Ive seen this happen in person, work in algoma steel and on smoke breaks in one of the blast furnaces there is a balcony that overlooks an area where they do this, cool af to watch, especially on night shift and when the tires catch on fire

It’s wild to me that operator doesn’t lay that material out. He just throws the slag into water. He had a small reaction on the first bucket.

They are slick tires wrapped in chains about $30,000 a tire and the chains have to be torched off in order to change a tire but it's special thick ass rubber to handle up to about 2,000 degrees and lots of sidewall reinforcement .

Wouldn't EV loaders be better? I mean Diesel could ignite.

Yeah, it's such a missed opportunity. you are right...Imagine if they could harness all that wasted energy for something useful. It could make a real difference. but sometimes you can't do it.

They do, slag is recycled for many other purposes, I can't remember what they are, haven't looked at it since my indoc, but it is not just dumped to be forgotten Source- I work in a steel plant
