For the last 20 years, Slaid Cleaves' "One Good Year" is one of the songs that I "have to" listen to on New Year's Day. This obviously, besides celebrating the lives of Hank Williams (September 17, 1923 - January 1, 1953) and Townes Van Zandt (March 7, 1944 - January 1, 1997) who both passed away on this day and are both integral parts of the American song-scape.
@@left-handedstan4506 Yes I'm aware of that, Eddy & Billy Joe were friends of mine and yes I was at Poodie's (music club owned by former Willie Nelson road manager, the late Poodie Locke) that night, where Billy Joe was scheduled to play, showed up and received tons of support from musicians and friends.
I first caught Slaid way back at the Strawberry Music Festival. Immediately LOVED his songs and his stories. After his workshop i told him, "I hope you brought a lot of CDs, you're gonna need 'em". I asked later that weekend and he said they'd sold them all. The next time he played at the festival, a friend had come, brought his wife and her mom who had become a big fan. I saw Slaid on the dirt road, walking away from the music meadow and asked if he'd come say hi to Nicki's mom. He is just the nicest person. He came over, met them and stayed a while. I think I caught each of his online shows from home during the Pandemic. We still catch his shows at McCabe's in Santa Monica when he and Karen are out west.
I just discovered this guy last month. Love the simplicity of this tune and will incorporate it into my repertoire. One good year would be great after a bad decade...
I saw slaid cleaves at Riverbend bar in San Marcos I had just gotten out of prison doing three-year stretch while I was parked up slaid cleaves would come on kpft public radio he sang all that basically to me and my wife sat at my table him and his wife drank a lot of beer with him he was down to Earth by the end of the night it was like we were old friends best time I ever had at a concert
I've been chasing Grace ....but Grace ain't so easily found .................and if there's a better line been written recently then I don't know of it . I saw Slaid a few times over here in the UK and he is truly staggering 'live' .
Heard this for the first time this morning at 5:30 on the way to work. Reminded me of the first time I heard "Fork In the Road" by Green Day or "All I See is You" by Shane Smith and the Saints.
We wouldn't mind having Breakfast in Hell with Slaid Cleaves... Check out this exclusive backstage interview with the singer-songwriter: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pfGexbL57KE.html
Obviously you've not seen a Slaid show. Sometimes he has a band, sometimes only one other side person. I like him alone or with others. You should likely stick to the Nashville version of music.
