@Rick Ross There is no major distortion in Slayer music. Compare Slayer with Old Metallica , Annihilator and Sepultura. Slayer's tune is not thrash sound. Slayer is aggressive Speed Metal faster than Over Kill and Megadeth . These bands are not Thrash Metal. What made these bands great in the 80s is their non mainstream legacy and aggressive lyrics. Of The BIG FOUR only Metallica was pure thrash. Metallica defined the thrash metal sound in Master of Puppet and took it to the mainstream with and Justice for All. Sepultura combined the Thrash distortion with guttural vocals.

Ryan Johnson let me tell you, I’ve been a SLAYER FAN for 35 fucking years and not once have I ever thought or saw them promote racism or hatred towards another race or human. They used imagery to talk about Angel of death by talking about what Joseph mengela committed towards the Jews and others alike. Did they use pictures of German helmets with swastikas on them? Yes! Was it authentic and real? Yes, it depicted Nazi Germany. Was it how they truly felt? Hell No!!! Jeff was a history buff when it came to his fathers war and that in no shape or form classified him or Slayer as Nazi sympathizers in the least. They did the history research and brought it to life in a song. Let’s keep Jeff’s name clean and honor him by not calling him or Slayer, racist bc they aren’t.

Love that you're reacting to Slayer. Slayer have never posed with swastikas! Or worn them or promoted them or anything of that nature. Two of the original founding members are from Chile and Cuba and are Hispanic. They sing about all the dark subjects. Hanneman's father fought against the Nazis. To speak of a crime is not the same as endorsing it! Slayer is like a horror movie. Lots of dark imagery and so forth. But not to be taken seriously. The lead singer Tom Araya is a Christian. Even though they sing about all kind of satanic subjects. Doesn't mean they're promoting it. Maybe they're warning against the dangers of evil. More Slayer by the way thank you

Indeed. Slayer have two songs involving the nazies, Angel of Death and Behind the crooked cross. Angel of Death is a viceral and graphic condemnation of Dr. Mengele, not just describing some of the horrors he comitted, but pulling no punches in describing him as a sadistic serial killer who found a station in life that would allow him to be a sicko ("Rancid angel of death, flying free", these are not kind words to describe someone with). Real Neo-nazies of course are Holocaust deniers, they want to belive it never happened, and would never write a song like this. Behind the crooked cross describes a German soldier who was swept up in the Nazi ideology before the war, only to discover too late durring the war that he is fighting for the bad guys. It's a song about the horror of being trapped in a war machine that he nolonger belives in, that he feels is tarnishing his very soul, but he is still just one man, he can't stop this war machine. In the end he vows to do only the bare minimum ordered of him and nothing more, because this is his only means of resistance, and prays that he can live with the shame of what he has done. No Nazi would write a song like that, not in a million years.

They just didn't understand what the big four what is really about but it's what made me so much more well-adjusted then all these other so-called good kids I've adopted special-needs and do more for others than I do for myself. But I'm the black sheep of the black sheep on both sides my family. And I'm still wearing those evil satanic racist t-shirts where's my goody-goody cousins prison rehab and living with their parents yes I rub it into my aunts & uncle's all the time! They tried to take Me in and raise me right my parents did a better job but this point needs the strict+military+ religious guidance but haha you should see how their kids turned out

Its nice to see you react to some serious, aggressive metal. Now, are you willing to get your feet wet in something even heavier? If so, I recommend Deicide. The song I would choose is Dead by Dawn. They make Slayer sound like 70's soft pop.

Fun fact, Kerry King plays the guitar solo on the Beastie Boys song You Gotta Fight (For Your Right To Party) and also appears in the video, mostly because both band were with Def Jam Records at the time. And yes, I know, NERD.

Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman wrote "Angel of Death" after reading books about Nazi physician Josef Mengele while on tour with the band. He said that he remembered "stopping someplace where I bought two books on Mengele. I thought, 'This has gotta be some sick shit.' So when it came time to do the record, that stuff was still in my head-that's where the lyrics to 'Angel of Death' came from." The lyrics are written both from Mengele's point of view and from that of a detached observer condemning his actions. They detail Mengele's surgical experiments on patients at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. Mengele's explorations were conducted on such groups as dwarfs and twins, and included both physical and psychological examinations. Among the tests he performed that are mentioned in "Angel of Death" are experimental surgeries performed without anesthesia, transfusion of blood between twins, isolation endurance, gassing, injections with lethal germs, sex change operations, the removal of organs and limbs, and abacination.

Slayers role in the Big 4 they created their own genre of metal it was newer than thrash metal it was essentially the grandfather of death metal because if you listen to Metallica Anthrax or Megadeth you don't get any of the types of lyrics that you'll get with Slayer but if you go read some of the lyrics of any death metal band those are socially aligned with Slayer. Soulslayer is essentially the grandfather of death metal in America and besides they started the way before the other three bands show no mercy came out in 1981 kill'em all till 1983 I don't know when Anthrax first album came out and I want to say that Megadeth's first album came out in 86

It should be noted, Slayer never endorsed Nazi ideology, they like many other Metal bands used icons as a form of anti-establishment. Mind you, Kiss, a Jewish band, did the same. It was purely for shock value. The song Angel of Death wasn't meant to praise Josef Mengele, it was meant to demonize him and the atrocity that occurred during the Holocaust. Many of the members of Slayer spoke out against Religion as a means to kill and oppress others, but they also spoke out against those meaning to kill those of a religious, ethnic, or other group. The irony is, many neo-nazi's couldn't put 2 and 2 together and thought they were praising them. It's almost poetic how funny it really is when you look back on it.

Slayer felt they needed to put the things this man (Mangala) did into awareness using a non bias approach to the lyrics and laying it out raw for listeners to come to their own opinion of the things this man did.

The Guitar solo is Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman going back and forth. Jeff was a complete musical genius. The majority of their work was either created or co-created by him. As a band they are probably the most cohesive front 3 in metal history. They did switch out drummers from time to time. Dave Lombardo was a co-founding member and in my opinion their best drummer and one of the greatest drummers in music period.

I've seen one picture with a Nazi flag in the background in 30+ years of fandom, and I think that was a flag that Jeff's father brought back. His father was a Nazi killer in the war. This song is just a story about a man and his evil atrocities; a documentary if you will. Terms like 'Rancid, Angel of Death...' show that the righters saw him or his actions as rancid. That doesn't sound like they were supporting the Nazi view. "Sadistic surgeon of demise"...not like people call those they endorse "sadistic'. Slayer song types (lyrics) Tom written = serial killer stories Jeff written = War war war stories Kerry Written = anti religion stories
@John57945

They are not neo Nazis, quite the opposite in fact. Jeff Hanneman their former guitarist who died several years ago was a collector and had an interest in WW II history and the Nazi party. However, he was approached by neo-nazis at one point in their career to give a speech at a neo-Nazi rally which Jeff turned down. He indicated that he was interested in the history of WW II but did not condone the actions of Germany and was appalled by it. So yeah, I don't know anything about them wearing swastika armbands but anything about Slayer being Fascists is pure and absolute bullshit. To prove that point they put out 3 videos from their album Repentless, first song 1) You against you, 2) Repenetless and 3) Pride & Prejudice. If you watch those videos and they are not for children under the age of 18 you will understand that they are completely against Fascism. Plus, Tom Araya, the bassist and singer is a Hispanic, Chilean to be exact. So what you read on whatever website is fake BS.
