Excellent!!! I'm a guitar player of 35+ years and only now getting into bass... Your voice/inflections are easily digestible, making it easy to follow you, as opposed to others that try and "DRILL" the info into you and throwing the info at you... Great job and thank you!!! M
I am a leftie bassist who plays a leftie and a rightie left handed. :) I love your videos Scott! I also love my drum kit and playing it too. I love both bass and drums evenly!
***** I know. :) That is what my band is: A bass guitar and a drum kit. Nothing is solid as yet as far as tracks go but a few are getting there. Hear some of the evolving tracks in my soundcloud account - link in my YT profile I think? lol
Scott's Bass Lessons Scott, can you play drums? I think it would be wicked if you could show us just for the fun of it in some future video you doing some drumming if you can drum. :) Nothing serious to try and teach anyone just a fun video for shits and giggles! lol
yea do that. Play the drums and then add the bass-riff. Let anyone who thinks they can add vocals to it and see what comes out. It's wold be very youtubish.
How are you doing Scott? I am lefthanded and learned to play my brother in law Rickinbacker Bass upside down back in the seventies. Had giving up bass playing in a gig after I got a lefty bass. Back then everyone just wanted the bass player to just hit basic notes so to shine the light on the lead guitarist. Well unknown to those I had played with they did not know that I have been playing guitar since I was 14yrs old and never stopped learning guitar. Trying to keep this short by saying I got so bored playing simple bass so I did not go out to play gigs anymore. About 5 Yrs ago I got a call that a bass player quit the band 1 hour before they were to be on stage so I grabbed my right and went to help them out. I began to play and about midway through the 1st song I realized I made a big mistake. So I adjusted and decided I am gonna play lead on my bass and it went great for me and I received a lot of great comments. Well I been wanting to return to learning Bass even better and you sir have shown me a lot of new ways to play bass and I thank you very much. I did stop playing bass due that is what everyone wanted me to do so I have just been using it to record at home because I am a decent lead guitarist and been playing gigs on guitar so now I want to switch around with playing both. I have been playing for 45 years now. Thank you for putting the bass back in my heart. I was robbed 6months ago of all equipment and beginning to build my equipment back. I was heartbroken due to being retired and it will take a while to get my tools back but I will. I watch a lot of your videos Scott. Peace brother, Sammy Campbell
Samuel Campbell hey karl here, I am lefty that is like you, play right hand bass upside down. I haven't played in 8 yrs. I want to start playing again. How hard was it to adjust to left hand bass? Thx
I'm only watching this to play the Seinfeld theme. To be honest, I'm only learning the bass to play the Seinfeld theme. To be even more honest, I'm only still alive to play the Seinfeld theme.
Holy moly! Was wondering why I was absolutely not getting a proper SLAP out of my bass all the time, until 3:28 ! This has opened my eyes! Thanks a ton! My action is rubbish... but then again, I'm still pretty much of a noob lol
great lesson! I am a guitar player for over +10 years and just started with the bass. Your lessons will bring me much further in exploring this instrument! Thank you!
Thanks for the clarification about the wrist rotation. I'm a drummer who happens to love the bass as well. My positioning was not correct and I was getting mixed results. Thanks for the words of wisdom.
Slap bass came out of Black churches. Larry Graham brought it to popular music, Louis Johnson modernized it, everyone else took it from there. Bootsy rarely uses it and is not known for it. The best and simplest way to characterize it is to "play drum patterns on a bass" where the thumb is the bass drum, and the pop/snap is the snare drum.
Had been wondering for so long why I couldn't get the sound - never would have crossed my mind that my strings were too high but it's so obvious now!! Sound advice!!
The "turning a door handle" thing is maybe the best advice I have received. Top notch. Made it easy for my brain somehow. Thanks much. Very helpful videos..
Your lessons are spot on! Your attention to detail is great and you're able to put your thoughts into words so well. This channel should have so much more views!
you're so awesome... i love all the tutoring method. altough i can't understand it all since i lack in english languange, but overall it's worth watched. thanks so much man...! you rock...!
thanks scott, U sure are good on that bass brother. much obliged for the pro insight & techniques. Your a good teacher. your probably creating a generation of slap monsters.
"to mr chat and not enuf slap". Mr Scott is exremely talented at slap bass he is simply giving an intro to beginning slap. Today's lesson for" TOO MUCH CHAT NOT ENUF SLAP" - GRACE my friend
His baby finger is an inch longer than my ring finger but I still love playing the bass. Just have to live with my physical limitations and make up for it with feel and groove.
note your hand should cover your face; heel to chin, forefinger and ring finger over eyebrows. Otherwise you may have a developmental disorder. In other words, "big hands - big face"!
Thank you. You have so many videos just remarkable. Is there a place where you have them numbered starting with 1 on. I'd love to go through them. Just love your playing and teaching.
YEAH!! Been waiting for more of these slap bass lessons! (Not saying I don't like the other other lessons, I especially love your theory and walking bass lessons) but hope to see more of these and how to create slap basslines/riffs over chords or when playing in a band as well!!! Loving your work as always. Cheers!
I've been playing slap bass for quite a while now and after watching this and a few other videos I just realised I've been doing it completely different this whole time 😂 still works though
thanks man, I was at guitar center the other day and I saw a band walk in to the bass section and they were slapping the bass and everything and I was so jealous since I'm a beginner bass player. and I was trying to figure out how to slap the bass with my thumb.
+James Gorden like a month but with school and just chores never have time I play in the bathroom lol because I have time in the bathroom obviously. and I don't have a teacher to teach me so yay
I know what you mean. I've played bass for 4 years and I can pluck it pretty well but never learned how to slap. it's Kind of embarrassing when you practice and play as much and as long as I did. it's tough to learn at first, especially since you have to build a sort of new callus on your thumb. but you'll get there eventually. I'm self taught, this was the only tutorial I looked up since this technique is foreign to me hahaha. good luck my friend, those were just a few bassic tips ;)
Any tips for getting a good solid sound (when thumbing) on the D string? I get good volume on on E and A, and the sound vanishes on the D, or I get a harmonic. Thanks!
Thanks scott!! You're bass sounds sooo good.. do you have tutorial on how to engineer different sounds of bass with and without effects. In my bass amp there were adjusters that i dont know what for, maybe those adjusters has to do something to make me sound good..
Greetings, Scott! Your Sound is Exceptional and Your Explanations are Perfect! I have used similar explanations with my students for many years and find yours to be outstanding! Thanks for including a brief history of what our craft was like Before the Internet. Your Honesty is Greatly Appreciated and Very Impressive(Nice to know I'm not alone.)! Best Regards, - Ernie Leblanc, "Into the Bass!"
Great vids. Really enjoying them. Having been playing for many years (40+)... I am trying to see if this old dog can learn new tricks. On the slap style, how do I get that clean sound on the low E? Should I get my guitar techie to raise the strings? BTW, what strings do you reccomend?
Hey Scott what are you playing in this video mate? Its such a nice looking Bass. Has a Pbass look to it kinda, Love LOVE that natural wood grain with the black guard.
Hey Mr. Scott, I saw a video where you are playing "Human Nature" I would like to see the video complete, I'm looking for but I don't see it, the video isn't here??
Been playing for over 10 years now and have just never gotten into slap, just not my cup of tea I guess. I don't really actively listen to music that features it, but I want to learn in order to have the weapon in my arsenal so to speak. Really appreciate the ideas on growing myself into it.
I'm having trouble with this. I keep hitting others and when I dont I can't produce a loud enough sound. I have fat hands Haha so I'm starting to think that's why....
as a guitarist picking up a side skill i didn't realise how important the higher notes were to the slap base sound until i watched this video. i could never get the grove cheers
Hey Scott, I love your stuff! I've recently started to develop a similar shake in my left hand and was wondering where you got your glove or how to go about getting one to try for myself. Thanks for everything you do man!
Hey Scott can u please make another video of the same grooves this time play it more and tell us what not you are hitting exactly cause that groove is nice man ... my name is Alain from Brooklyn New York
The forearm consists of the Ulna and the Radius. The Radius is on the "thumb side" and it rotates with your hand as you turn it. You mentioned bones in this video, so just an FYI. Great lesson as usual Bro.
Scott, Thanks for the video. For the first time I think I have a fighting chance to learn how to slap. I thought of bombarding you with many questions, but I will stick to the most pressing one: What do you do with your middle, ring and pinky fingers? I am finding it necessary to support & stabilize my right hand hand with my middle finger off the pickguard while I pull with my index finger. I think I see you doing the same, but you make no reference to it! Please, elaborate!
I think your problem is that you mute the string with the side of your hand. Be sure to not to rest your hand on the stings, I think that will solve your problem
Hi Im a Korean who really enjoy watching your bass lessons and I have a question for slap. When I try to practice slap I usually put my pinky finger on the body of the bass guitar is it okay to do??
Louis “Thunder Thumbs” Johnson was in between Larry Graham and Miller. Saw the Brothers Johnson in 79 at their height : check out Mr Cool and Aint We Funkin Now for the slap
