Sleep Token "Sundowning" - ALBUM REVIEW 

Album of the year hands down Nobody can touch this band Love your review format btw birb, giving a little of a straight listen to the track in question and then having it continue in the background, simple but super effective, amazing video man Sugar & Higher are also my two standout favourites on the record Worship

My opinion on what each song is about in a few words each because this album is a love letter to a person with Alzheimer’s. The night does not...: it’s about Sundowning, if you don’t know what that neurological disorder is look it up. The offering: this song is about the deity and is about offering themselves completely to it Levitate: a love letter to the person with Alzheimer’s. “As you forget your words again” Dark signs: either finding out they had Alzheimer’s or the dark signs your ignore in a relationship. Higher: a person not ready for a relationship and giving up because all they’re doing is fighting. They’re looking for such different things. Take aim: I think this is about the pure innocence of the love a child spreads. Give: literally pleading a person to give you everything they can. Basically a love song Gods: a fuck you to Alzheimer’s it’s all so easy to just give up and let’s the gods take the person. Again it’s a love song with every emotion you can get from loss. This is anger basically. Sugar: obsession, lust, and denial. God this song is just so perfect. Idk about you but it feels like Vessel is drooling while singing. It’s so unnerving and almost assaulting, ugh I lust this song lol Say that you will: ooo this song hits me in the guts, my grandmother has Alzheimer’s and this song is all about making promises knowing they will never ever remember them. Drag me under: the person with Alzheimer’s is finally gone. With Alzheimer’s you know they are going to go, and you slowly just watch them fade into nothing and this song (I get how you wouldn’t like it but it’s my favorite song) it’s about having the depression pull you into it and be as comforting as it can be even though it’s suffocating. Blood sport: acceptance, every single emotion you would ever feel from loss, this song is fucking perfection. I’ve never heard anything so lyrically insightful and I regret not fighting harder to see them live when they were in the US. Sorry for the long ass post but I hope you find this insightful, and it opens a dialog with everyone here because I’d like to know what everyone else seems to think these songs are about. { W O R S H I P }

No exaggeration I've probably listened to this album start to finish nearly twenty times now. I think the album has a different impact on you when you read along with and really listen to the lyrics. I say keep listening, even to the ones you say are skippable, I thought the same thing about those songs at first too, but I bet they grow on you like they did with me. Sundowning is my favorite find of 2019 which is saying a lot because this year has been stacked with stellar releases.

LET me tell you, this album ended up in my top 3 of 2019. I love mellow music and slow downs with melody, and I enjoy it so much! I love the breakdowns in the background too! My favorite songs, especially the lyrics of “Dark Signs”, “Higher” and “Bloodsport” I read along with the lyrics and loved it! It is poetic. Wished you touched more of the lyrics, cause it was deep meaning behind it. Awesome review by the way. 🤘🏽

Higher is indeed a legend of a song. Those drums, though! Sugar is rad too, that breakdown is so points for style. Have fun with their live show, just saw them live and they're fuckin' amazing Oh and give Abandoned by Unprocessed a listen if you can, super unique and interesting music they're making!

I completely disagree about Take Aim but I think that's as much as anything because the lyrics punched me straight in the solar plexus and then proceeded to whale on me for the duration of the track. Other than that I agree wholeheartedly, stellar album. Standout track for me is probably either Dark Signs or Sugar but honestly the whole thing is fucking superb

Saw them live in Utah last weekend and holy shit am I confident that they are the best band you can see live right now. Performances are so good live, and vessels improv stuff that he does is so good. Please see them live

I love the reaction, other than me really liking Take Aim I really felt the same about all the songs. Crazy to see where they are now, they deserve it: found them through your reactions to them early last year, so thank you 🙏. Our musical tastes are so similar I almost use you as a way to find new bands at this point 😂. Just got back from Heart Support Fest and about 1/2 those bands I came to love from your channel. I know you are new to deftones - and honestly, the closest thing I have heard to Sleep Token is deftones and their softer, building side. Everyone praises their albums White Pony and Around the Fur first, but honestly, their albums Koi no Yokan, Saturday Night Wrist and Diamond Eyes have more of the experimental, shoegaze and pop oriented side on select tracks. (E.G. From KNY: Entombed, Rosemary, Tempest ; From DE : Sextape, Beauty School, 967-EVIL ; From SNW: Cherry Waves, Xerces, Riviere). I seriously highly recommend you listen to these albums or tracks in the Sleep Token mood, and you might hear the sound that overlaps with the Sleep Token sound.

Loved this band this year. One of the highlights all year. Agree about drag me under. But not about take aim and give. Give is my favourite song on the album. I love the lyrics. I love the mic of heaviness and mellow. Everyrhing is in it's right place theres so much nuisance in the music and the drumming,vocals and production are first class.

I'm just as addicted as you - agree with most of your takes. The Offering is still my top track - and I agree with your top picks - and would just add gods. Still, Jaws and Nazareth are special to me, and I still feel they are my favorite tracks from the band overall.

How dare you put Take Aim as passable? It has a deep meaning and a powerful ending chorus. "You led me on when the moment is perfect I will fire and forget till we both lay broken And you know I'll be yours Just want to be worth it I will run like the wind till you follow me again" The lyrical depth in this is phenomenal.

Agreed with a lot of this. Give was also a skippable track for me, mostly on a personal taste level. I also agree the pacing and cohesiveness of the album as a single piece of work was a little off in places. However, given that this is the band's first full length album, it is still a monumental piece of work IMO. Definitely my album of the year, and worth the wait. My biggest disagreement with you is on Drag Me Under. I was listening to it at work, and had to turn it off as it was making me tear up, so I am definitely glad it is on the album! I do have a sentimentalist side and emo streak to my personality so I think it appealed to those aspects of me. I also liked Take Aim, and found it very uplifting; it reminded me of some of my favourite Anime series, where the characters overcome unbearable loss, daunting challenges and horrific experiences to triumph in the end. In fact, I can imagine this track as the background to an Anime montage of these kinds of series. Thanks for the review anyway pal, and cheers from Sheffield, UK! Absolutely amazing record one of my favorite records of the year! My favorite track is probably Higher. I honestly think Sleep Token created their own genre. I'd call it Atmospheric Metal.

Amazing album, The Offering is still my favorite. I hope they do some drum playthrough videos! Edit: you know what, I really don't know if I can say i have a favorite song. It depends on my mood I guess.

The best album I've heard this year is Abigail Williams - Walk Beyond The Dark. I know others will disagree, but that's the great thing about music, everyone has a different taste and I can appreciate that.

I hear Deftones, Meshuggah and a bit of Cult of Luna in Sleep Token; but also much poppier bands, even more mellow The 1975 once or twice

I am literally obsessed with this band. I'm torn with really wanting to know who Vessel is and hoping I never find out. For my money, it's Jordan Hunt and the piano version of Blood Sport cements it for me.

Holding absence - here forever

As a drummer, I don't pay much attention to lyrical content so just like you said this album was very hit or miss with me. When they turn up I love it, when they slow it down I have to be in that mood to listen. 7/10 for me. I appreciate your review and I love your format for it. Hoping for a Thornhill album review! 🤟🏼

I’m _almost_ surprised that the lyrics aren’t being discussed far more commonly, but as he said; they’ve done an excellent job marketing this record. I think I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve heard people parrot what they’ve read (case in point; _“I believe the lyrics are talking about Sleep and(sic) the deity...”)_ There are surprisingly a lot of cases of people from around 30 onwards who suffer from some form of dementia, and this entire album simply sounds like a love letter to one of them. I know praying to an omnipotent being called Sleep sounds sexy, but that’s just part of the show kids. Remember when people didn’t know what any of the members of Slipknot looked like without a mask on?

One of the best albums of the year in my opinion. To me , even tho the slower tracks weren’t my favorite on the record it just shows their versatility as musicians, literally never heard a band with such a broad sound. They can go any direction they want from here and it will still sound like Sleep Token , they have created something very special and unique. I guarantee your gonna be hearing the word “ Worship” a lot more in the coming years 😉...wouldn’t want to have to play after these dudes on tour either !! The drummer alone would make you want to pack your shit and go home 😂😂

A great band (like great art) leaves so much to interpretation. Most of the songs make complete sense to me in light of looking thru the lens of narcissism. This is not a slight at all. Jaws is a perfect example of this. The band is insanely talented. The drummers skills are something to behold. The singer’s range and ability to invoke so much emotion in conjunction with the perfect ambience of the music grabs my soul. This is an amazing, incredible band.
