One month out from a stroke. So sleep deprived it hurts.on days where I’ve managed some sleep,I see progress in my therapy. The rest of time I feel my progress hampered.there’s no way to my my thinking that this doesn’t factor hugely into everything from my emotions to my physical progress. I’m desperate for good sleep
Amazing RU-vid video Dr. Tara you have been such an instrument for my son after his TBI and stroke from a motorcycle wreck we have mini complex hurdles but doctors like you have come along side and made things so much easier to understand the nervous system as a whole and I think you
I watched this video the day it was released but apparently I didn’t leave a comment. Sleep is definitely an area I want to improve in at the 5-year mark since my stroke. Yes, my phone is the major culprit. But I also appreciate the technology (just need to manage it better). My wife brought my phone to me when I was in inpatient therapy & it played an important role in my recovery-listening to music (including when I would get awake overnight or in early morning) & reading daily readings in the Bible app, which I always called my Speech & Spiritual Therapy. My speech therapist even had my bring my phone to therapy sometimes. 😊 Thanks for your help with this important area! 🙏🏼
Hi Randy! Thanks for re-commenting 😊 I agree with you on the technology. It is definitely about finding balance :) Stay tuned for the next installment on this very important topic :)
I just had a stroke a few days ago. I’m in the hospital right now. The Dr asked if I snore and I wondered why she asked that. Now I know why. She advised me to call my primary care and ask for a sleep study. Excellent video. I plan on binge watching all of them. 😊
This video was very informative thank you so much when I was in the hospital they gave me a sleeping pill but now that I'm home I'm using your technique to get a decent amount of sleep thank you so much have a great day.
As requested I think that a follow-up video and more detail could go over damage and different areas of the brain and how it affects sleep. I do not know if that makes any sense or not, but if it does please share information with those thank you again
You really know your stuff. Very impressive presentation. As a registered polysomnographer (aka gloriified sleep technologist) this is such a good presentation that I would like to recommend to patients presenting for sleep studies. Now if only I could sleep better!!
Good talk. My post Encephalitis recovery has left me with unpredictable mental as well as physical fatigue.. needing frequent naps. Bad for my 'work' schedule. Deep breathing has helped my ability overcome distracting brain chatter.. helping me to fall asleep faster. Starting a meditation practice has helped with this. Lots of good info from experienced practitioners and professionals are on the web'.
Excellent video. So appreciate the background research, graphics, and analogies you use. Interestingly, I recently purchased a light box to help reset my circadian rhythm’s (early awakening). It resulted in worse insomnia☹️ 1. Do melatonin supplements also -> Neuro protective effects? 2. How can we naturally decrease excess cortisol (not disease related)? Thank you thank you thank you 😊
Oh no! Sorry to hear about the adverse response to the light box. The data is conflicting as to the benefits of a melatonin supplement. As far as cortisol, not sure but I will send you info if I come across it 😊
I hv suffered CVA and my left side is paralysed. It's been three years but i still cannot move my affected leg properly nor can I put much weight on it. I watch your vdo regularly and it encourages me. Is there any further hope for me?
Excellent video, completes the knowledge and recalling the facts, please a more detailed video that helps us to fall asleep faster and easier. Thanks, have a nice week.
That's so impressive explanation . Thank you so much Dr. TARA Tobias. I completely correlated all these minute VITAL information. I really appreciate your efforts to make people understand these difficult pathways and cascades. Very much simplified explanation. Heartily Thanks once again
Thanks for this video Dr. Tara. Very informative! I do hope my husband will be able to follow some recommendations when he is home. Did you recommend Dr. Wahls Protocol in one of your videos and what can a severe affected person can do in physio! Thank you so much! M❤️
I am so confused can i gain any knowledge, because i had surgery for severe cervical stenosis five months ago and have spinal cord damage foraminal stenosis atrophy of upper and lower body i can walk but have balance issues, anyway i see all these you tube sites on stroke rehab and brain recovery and thought the brain and the spinal cord were the same?
Sleep is a real problem for me I awaken easily and then it seems completely impossible to get back to sleep. Can I take sleep medication after a stroke?? I sleep in a dark room and all my electronic gadgets are in the other room, so I think I do most things right, eat early turn computer off at least 3hours before bed etc but my mind is a constantly moving freight train and I am worried I am harming myself with this lack of sleep.
Hi lance! Thanks for watching and for sharing. There is a ton of evidence that suggests cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia is very effective. You can google that and find many resources on this.
I tried trazadone but found iwas using as apain killer I quit using it for sleep and I was diagnosed with anklosing spondylitis which causes a whole lot of low back pain I get woken up by pain which is a real pain in the butt. I'm constantly tired I accept any suggestions.
Since my stroke, my bladder has shrunk to the size of a table tennis ball so I wake up typically 5 times during the night. I don’t reckon I’m asleep long enough to benefit from the most important sleep stage. Damn, I’m sunk.

A suggestion for having dreams sience I was involved in a car accident I have no dreams. The accident was in March and I was in coma for 65 days Today I have no dreams… I keep the device like phone with me in bed what do you think about this
Very interesting. The only thing I know is that dreams occur during REM sleep so either you are not spending any time in REM sleep or you maybe just can't remember them in the morning. But I will do some research on this because now I am curious about how a brain injury might effect dreams :) Stay tuned.
@@rehabhqofficial I’m also interested in this. I also noticed that with my stroke, I thought it was at least a few/several months before I started dreaming again. 🤷♂️
