These two are amazing and we mortals cannot appreciate the amount of effort that goes into presenting such a smooth routine. I can only aspire. I recognize many of these steps and I love how they've added some really nice flare to the steps. I've watched this a dozen times and will continue to watch it as I can learn a ton of info, wish I could watch it in slow motion to catch the detail. These two are incredible, I bought their DVD for Bronze, Silver and Gold steps thru DanceVision.
I am so JEALOUS! It has that certain sway and feel of the samba. But what do I know? I'm just obsessed with a dance I could never do. ^_^ I wish I could dance like that.
the movement is not just either from the knees or hips or stomach...The movement, the impulse is givem by the feet and knees using bounce action, but that impulse is contained in the stomach,so that the upper side of the body(chest, head) doesn't go up and down...but still the impulse must go somewhere, and that's why if you keep upper side still and contain bounce energy in the stomach, clean hip action will apear :D
even though i have read so many bad comment about this video, i still applauses the dancers for their performance... they are so fortunate to have a flexible body like that...good job guy!...
As Quad said above, Brazilian Samba and competition Samba are two entirely different dances. I have spent a good deal of time in Rio, and was there for 2 months over Carnaval. I even went with friends to an escola de Samba for rehearsals. I have danced both and they are nowhere near alike, other than that they have that magnificent Brazilian/Latin Beat. Don't be offended--just enjoy them both. But, whatever you decide, they are both the Samba--one Brazilian; one Latin ballroom.
I love Karina. Together with Slavik they are five times US National Professional Ballroom Champions. For me she is the best female dancer on the American DWTS.
Slavik is the master of hip movement! It comes from the ankles and the knees, not just the hips. He's releaseing his ankles and straitening and bending his knees. He's also settling his hips back and also he stretches up creating more flexibility and movement through his spine. Oh yeah, and his abs are working like crazy to give that lovely sharp clarity of movement! Karina does all the same but in 3" heels, no problem!
Nr 1 Couple in the world right now is by far Bryan Watson&Carmen...after them there's michael malitowski and joanna leunis or...slavik&elena...there are many others but in this moment i think these 3 are the top couples
@17teacmrocks I agree with you. Hip movements emphasize the syncopation of samba. The technique used in international ballroom and other dance genres is called shadow figure: both female and male dancers imitate each other. Some may call it mirror technique if it is done face to face. Brazilians refer to either folkloric samba or street samba in their comments. International samba does have steps from its roots. People don't recognize them because they don't know about technique.
I have been told the reason that we say ballroom samba is like bazilian samba is not necessarily because of the look of the dance, but more with the music. After listening to both a true Brazilian samba song and americanized samba beat, both had the same effect on me where... Well, where the music "moved" me, and I began to dance to both. I think we took samba music, slowed the tempo down, and maybe took some of the drum beats away, but getting past that I think we created a dance that would fi
euro ballroom is mysterious to me. dancing with the stars jibberish where they do "latin" euroballroom dances to soft rock or pop is *very* mysterious to me. that said - this clip is all right. some of this stuff can be used in other dances like salsa , zouk lambada, bachata or whatever.
This is a wonderful samba! I would love to be their students. . . .just wonderful, charismatic and sexy, what more can I say! I used to dance samba when I was a little girl and this is just beautiful! Love watching them and they have chosen a great song!
Why can't people understand that this is BALLROOM SAMBA?! is not brazilian samba, it has nothing to do with Brasil, this kind of samba is part of a group of rythms that are danced in competitions all around the world, so stop comparing the brazilian samba with the ballroom samba!!
Hello, i just wanna say that this beautifull presentation is what they call "International Ballroom Samba", a type of european dance that was developed from Maxixe - a extinct type of african-brazilian culture - not from samba. All the things that happen in samba culture for the last 70 years are still a unexplored field for europeans. Its time to explore it! Look for samba de gafieira (Jimmy de oliveira) in internet. It would be great to have a real samba version of samba in europe!
Ages ago now. Slavik was still brilliant with Elena, but Karina suited him more. Don't know whether it was something to do with their height matching better. Whatever, Karina was one of the best females in Latin.
@ngattuso08 It's not their fault that the British named this dance Samba 70 years ago. Also, by adopting it there, this particular dance stopped being Brazilian culture. Ballroom dance would acknowledge that the origin of the dance come from Brazil; but only ignorant people would confuse this with your dance. Regarding the dance being bad - well sure, it is bad if you are judging for being a Brazillian dance. But it is not.
@maecellify No , you are right , they dance very well. I saw in your channel a couple dancing and i must say that couple are nearer of samba than this couple above. Imagine you if a person takes a Japanese song put some Japanese dance moviments and say: This is the Tinikling dance from Philippines.
I am very suprised, that someone is selling this as a samba, this is everything - less a samba. Kind of gipsy-movements and spanish elements, but not even one basic step or movement or figur from ballroom samba - like we do it in Brazil, where samba comes from. Peter Echevers
@XtremeDance10 Slavik coaches out of New York charges a lot I've heard. Karina coaches out of California sometimes NY. Not sure what she charges. He's doing more coaches though than she is. If he's at comps doing shows you can always get coaching then from him, it depends on the organizer. But at Millenium in FL he had coachings booked all day!
I think I was correct their mostly syllabus steps and as the video title says some of them we're innovated lol for an open figue (like that separated corta jaca)
@u2bMODERATOR ...good for you...i'm not saying you are.. i even respect your replies.. i guess i'm just easily amazed by how they made it look so easy... maybe i'm one of those people who doesn't completely understand the standard of this dances but the way it looks good in my eyes... :)))))).. tnx again..good day to you..
Dude Brazilian samba is danced by solo or groups ... International samba is danced in partners... and its a basic count is the same.... 1 a2 only in brazilian its super fast and has a lot of play in it and in international you can count the steps and its very much more formal.
@u2bMODERATOR .. ^^.. good for you.. your not fake and you are not afraid to say what you want to say.. you're right...dancing has it's standard that not many people know.. i can't deny that i don't know it either..i'm easily amazed by how easily they make it look...that's just me i guess :)))))
Hi, I think latin ballroom is really an interesting and beautiful dance.... but, I was trying to figure out the link to the original samba... I mean, why do they call this samba, since they are playing a kind of hispanic american pop music.... I don't know, cause samba is much more influenced by african moves, that I can't see in this dance. Not complaining, just being curious.... But please, brazilian samba is not just a "carnival music"...
@Keeliv: Great comments. I agree 100 percent. Too many latin americans think their dancing way and only their way is the correct way to dance. It's to bad they cannot see and except other versions. What a boring world this would be if there was only one way of doing things. You described them perfectly, narrow minded enthnocentric fools (tools).
Dance is ever changing, ever developing, ever altering art. Slavik and Karina also do have a showcase of Argentina tango as well! Go and see, it is here, in youtube. If you like your, folk samba, then -dance! By all means, dance it! be best in it!
i demonstrated basics from international samba at a brazilian pro samba team practice - they loved it. never heard of "man cannot have feminine hip movements" 123 ppl don't know dance.
@anonymous10001000 I don't know about a certain dance, but even Ballroom Samba went through a lot of changes in the last 50 years of constant development.
Nossa..eles são demais..só acho q deveriam usar musicas brasileiras pra dançar o samba..iria ficar beeem melhor! Iria dar muita diferente..e tem várias musicas maravilhosas pra isso!
what do you mean this isn't a samba? you need to learn your ballroom dances before commenting missy..... Slavik is one of the best latin ballroom dancers out there!
@maecellify heheh peoples think im trying to be Patriotic or Brazilian culture protector . But it is not . I´m Just trying to explain that some dancers and singers use the lack of knowledge of peoples in some issue to make them swallow their performance. As peoples use to call champagne the Sparkling drink made in another region or country, but Champagne is just the drink made in Champagne in France.:P Blessings!
@AceyBlade you JUST proved my point..............you are saying exactly what i just disproved, a tempo does NOT equal a style of music.....and it is not enough if the piece has the correct tempo......... and how can you not correlate music to dancing??????? do you not agree that you dance hip hop to hip hop music?? salsa to salsa music?? SAMBA to SAMBA MUSIC?? rumba to rumba music?? need i go any further??
Slavik can learn Brazilian samba in 10 minutes. Give a guy 10 years and he still won't be able to dance this samba like Slavik. Stop trolling and appreciate the great dancing.
There is no need of stupid comments, about who was born where or who does or doesn't dance like the two on the video. Without sarcasm and just in a professional way of a dancer I can say, this is exactly what in ballroom they call samba. But this stilistic samba is suffering the same loose of character like the ballroom tango, what has nothing more to do with the original tango, wich by the way was born in Buenos Aires. Street samba and ballroom samba come from Brazil, if they like it or not.
I am tired of all "This is not the idiotic booty -shaking hot mamma brazilian samba" comments so I've deleted all of them,in respect for these 2 great dancers...
Wrong. Samba is a combination of slaves´ drum percussion with old folk portuguese, both played with brazilian and portuguese instruments (chords and drums). It´s true that the drum beat came from Africa, but in Brazil it got a tottally different mood, when combined with all those elements. It lead to the creation of a totally new kind of music, that today are diverse from african drums.
These two are better dancers than any one commenting could ever hope or dream of dancing like. Every one says Brazilian Samba is "way better", so I looked up some of these videos to see how "amazing " it is and please! The women have zero back action or hip rotation the guys are stiff as boards and they just do a bunch of tricks, leg flicks and bounce a lot . His movement is true rhythmical hers as well. I wouldn't say he has "feminine" hips though just because he can move them!
People I´m sorry to tell ya that this is not Samba but in my opinion this dance looks nice. They only should invent another name for it couse it is not Samba.
@anonymous10001000 English was the language of England. That did not stop people from your country from butchering it, didn't it? Dances evolve. That's life. Two centuries ago, Samba did not even existed. So chill.
@ngattuso08 xaxaxaxa this is not brazilian samba this is something completely different so think and search before you post something in pablic. this is maybe the best dancers in latin-international that we see the last 10 years... get serious!!!!!
