You got the eyepiece tray level but that does NOT necessarily mean the tripod head is level.
@DaveGIS123
@DaveGIS123 4 года назад
@2:30 If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend switching the two altitude bolts so the one with the longer handle is facing away from the north-facing tripod leg. That way you should get enough clearance. All the best from Canada.

@@AstroForumSpace I'm not certain but I think the "knob" is spring-loaded so you can get another bite in a more convenient angle.
@hbmike47
@hbmike47 4 года назад
You should not use the brace of the legs to check the level. Celestron leg hinges can bind up and throw things off. It's the same problem for a long time. Attach the mount and tighten everything down while pointing roughly north. Make sure the mount is tight to the tripod, and the spreader is firm. Lift each leg and pull out on it to be sure the legs are fully spread and retighten the spreader. Now adjust legs to level the mount using the bubble level on the mount base.

That ring is to alleviate belt tracking issues when you have pulleys that aren't parallel. I don't know if this has been said before but there is more than likely a way to adjust the parallelism of the two pulleys and that should stop your belt from falling off the pulley.

@kostasastro
@kostasastro 4 года назад
FYI the up-down buttons you mentioned is the dec axis and the left-right is the RA you got them mixed up. Also the small gear you showed where the metal thingy snapped is the motor and the big silver gear is the worm gear.😋 As for the eq-6r, i got myself this mount after the suggestion of fellow astrophotographers as an upgrade to my HEQ5-Pro and i am very disappointment in it. Short version for those who are interested in buying it don't do it. Just go for the CEM mounts. Long version of my issues 1. As seen in the video the bubble level is waaaaay off, use your own bubble level if you want a really good start for your imaging session. 2. The saddle is one of the worst i have seen. More specifically the paint it has makes it very difficult to slide the telescope in order to balance the DEC axis, the heavier the scope the more difficult to slide it on the dovetail. The bolts or the design of the saddle that are used are not the best and you need to check them after a few hours since they will get loose. Finally the two parts of the saddle have a height difference of 2mm thus resulting the scope to be slightly tilted once mounted, not to mention that the saddle does not grip the entire dovetail thus making it more shaky. I changed the saddle with an ADM one and my RC8 is rock solid on the mount and i have not those issues mentioned above 3. The grease they use for the worm gears i swear is nothing than glue and the axes are a bit sticky when loose making balancing a chore. I have serviced my heq5 mount regreased it with better grease and new belt drive system and balancing in my heq5 takes about 3 minutes whereas in the eq6-r i have to spend about 10 minutes. 4. There is a huge DEC backlash which must be addressed at some point as my mount is under warranty and i don't want to mess with the mechanical parts right now. The most important issues are no. 3 and 4 which makes drift polar alignment and PHD2 guide calibration very time consuming with poor guide results and a slight DEC drift is visible at my photos. In comparison with my eq6-r i can get at around 1.0'' of guiding accuracy on my RC8, i have similar results and on my ED80 and my serviced heq5 can get 0.5'' guiding accuracy. So i have to wait for the warranty and service the hell out of my eq-6r to get its full potential
@AstroForumSpace
@AstroForumSpace 4 года назад
Thanks for the info and feedback Kostas! Isn't the Eq6r-pro capable of carrying more weight than your HEQ5? Clear skies.
@kostasastro
@kostasastro 4 года назад
@@AstroForumSpace Yes and that is the reason for upgrading my mount. My heq5 has difficult time handling the extra weight i have put on the RC scope the last year i.e. power box, nuc pc, focuser controller and soon i will have a field rotator on my camera setup. The results i have with my eq6 are not the expected and with the first chance i get i will strip down the mount and give it a proper service for maximum efficiency. If you search Cloudy nights and Stargazers lounge you will find users with similar or worse issues with the eq6-r.

I think the worm is attached to the big gear and the motor on the small gear... just guessing based on the way bicycle gears work. Pedaling from a smaller gear to drive a larger gear = less effort.

Congratulations on your SW EQ 6R Pro. It’s unfortunate situation when you purchase new and have expectations that everything should work flawlessly. Especially for a a relatively expensive mount. The problem you found is actually easy to fix. I have the Orion version Atlas Pro. And I assure you will not be disappointed with its performance once you get up & running. But for the sake of principle, since it is new, should be brought back. If your impatient like me, and decided to fix it yourself, there should be a small grub screw that should fix the aluminum pulley onto the motor shaft. If this is the case, and you can locate it inside the housing somewhere, you can simply fix it yourself. You then should be good to go. Good luck whichever way you decide.

My plastic piece is still inside. I finished multiple sessions and it's guiding at sub arc accuracy, around .6 PE in ra/dec. That's actually all I was looking for so I'm happy. The motor is the small gear. It's called a "pinion" gear. You figured out what's wrong now call skywatcher, tell them to watch this video, send you a pinion gear, and something nice. I bet it comes off with an allen key but getting access might be a pita. I'd ask for that expensive automatic polar alignment thing from celestron. clear skys
@pierauspitz
@pierauspitz Год назад
Good thing though: contrary to commonly spread story, an equatorial mount does not need level to be polar aligned. The altitude and azimuth controls will be a bit less straightforward to use (as they will be slanted), but perfectly useable. As long as level is "close enough" to not have stability issues, you are good to go. :) Of course, if your view to the Polar star is obscured and you need to "rough align" by relying on the altitude indicator and a compass bearing, then, yes, level must be perfect...

Did you level your tripod on several points/angles with your bubble level? Yours is a one dimensional level and the mounts round bubble level is 2 dimensional - its quite impossible to be that off or they glued it in at an angle. Your mount head has to be level not your tripod and my EQ6R is not perfectly flat on the tripod (look at the tiny gap between head and tripod). Where you mount your scope is DEC and the lower axis is RA. My altitude lever is not hitting the tripod leg but I have the older version without the USB socket. But my latitude meter is off by 8 degrees ;-) I am at 42 and it shows 50 after phd2 drift aligning altitude. Clear skies!

It's amazing how close the assimilation is to the AVX, but they are built by the same company. I think they are starting to act like Celestron in the way they don't seem to care if it's built right and completely or not. When you showed the problem of the RA not moving I thought it was the same as the way mine was. Mine was slipping at the clutch. It was going fine and suddenly stopped guiding and tracking. The software said it was tracking but the PHD2 graph just very quickly went off the chart. I have to tighten my clutches extremely tight to keep them from slipping.I think mine is working ok now. We started about the same time with the EQ6R Pro. I use the USB plug on the side of the mount to control it by laptop. I've had to yell at my EQ6R a lot because sometimes guiding is ridiculous, especially to the south like -20 degrees DEC. 2.77"/pix is not much better than the AVX, but most parts of the sky are more like 0.69-0.90"/pix total. If it's close to the AVX it's not worth 3x the price. I only use a small refractor. I think it's just stiff right now.

Great video, I saw your mount selection video earlier and ended up going with the CGX because I got a good deal on it and it's just been a headache as well. Seems if you aren't spending the same amount of money on a mount as a new car manufacturers don't really do their due diligence when it comes to quality control. An EQ6-R Pro isn't cheap and you'd kind of expect a working product spending that kind of money. Sorry for your luck bud and hopefully it gets cleared up and you get back to imaging soon.

@@AstroForumSpace i see that you install the head of the mount in the way that it came in the box, try to change the black pin (the metal thing that is in the tripod plate, for left/right adjustment) to the other threaded hole, just in the opposite side, you just need to unscrew it to change it. With this change your mount will be pointed in the same direction that the front tripod leg and the altitude adjuster will be between the legs so you could rotate it freely. I think maybe that bolt handle that was hitting the leg should probably have been on the other side. The bolt with the knob looks like it was supposed to be there instead. Also, it's probably better to use the level that's on the mount instead of just levelling the tray, since the tray attachments might not be machined correctly. The level that's on the mount is "further up" so should be more accurate. If that makes sense.. But I'm not an expert on mounts, so I could be completely wrong.. But, great video, I quite enjoyed it!

@@AstroForumSpace Sorry, I guess my question was poorly phrased. Since the saddle is not keyed and the mounting plate can go either direction, what's the reason the telescope was oriented that particular direction. Seems like it could just as easily been mounted 180 opposite. How do you determine the correct orientation of the telescope? If it's mounted horizontal to the ground, does it need to point to the left or to the right?

The built in bubble level can not be trusted as one is assuming it is glued in perfectly; it rarely is. Also, checking level on the eyepiece tray is the same problem, assuming the tray was machined perfectly flat. Your best bet is to check level on the plate that holds the mount.

I would also check the other belt drive housing - perhaps I may find a butterfly in there :) Anyways, jokes aside, the ring washer that has fallen off looks like it is worn out. Even with that ring out, if the motor axis and the worm gear axis are properly aligned (i.e. parallel), and if the belt quality is high, it should not have slipped slip off. If the supplier fixes this replacing the ring, it is more than likely that the belt will have uneven stretching and tension caused due to misaligned axis and eventually tracking my be affected. BTW, that small gear is motor gear. And you are not alone with this problem - check this out www.cloudynights.com/topic/677062-eq6-r-pro-ra-belt-falling-off/. you should never base your level off of the accessory tray from my experience with several mounts that even when the top plate is perfectly level the tray is usually off the problem with these designs is you can't tighten up the tray without the mount head on the top plate being tightened up first and this can throw off the level of the top plate if when you tighten up the accessory tray it moves any of the legs out from when you leveled the top plate. its just not a very good design IMHO I always use the bubble level on the mount head if it has one but not all mount heads have them unfortunately got an EQ6-R Pro coming next week so will have to pay attention to the issue you were having with yours I hope its isn't a flaw in the QC from the factory time will tell I guess
