There is something very satisfying watching a skilled artisan, who takes a pride in his work, doing what he has learned over years of acquiring his ‘art’. The fact that he does not damage what he is trying to create in the process, is no accident. Avoiding clumsy moves or misplaced steps is as important as careful measurement and preparation. Complicated and compound angles require agile mathematics, particularly when accommodating the inevitable variation of build. The older the age of the original building, the more likely it’s not going to be symmetrical. Thanks Wills for showing you and your team in action. It’s a nice job that looks superb.

@@davidyip5557Aye, I see that at 13:39 mins, a full width instead of 2 narrow ones would have fettled that. Well spotted, but an absolutely awesome job overall one must say (and I think NHL5 lime should have been used on the stone copings too, incidentally, but not knocking the job overall).

Excellent job. The only problem I see is to the right at the top of the valley at 15:01, the seams almost meet up. I'm unfamiliar with slate work so I wouldn't know how to fix that without vertically chalking the right side of the dormer using the slated left side as a template. But I really admire the hard work put into this job.

You're right about the side lap, there's probably a piece of lead underneath. Marking perpendicular lines on the roof battens can help avoid this. I feel picky mentioning it - I've learnt a lot of tips from Will, and don't give my time for free to assist/educate others. He's clearly an excellent roofer.

Loved it. I watch a lot of construction videos that tell you how to do a job, step by step. I’m never going to re-slate a roof myself so sometimes I just want to know what is involved so should I ever need a roofer to do it for me, I know what’s to expect. I wish more videos took this approach. Excellent thank you..

That video was a masterpiece! Hugely entertaining and wonderful to see the process from roofer's nightmare to a beautifully finished slate roof. I loved your positive, friendly attitude and great teaching skills. I came to the video to find out how to safely move, walk, stand and sit on my slate roof so I can drop a chimney liner down for a woodburner. I was carefully watching to see how you positioned your self working on the roof without damaging tiles but ended up learning a lot more about roof construction and renovation. Many thanks for making and sharing the video, Will. You are the King of the roofers!

Great video! Wish I'd got into roofing when I was younger. A few things confused me, so I have a couple of questions... 1) I always thought the roof felt had to have a slight dip in between the rafters so any rain that got though a broken slate would pool into that dip and run all the way to the bottom...otherwise it could run/spread any which way on the way down including over where the new rafters are nailed through the felt, compromising the watertightness...is that not really necessary? 2) Why is the wood you installed blue? Waterproofing treatment or something? 3) Why did you install cut slates on the vertical behind the lead step flashing? Thanks for taking the time to film this job.

Great videos! Does anyone have a recommendation for the best underlay for slate? I'm struggling to find reviews as most membrane companies demonstrate using their product with battens (the English way) therefore allowing for an air gap between membrane and tile/slate, they seem to suggest this is important, so whats the recommended membrane designed to be sandwiched between sarking?
@leehensey
@leehensey Год назад
If it is traditional slate then over fascia vents, breathable membrane and dry ridge system is fine but you need to cut out 30mm of the membrane either side of the ridge tree, if man made then you need counter battens or a non breather felt, hope this is useful, please see the Marley roof site for more x

A friend & I are planning on doing my roof, but re-slate using the good original removed ones, plus remainder using good second hand ones. Cannot stand the sight of those horrible cheap clay pan tile things, pile of crap!. So hats off to these guys for giving us some inspiration to tackle these jobs. Noticed they used a slaters hammer, but I've bought a slate ripper tool for getting the slates off. Not sure if I've got the right tool for the job now after having watched this. I'm not trying to pick fault here but you haven't graded the slates thick medium thin and check out time stamp 15:02 you are half a slate out at the top of the valley and as a result its bond on bond mate. You should have struck the roof out for your bonds and worked it out down the other side of the valley. Also you dont nail lead with ally nails they corrode away because of dissimilar metals you should always use copper nail when fixing lead

Another very nice video showing how it's done. Makes me feel I could do it myself, but I'd screw it up quickly! I have a question which I've posted on another of your videos, but will post here too, to see if anybody can help. I'm in the process of buying a bungalow in the Lincolnshire/Cambridge border area and the survey has shown that there are 30, 40 or perhaps 50 slipped slate tiles, which also includes others that have been repaired using tingles. Some roofers have advised that the individual slipped/broken tiles can be repaired/replaced, but others have advised that it would probably be better to just redo the entire roof. The thinking is that if the nails are failing leading to slipped tiles (presumably because they're not copper?), then as soon as you replace them, others will start to fail for the same reason i.e., rusty nails, so you may as well just do the whole roof now? Does that logic make sense? And I have been told that in the process of taking the existing tiles off, probably 50% will break, hence you would need to buy about 50% new tiles. Does that sound right? Seems from the other video I watched that a loss/breakage rate of 50% would be on the very high side, but according to this video not. And so far, I have only been able to get quote for a whole new roof, not by re-using as many of the existing tiles as possible. Why is that? Why doesn't anybody want to do the job using the old tiles, which is what I want as the customer and which will, presumably, be cheaper? Any advice would be welcomed. Cheers.

Could not believe it when they were installing the lead valleys. They nailed all the lead all the way down the tilting fillet. This will result in the lead rising and splitting in about a year. Lead has a high expansion co-efficient and expands and contracts fairly rapidly along its length. The correct method as laid down by the Lead Development Association is only to nail the top one third of the valley and never nail two sections together, this gives you the required expansion requirement. I don’t think these guys are college trained

Video started great but then you ran slates up the abutment and after cut out the brick joints and covered everything in dust, you only need to make a few measurements to enable the the cutting at the felt stage but your worst crime was running slates up in a line meaning you have to wing the others adjoining them as slates need to be fixed both sides to be secure not winged! The end ridge is a finial ridge and should be put on the front most apex x

Great Job! I’m having to organise the re-slate of our church roof, it’s something of Mansard design with an addition 6 slopes. It’s a massive job and I hardly know how to get the ball rolling. We’re really concerned of the cost and even where to source decent slate. We think the existing slate is random scotch slate and is utterly nail sick. Probably 150 years old! Could you possibly give me some pointers as to how we go about getting a contractor and what we could do to ease the costs. What slate and where we might source the slate. It’s a list 2 building in the heart of Glasgow U.K. I’m a retired carpenter, I’ve done some roof work including fibreglassing but this roof is way too big a project for me and a couple of mates who are handy.

Hi A&E, great channel. I own a small building company and am looking to expand my business by taking on two apprentice carpenters, I mainly do Home Renovation projects. I currently work by myself and employ subcontractors when I need them, ie Carpenter, Labourer, Spark, Plumber, Tiler, Brickie etc. Would love to know how your company structure works? Who are the core team and who are sub-contractors? Finding and employing good Apprentices? Maybe an interesting topic for the podcast. Thanks guys
