I wanted to share how I took an inexpensive stock New Construction sliding glass patio door with outer flanges from a box store and replace an old aluminum door in my older Texas home with brick exterior and a slab foundation. Most homes are built that way in the southern US, and I only saw videos showing how to install them in new homes or replace in homes with wood exterior siding and a wood framed subfloor. The manufacturer of my new door (Jeld Wen) did not include instructions for my application. I did quite a bit of research and found out how the pros do it (but they keep it secret).

I can't thank you enough for taking the time to film this install. I have sweated what was involved in replacing not 1 for 4 sliding doors on my house. I was told by the local carpenter that he had to have someone that dealt with brick to remove my doors, but after seeing this I feel it's possible to DIY. You did a great job on this tutorial and again, thanks a million for your time.

Chris, can’t tell you how much this video is helping me prepare for my new door. Exactly same situation with the brick, and the existing door is original to the house so it’s really tight against the brick. I will have to cut the nailing flange off of the new door like you did. Your video was the only one I could find showing the best way to do that. Thanks!

You replaced an old door exactly like the one I am about to replace with a new Reliabilt from Lowes, similar to your Jeld-Wen. I will need to cut back a couple of inches of floor tile just as you did for the wider footprint. You did an excellent job showing how this project is done. Man, I hope I can get mine done as well as you did. Awesome video!!!

You almost knocked down the brick wall on the right😳 You could of used the saw-sawl to cut that aluminum piece. Other than that, you did an amazing job!!!!💪🏼🤙🏼 Looks like you’re very patient and determined. I’m a GC here in South Fla. And the guys I hire are cavemen!!! They destroy everything during demolition!!!!!

Being a 42 tr mason.That was a great cut with grinder.Just from looking,it appears you could have clamp a 1×2 against door an followed the edge of 1×2.Great job!!

Thanks for your video. Very informative. You indicate 72x80 rough opening. Could you say what your brick-to-brick width measure was? And why you chose the model door you installed? Your original door looks like mine. Planning to do something similar. Also in Texas with slab and brick veneer. FYI, my brick-to-brick distance 70.5 inches.

This is an amazing video. So detailed as no other that I saw about this project. I need to do this kind of job but I was a little bit scared because my house also uses brick from outside.\ After watching this video I got more encouraged to do my project. Is the last piece installed at the top Sheetrock or wood? Thanks for your great video.

Thanks! It was painted pine 1x material (3/4" actual thickness) on the inside. Outside was wood siding that I put back from before.

Brilliant presentation, helpful hints and just an amazing job sharing this wonderfully helpful information. Thanks so much!! Only question I have is if this voids any warranty from JELD-WEN? I assume yes, secondary to the fact that they don't have any instruction to do so included in the directions? However if the professionals use this method how do they get around this issue?

Thank you for the kind words. I'm not sure about the warranty, but don't know how else someone would install the door on a remodel without removing the brick veneer. I would imagine that they would stand behind the mechanical items like the rollers and the seals, but they would have a legitimate case for denying a claim if the door was installed poorly, for instance if there's uneven pressure from different screws creating a wavy surface on the sides, not creating a flat and level track base, or not installing it plumb.

There should be two L shaped brackets securing the active panel to the top and bottom of the door. If you remove the screws on either side of the brackets you can slip a small flat bar between the frame and the panel and pry it from the side of the frame until it’s able to lift and tilt out. Twisting the panel trying to pry the frame loose is a good way to pop the glass and create a hazardous situation.
