Slant 6 rocker shaft oiling modifications.

These mods start on the last bearing of the camshaft with a simple groove cut into it. The problem here is that if you leave the massive groove unrestricted then the rear main and number six rod bearing will have low oil pressure at idle when hot. To remedy this I tap for a set screw with a 0.109" or 7/64 hole cut into it. This will give almost instant oil to the valve train but will not flood the top end or drop oil pressure to the rear main and number six rod bearing. I will be building an engine for the Creamy Beaver and will do a step by step to show how it is done.

Thanks for the great info! I was a Chry/Ply dealership tech from 1982-1994 and I have serviced countless /6s and built quite a few, completely stock. Have never been a huge fan, but mucho respect for them and their creative fans/builders. I have seen one running and driving on 5 cylinders, with a roofing tar patch on the block and a big nail driven in the crank to stop the oil hemorrhaging from the bare rod journal (!!). I have an old '84 D100 4spd O/D truck that I was gonna 318 swap, but a .040" over sorta fresh 225 came up on Ebay down in Florida and the guy also had 2 x 400 BB Chrysler longblocks for sale cheap (well used), so I made the trek from central Ga. down to buy the whole lot. I think I'm gonna keep the shorty D100 slant now, with some block/head deck milling, a 264s, Aussie long runner 4bbl and some Clifford headers. Will be doing the rocker oil mod now! RB

Wow, that's nuts. Good fix bud. I'll be building a slant right along with ya. Thanks

I have been doing this mod for many years. But I put the restrictor in the rear rocker shaft stand. That way if you need to change the size of the restrictor, just remove the rocker shaft. No need to pull the head.

The "time" for the stock oiling system is on par with my Slant 6 cars. I have checked this on my 74 Duster 198 recently and it was showing oil on a 60 count. I was looking through the oil fill cap hole. Where did you find stock rockers? Good Find! I wanted to add that my '74 with 198 S6 has 20K original miles.

I found the rockers "New old stock" on Ebay and bought them 1 or 2 at a time until I had twelve of them.

I bought a 69 valiant many years back with over 200K on it - rattled and clattered bad - rockers and shaft were worn out with no oil on top. I read somewhere that the oil comes up the #5 rocker bolt and found a solid bolt in the hole. Instead of finding a drilled bolt, I ground off a flat on one side, chased the threads and reinstalled it with a better set of rockers - lotsa oil and quiet like a church mouse...

Very interesting. Where did you first learn of this tip? How is the location of the groove determined? Why does it work like this? Because of the setscrew restrictor?

I drove my slant really hard in So Cal and I was cooking rocker arms. I had to figure out how to get more oil to the top end. I just studied the oiling system to learn how to modify it so I could get more oil there. The oil groove is to connect the timed oil holes on the rear cam bearing. It works like this because "Hydrodynamics" . The set screw with the oil restrictor allows constant oil flow without flooding the top end and at the same time keeps high pressure below the set screw so the main bearing does not starve at idle.

@@SlantDailyGarage thx for prompt reply. It makes sense, but why doesn't the factory do this?

What did you use to put the groove in the cam? Angle grinder?

Has anyone ever upgraded the oil pick up on a Slant? I know from working on B/RB Mopar engines one of the oil system mods is to drill and tap the 3/8"npt pick up to 1/2"npt like they did with the Hemi engines. When I was buying parts to build my Slant I bought a Hemi oil pick up and compared it ro my stock Slant pick up and it only needs a slight bend to fit at the correct angle. (I can provide pics if needed)

on my channel I made a home made windage tray and I run BG oil additives MOA & RF-7 in the oil to help keep the bearings super lubed

What happened to the oil pressure reading after mod? May be just the oil pump needed to be serviced.
@SlantDailyGarage
@SlantDailyGarage Год назад
Are you asking if it dropped? The answer is no. In fact the stock slant six oil pump is more than enough for the engine stock and modified. I use the stock aluminum pumps and no real reason to change to a HV pump at all.

As for oiling on the bottom end, your restrictor screw is necessary. All Chrysler Corp engines, from the /6 to the 426 Hemi suffer from spun bearings under hard use. The reason? That K-member locates the oil pan sump to the front. On acceleration that causes oil to slosh to the rear uncovering the pump pickup, starving the engine of oil. The /6 has this problem as well. A 1/2" Hemi pickup won't solve this problem - probably makes it worse as it sucks the pan dry. The cure? No complete cure short of a dry sump oiling system. But homemade windage trays and oil pan baffles helps.

@@SlantDailyGarage excellent thank you. Does this apply to the Aluminum block as well or just the cast iron.
