main trait of a skill they should have some basic grasp. Even if the music on set sounds like strangled cats or the computer skills are really basic typing make it look like you’re doing what is on screen. Nothing is crappier than it being obvious rot. (Bad dubs also count) So amputees are not alone. There are many actors who play musical instruments or who can type fairly well or could/would learn the theory and understand the practical aspects of a number of Medici procedures. Just as there are amputees who would play the relevant characters. An example I remember was Eddie Izard doing long John silver. Of course missing half a leg except of course everyone knows Eddie Izard has 2 full legs.

Hey, Jo! On the *original* "CSI" television program the Medical Examiner was played by Robert David Hall, a double below knee amputee. He appeared many times on the program and sometimes you could see him walking across the autopsy room, or around the table spouting the fifty dollar medical words that professional M.E.s use. The production, however, NEVER showed him in a long shot, nor do you ever see him below his thighs. Ever. I cannot say if it was in his contract to do this, but I do know that an episode director asked him if he could "ditch the sticks" and do the scene again. His response was that he, "kinda needs them to bloody walk" so no he couldn't. Just an idea, see if you can find the original CSI on Netflix, and give it a look see.

I saw this and loved it, I really like action movies in general and so I expected to have fun and it seemed to me (disabled wheelchair user but not amputee) that they'd done a really good job on disability stuff as a concept. I liked how it was portrayed in a bunch of different lights at different tines, just normal part of the day, an advantage, a disadvantage, a weird quirk of his particular body in this particular moment. I'm so delighted to know that not only did they do a cool overall job but it also sat well with you who has so much shared life experience with his character as far as amputation stuff. 6:50 Steve Austin could have done it easy, and he was, technically, a quadruple amputee. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HjGJeqkbFzg.html

Can you imagine if Tom Hanks was cast to play Martin Luther King in blackface? Even if he gave his usual, accurate, respectful performances, people would loose their crap. To be clear, I am not saying this should be done. I absolutely think it is *NOT* okay for a white actor to play a black character in blackface. So, if it's not okay for a white actor to play a black character in blackface, why is it okay for an able bodied actor to play a disabled character?

It’s not a movie but I recently read a book called shark girl and it’s about a girl who lost her arm from a shark attack and she had learn how to use a prosthetic arm and go back to school with everyone staring at her. I thought it was a pretty good book

That sounds like what happened in real life to Bethany Hamilton, maybe it was her book?

I know this isn't what was shown, but for the scenes where his ex-friend pulled his prosthesis off in the fight, and when he falls out(?) of the prosthesis hanging from the building, would it be plausible that his residual limb comes out of the lining, rather than the lining separating from the prosthesis?

watch ' Men Of Honor ' with Cuba Gooding JR , he portrays Carl Brashear the first black US Navy master diver who lost his left leg in an accident, Mr Brashear's life and story is really an inspiration

The real question should be why amputees don't get regular roles to play . They won't get lead roles without the ability to draw people to the theatre .

It is the same with using hearing actors/actresses to fill Deaf roles. I have several Deaf friends. We discuss this topic often. I am a left leg disarticulant (through the knee for those who are unfamiliar). I think they should cast true amputees, wheelchair bound, blind, Deaf actors and actresses to fill the roles of characters who have the same challenges.

I think there's a good way for some major movies to have able-bodied people play disabled characters, like actually consulting disabled people and ensuring accuracy which I personally cannot speak on how this movie does because I'm not an amputee. But there is also a bad way, such as Music by Sia which portrays an able bodied actress playing a non speaking Autistic girl, not much accuracy was kept and then Sia started insulting Autistic people for saying that she handled it wrong. As a non speaking Autistic, I can say that was horrific. I appreciate you sharing your view on this movie and am glad that it was portrayed well! 💕

I still think that you would love the show Kingdom. It's been put on Netflix recently and people are asking for more seasons. All about MMA.

Jo, have you seen Me. No Legs? It's on my list to watch so I haven't seen it, but I believe it's about a bilateral AN amputee that's a cop. There are over exaggerated fight scenes, and more B Rated Movie goodness 😊

If you'd want to do another movie/TV review, the second two seasons of Black Sails' main character is a below the knee amputee, and I thought the show had a really interesting portrayal of that. It seemed fairly consistent with the realities of being an amputee, as far asI've learned through watching your channel, but I'd love to hear an amputee's thoughts on it.

You should definitely react to Stronger. It's based on a true story of a double above the knee amputee.
