Thank you Sez, My sheep didn't stand up for 3 days now, but she is eating, I feed her grains hoping to get her sugar level back to normal. I try to help her stand but it's just impossible, she is still pregnant I didn't induce... Sometimes she tries to get up but her head always ends up on her side... I have to help keep her head straight when I feed her... Do you think she can make it? She is eating but can't stand... And she is so heavy.

Do you mean she is lying on her side? No, I dont think she will, to be honest. Its a guess without seeing her and being her primary vet (ie a personal opinion, not a professional one), but if an animal is flat out on their side it's a terrible sign. Even just being down on her nerves for 3 days unable to stand, will take a big toll on the nerves. Also, in my experience, by the time they're at this stage, the placenta has usually shut down, so lambs may well be dead on the inside (ie induction probably wouldnt work anyway and would need a c-section). But c-section while she's in likely kidney failure is also a massive ask on the body. It's a gnarly disease towards the end :( IN SAYING THAT- without seeing her, I coudlnt say, I'm sorry. Your local vet should be able to do an exam of the nerves, brain function, blood sugar and livers/kidney function to give a good estimate of her chances of coming right. Good luck!

Does this also happen after a ewe gives birth? Like within a few days of lambing?

My sheep was doing well before the day she just suddenly cannot walk or stand up. It's almost a week already of her just laying down. She still eats a lot and drinks a lot too, but when we tried to support her to stand her legs are just bent and it does not seem that she was trying to move them. I don't know if she is pregnant or not. I hope you can tell me of a way to help her. We cannot afford having vet to check on her.

Oh dear :( Regardless of why she went down in the first place (I couldn't begin to guess, without examining her in person), if she has been down for a week and has no motor function in her legs she is very unlikely to be able to stand again, and would certainly still need treatment for the underlying cause of going down in the first place. So sorry to say, but if you can't get a vet out, the kindest thing to do is euthenase her :(

@@SeztheVet thank you so much for responding. I have been thinking very hard on what to decide. On whether I shall continue taking care of her or just let her rest and now I guess I don't have a choice. Maybe I was hiping for too much. Thank yoy for your advice🙂

@@akymazing007 I have a similar case, but she is clearly pregnant. What happened?
@akymazing007
@akymazing007 2 года назад
@@MobaCry unfortunately we had to put her down, which I think was the better choice, since her legs seemed to be already rotten and her chest are has accumulated fluids.

Hi Sez, can this happen, or a similar thing, once she's lambed? We have a girl who had triplets (one dead) in July and she's started getting skinny and walking around aimlessly and lying down a lot and not eating. We've given her electrolytes and have called the vet, but I remembered watching this episode and it made me wonder if it's sleepy sickness?
@SeztheVet
@SeztheVet 4 года назад
Hi Monique, yes absolutely it can. The proper term for Sleepy Sickness is pregnancy ketosis, but outside pregnancy it's just plain old Ketosis. Most likely this is from a state of inadequate food/starvation (especially if she is feeding triplets). If this is the case she is likely to be skinny, she will probably have a wool pluck (wool pulls out easilly in clumps, when. you give a tug), and will have very little, if any, milk to give. So make sure you keep an eye on those lambs as well, as they may not be getting a feed. Ketosis can also be secondary to any other condition that stops her eating, so good thing to get the vet out. But in the mean time, get that sugar in to her ASAP.. Your vet has probably been and gone now, hope it all went well.

@@SeztheVet thanks for you quick response Sez! Unfortunately we found her dead this morning 😢 we had called the vet, and we gave her electrolytes, but I think she was too far gone. Sucks big time 😢 this happened to us 2 years ago where 3 mum's died within a few months of each other and we'd spent so much $$$ on vet bills...there comes a time you just know when it's not going to help no matter what you do. I'm so glad I found your channel...it's been incredibly helpful and has me prepared for our last ewe due to lamb within the next few weeks. My 15 yr old son wants to become a vet, so I'm showing him your videos 😂 keep it up! And we'd love to see on on the details of what's happening in the body with ketosis 👍👍👍

I have a Scottish Blackface ewe who just lost 4 lambs. She had pregnancy toxemia which we caught in the early stage and treated. Now she just stands with her head over her water bucket. We have been supplementing her for many days as she has not been eating or drinking on her own. Is there anyway to get her to eat or drink?
@SeztheVet
@SeztheVet 2 года назад
Oh dear that doesn't sound good, does it :( the progression of pregnancy toxaemia leads them to kidney failure. It may be she has already progressed that far, in which case they usually need intensive care to pull theough. Good thing the lambs are already out. There could always be something else going on like an infected uterus. I would very surprised if she pulls through in her own. I would recommend a vet urgently

Sez the Vet Thank you for responding. We did everything possible to save her, but in the end she passed. It’s been very hard and I’m still tearing up as I write this. She’s now happily with her four lambs.
