"Into the steaming hot water, boys! This lake isn't gonna salt itself!" Holy shit, the first time I watched this episode, that line had me laughing my ass off for about 15 minutes.
twist aside, i've started to find this movie really fascinating. think about it. it's about a boy who is forced to be female to appease his abusive and mentally unstable aunt, only shortly after he was traumatized watching his sister and father killed by a boating accident. Not only that, he was further affected seeing his father sleep with another man (which makes him sexually confused and unstable as heterosexual boys display attraction to him, believing he's female.) Then years later, the boy is pursued other boys' and older mens' unwanted sexual attention as well as unwanted attention from girls who bully him relentlessly for being weird and getting male attention, until he ends up murdering them. It's a combination of misogyny, sexuality, gender dysphoria, and peer abuse that causes Angela/Peter to become a slasher villain, but you completely understand and can even sympathize his reason for doing so.
Don't forget the constant awkward staring at Judy is because he's attracted to her and making Peter's peter hard (or would it be Angela's angela........ Angela's peter? Yep, Angela's peter, it even has a double meaning)
@Not Applicable A shockingly respectful comment and apt analysis. The youtube comments section is often terrifying to scroll down, especially when the complex issues of sexuality and gender identity are concerned, but I found an intelligent and thoughtful comment on a Brad Jones video. Thank you for adding good thoughts to a standing pool of awful ones?
HAISPAM Whaaaaaa....Thats really cool man. I do not live in the states so no wonder I did not get that reference. I just thought it was a random joke at how far the husband went to get away from that woman. And honestly I cannot blame him.
The actor who played Ricky said that he once went to one (via the audio comment) The socialisation between the peers in such an isolated place is accurate. Its all about survival.
Yes, between a pedocook, a worthless camp director and the worst kind of teens in earth, yes, it would've been a crapshoot camp even without a slayer on the loose.
To be fair, the end shot was done by a college student wearing a facecast of Felissa Rose, the actress who played Angela the rest of the movie, so it wasn't pre-teen dick. Most of the actors in this movie were much closer to the actual age of their characters than most teen movies nowadays (Felissa Rose was 13 and Jonathan Tiersten, Ricky's actor, was 17 but looks much younger in my opinion).
It's not that frozen, unhinged stare complete with a wide-open mouth, it's not those unearthly, feral snarls, it's not the fact that "she" has a penis... It's the fact that we're looking at someone who went through so much traumatizing shit that eventually made him\her snap and go on a killing spree. Between: witnessing his sister and father dying a sudden, heinous death, being raised by a lunatic who repressed his sexuality and forced him to live as not just any girl, his very deceased sister, having witnessed a man making out with another man, being bullied by a bunch of chickenshits and bitches complete with a creep trying to bang him\her and attracting a boy who clearly can't have a clue about what "she" really is, do you think Peter wouldn't have snapped any time soon?!
I was not a fan of horror/exploitation films until I started watching the Cinema Snob. Now I sit around all day making sarcastic remarks to strangers about the latest lucio Fulci movie I stumbled across. Thank you Brad Jones!
Y'know, it's not really the guys fault. His aunt forced him to become a woman, repressing him sexually for many years before so many painful memories kept flooding back in only a few days. Sure, they killed people, but if you wanna blame anyone for the murders, blame that screwed up aunt.
yeah the aunt is the real bad guy. i mean look what she did to this kid. though i wonder why his cousin never did anything? probably just as messed up as angela was. oh boy.
Every time I heard her speak I couldn't help but wonder if she was the "Fun In Balloon Land" parade commentator. Y'know where Brad kept going, "STOP FUCKING THE BALLOONS!" LOL
thought she was nuts when i watched it and see the start.. then Ionce you get to the end you realize she was a monster... that wasn't over the top acting it was just right, cause it shows just how much the aunt\mom is living in her own little world
Memorable Soundtrack to Sleepaway Camp. "Hey you guy holding the boom mic, can you come over here and sit on this keyboard for about 5 minutes after I press record."
Wow, it's really been five years? I remember when this review was hot and fresh. This video actually scared me back then. Angela's face at the end is genuinely unsettling. Let's see if I've grown a spine since then.
that face should be a meme... is EA ever gonna stop putting lootboxes in their games? [Angela Blank Stare]... is bethesda gonna get their act together and treat their fans right... [Angela Blank Stare]... is Hollywood/Disney gonna stop shoving sjw woke garbage crap in their films? [Angela Blank Stare]...Priceless:3
The movie is really cheesy and schlocky, but I remember that last shot of Angela's crazy face legitimately creeping me out the first time I saw this movie. It's just a wonderfully disturbing shot. Love it.
Oh my God! The Cinema Snob remembered this terrible movie and made a review of it! I thank "Robot Chicken" for initially informing me of this movie's existence
Totally agree. That face for some reason really freaked me and a friend out when we first watched this when we were both 21. I always have a random liking to this movie for freaking me out.
Ah yes, one of my favorite Cinema Snob reviews! The movie itself is kinda stupid but pretty enjoyable and the Snob's reaction to the twist at the end is a classic!
You gotta respect Ricky though; feisty little bastard will challenge a whole group of kids, all bigger than him, just to stick up for his cousin. He don't give a shit. Yet he only does it to stick up for Angela and not for himself; when it's just him, he cusses them out, but doesn't get violent. Mad props, because I don't think I was that ballsy at his age.
I love this movie! It's a great "deadly summer camp" movie. I love that "everyone got what they deserved". Especially the pervy, pedophile cook, Judy and Meg.
yes a hairy nude teenage girl sporting a boner, truely the worst nightmare hell has to offer lol i would suggest you don't go on a porn site under the futa/shemale tags lol
Just watched Sleepaway Camp for the first time. I saw this review when it first aired, so, unfortunately, I already knew the twist ending. But that didn't make it any less creepy. Seriously, my skin was crawling.
my god that face scares the shit out of me, credits to the actress who played Angela, moreover I don't want to know what the director did to get her to make said face.
Hiltzik (the movie's director) modeled a mask of Felissa Rose (Angela's actress) and made it wear to a guy who had to stand nude with his cock in full view at night...
It never ceases to amaze me how Snob's critique style has evolved over the years. Now he doesn't even pretend at being a snob. He reviews the movies as himself.
I just watched the documentary about this movie & it's hilarious that the actress who plays Angela's aunt did not want to play this character because of how "slanted" (in her words) her lines were meant to be delivered, the director pretty much told her she was gonna be in this movie if he had to mime her lines for her lmao
Another observation worth noting: Paul leaves Angela to be bullied by Judy one time, and Meg another time. Maybe that's why she/he ends up decapitating him?
The "Jersey Shore babies" line is extra hilarious given that the little boy at the beginning is the brother of Mike "The Situation" from Jersey Shore. (I haven't watched the whole video yet, sorry if he points that out in video).
People talk about the psychology of Angela/Peter, the aunt, the father, and even the pedophile cook, but here is a good question... What was up with the protective older cousin? He had to have been in on the secret, and that must've been why he was so protective! That's fucked up in it's own way, to have to keep that secret, just because your mom is absolutely crazy.
40 years old!!! This qualifies as the best entry in a string of abysmal sequels which kinda fascinated me I remember watching this back at my second house and found it pretty solid for a slasher film of the 1980s You can definitely see it's taking notes from 'Friday the 13th' Director Robert Hiltzik creates a level of childhood innocence while also creating a creepy atmosphere It works that you dont see the killer all the way Some of the attacks are so freaking brutal This camp really makes you feel uncomfortable around the adults, like it gets to a point where your questioning is everybody trying to a sexual predator? Yikes... The actress Felissa Rose who plays Angela is terrific and deeply unsettling with her cold, expressionless eyes And by the time it gets to that infamous ending wow....that's actually brilliant It's so freaky and sticks forever in your mind Many of the supporting characters do reach their breaking points trying to keep their composure during all these deaths True the film was met with a negative response at first and has been subject to controversy given the reveal at the end There's also some bad acting present with a slight cheesiness But the kills are creative and the child actors are decent Not to methion there's always a conversation going on about the effects of bullying and abuse of a child The psychological elements play a key factor too It also helps this holds a special place in the horror genre as far as the LGBTQIA community is concerned next to Dressed to Kill and Silence of the Lambs, so whatever the case is being divisive this ends up being 'Sleepaway Camp' is a low-budget horror flick not to be missed Sure it's problematic and familiar but stands out enough to leave an impression enough to inspire fan films even comedy sketches referencing it
This movie was the biggest fucking eye-roll all the way through, and then in the last few minutes it gets you with one of the best twists out there. It's probably the only reason we still talk about this movie.
1:53 for those curious, Sleepaway Camp was put out by UFDC (United Film Distribution Company), the same company that put out George Romero's Dawn of The Dead and Day of The Dead.
I have a soft spot for certain "so bad it's good" movies. This is one of those. I find the twist to be pretty clever. But I always wondered why the fact that the killer being a boy instead of a girl is somehow more terrifying than there being a killer in general. I get that the twist is jarring, but shouldn't we be more shocked by the fact that Angela is the killer rather than Angela being a boy?
It's been 30 years, and I'm STILL a little irritated with my cousin for spoiling the end of this movie for me--while we were in the video store looking for a slasher to rent. Since I knew the ending, I never got around to watching it. This is one of my favourite reviews, though!
Ah yes, the episode that got me into the series. I legit do remember being confused at first since I was looking for someone else but possibly that led me to the greatest internet heroes of my life.
His sister and father were killed in the beginning and his aunt who raised him wanted a girl so she picked out a girl's name for him and dressed him as a girl and treated him llike a girl.
Willy Kuskin, who plays one of the bullied campers, was genuinely bullied by the other kids during filming. Frank Trent Saladino, who played a camp counselor, had to step in when the other cast members took things too far Felissa Rose (Angela), Karen Fields (Judy), and Katherine Kamhi (Meg) were actually all quite close during filming. Katherine Kamhi said the scene where they throw Angela into the water was hard for her to shoot for that reason. This is Mike Kellin's final film. He was sick during filming, but did his best to conceal it. He died of lung cancer in August 1983, three months before the film's release. The film became an unexpected hit, and something of a cult favorite for horror movie buffs. It made 30 times more than what was spent on it. Jonathan Tiersten was given the role of Ricky after an unusual audition in which writer-director Robert Hiltzik asked Jonathan to curse him out. Felissa Rose's debut. Karen Fields's debut. Katherine Kamhi's debut. The climactic scene was accomplished using a nude man wearing a mask cast from Felissa Rose's face. The thin man who stood in for Angela was a college student who needed to get drunk before he was able to do the scene. Though originally uncredited, it has since been revealed that the identity of Angela's body double was Archie Liberace. It is his first and only screen credit. A shot of dead Judy was cut by the MPAA for being much too grisly. For Artie's severe burn sequence, the actor was propped up on a fake floor and underneath, liquid gelatin was pumped through the blisters giving the impression that they're pulsating. If you don't count the opening scene, or the scene where Artie barely survives being scalded, then the first victim in the body count doesn't die until 34 minutes into the film. There are clues hidden throughout the film that allude to Angela's real identity. For example, Angela refuses to swim in the lake with the other campers, and at one point, Judy asks why she always showers alone. Aunt Martha said, "Just be careful not to tell anyone how you got [your physical exam]." The paramedics who carry away Artie the cook were real-life paramedics from a nearby town. Rare is the slasher whose victims are almost all between twelve and fifteen. Also, a couple of people get attacked but not killed, which is also rare for a slasher. Felissa Rose said in an interview that she wore a bra designed to keep her breasts "flat as a board," though she joked that she was only 13, so there wasn't much to flatten. Felissa Rose does not speak her first line until 31 minutes into the film.
