What a stupid argument! There are no statues in the UK dedicated to Hitler but I know who he is. One statue of one of the many British slave traders in a city you rarely visit is hardly going to educate you.
I'm of Polish descent. Polish people are slavic people. Slavic people, or slavs for short, have been conquered and enslaved for so many more centuries than black people that it dwarfs black slavery completely. In fact, slavic people, or slavs for short, have been enslaved so many times over the centuries that the word slav is where the modern english word slave came from. Polish people were also in the Nazi concentration camps along with the jews as well. The vast majority of the black slaves in America were all owned by only a tiny percentage of white southerners. So, the vast majority of white Americans are not related to slave owners in the past. And, both white and black people from the north died in order to end that slavery in the Civil War. So, the next time someone of _any_ colored skin tells me to "check my privilege" simply due to the color of my skin, I say, check your history, and your racism.
Because Africans where selling slaves in the 17th century to any one who could afford it. He broke no laws, unlike the rioters who destroyed his statue.

People were aware of Colston's history and tried for years to have his statue removed through formal representations, but some grew frustrated and finally took direct action. They did so because he was a symbol, but more importantly he highlighted how England held a very prominent role indeed in colonising Africa, and the use of slavery. It held dominion over more people on the continent than any other colonial power. Those who say you can't judge the past with 21st century hindsight are simply wrong. To brand, chain, and consign someone to the bowels of a ship sometimes for weeks on end, with minimum food and water, and for them to lie in their own filth was seen as an affront to human rights and dignity, and immoral by many at that time too. They included social reformers,Quakers and other Christian thinkers, and politicians. As a middle-aged white guy my experience of being racially discriminated against is somewhat limited. But,present day events have convinced me,at least, that studying the history of colonisation years ago as a module, part of my degree, was not an irrelevant waste of time.
I hope those protestors develop the integrity to recognize that every culture participated in slavery and that few have worked as hard as the British people to eliminate it. Not everyone who owned slaves deserves to be singularly defined by that, and there are virtues that may have overshadow their shortcomings.
