Slim Prospects, Harsh Realities: Asia’s Youth Employment Crisis | CNA Correspondent

Asia is the fastest growing economic region. But its youth are struggling with a jobs crisis. Unemployment rates are significantly higher for them, while those who have jobs are often unhappy and overworked.
In Malaysia, a lack of opportunities and a weakening currency are driving many of its bright young talents across the Causeway to neighbouring Singapore. The exodus is worsening its labour crunch, especially in the state of Johor. In highly educated and hyper-competitive South Korea, college graduates are fighting over a shrinking pool of well-paid positions, by taking more courses and exams. Many fail to secure a job after a year, even with a master’s degree and multiple internships under their belt. In Japan, long hours and a lack of work-life balance remain the norm. But a post-pandemic reset and shifting attitudes among the younger generation are slowly driving change.
We look at how the employment crisis is impacting Asia’s youth in this week’s episode of CNA Correspondent.
0:00 Introduction
00:37 Malaysia’s brain drain: '40-55% want to work overseas'
09:30 South Korea’s jobseekers: 'Everything needs to be top-notch'
14:02 Japan’s work culture: 'I am tired, this is how it is'

why difficult to look for a suitable job in Malaysia? 1) Age restriction, most companies dont want someone aged 35 or older. or younger ones without experience 2) salary vs what companies want you to do or ur qualifications 3) toxic managers or workers demand alot of things but never comes to work 4) incompetent Managers, expect someone just joined the company knows what need to do without giving them proper guidance. 5) require all sorts of qualifications even for minor/ easy work 6) managers sets absurd targets for sales team even when they barely achieving the previous target Ive worked in many places, i can survive overseas, but not Malaysia

Due to over population in the entire world, the rules of society just keeps getting worst. It’s a downward spiral for each new generation. (Imagine how climate change makes things worse due to human over population greed). These beliefs have failed me economically in life and now I have paid a big penalty for these decisions I made more than 26 years ago. 1): Health is first. Exercise takes priority over “over-time” or “dedication” 2): Don’t have children. Having no steady relationship is even better. It saved me lots of money during my early twenties 3): Companies don’t respect your boundaries. Make sure at least you respect them and enforce them, regardless of consequences 4): Lower expectations, live a simple life and say *#$#$& you to society’s expectations If I didn’t follow the above rules, I might have a “secure” life but I probably be dead with diabetes, heart attack or something bad

Can someone explain why it's considered a problem when youth unemployment is high, even though overall unemployment rates are low? Typically, low unemployment suggests a healthy economy, so the job opportunities are clearly there. In the past, while youth unemployment might have been low, the overall job market was tough, and unemployment was high, with many people struggling to find work. Some even had to resort to child labor just to make ends meet. Was that really a better situation? High youth unemployment while the overall unemployment rate is low could also mean that some young people are in the job market but aren't actively seeking jobs because their families provide financial support. So, they can afford to be picky about the jobs they choose. Also, because of high minimum wages, expecting companies to pay high wages to inexperienced young workers who might not contribute much seems unrealistic, doesn't it? If this is really a problem, then the government should lower the barrier to entry for the youth. Give incentives to companies to hire young workers instead of experienced ones. Either lower the minimum wages or share the wages by subsidizing the first-year salary or offering tax cuts. Personally, I see this as a good indicator rather than a bad one. I think it's positive that young people have the luxury of being selective about their job choices, thanks to a healthy economy. With sufficient time and resources, they can explore different opportunities, perhaps even starting their own ventures

The last thing I will do is to support local businesses. Local businesses should be open to fierce competition with the rest of the world. If they need support from locals to stay afloat. Best to shut down the business now.

a mnc's hiring manager accidentally forwarded me an email of his exchanges with headhunter. He mentioned he's interested in hiring me in Msia despite 40+% bump because my salary was cheap. It felt a bit of an insult, but that's the reality. 8 years later, I am amongst top single digit earners in Singapore. Thanks LKY, SG.

there's probably a shortage of physical labours as well around the world as youths are becoming more and more educated. I think blue collars now are the way to go to earn money instead of white collars because we have too many white collars around and not enough blue collars. If I were a student now again I would pick being a blue collar for sure.

One thing I noticed when hiring for contractors now, for those 21 to 25, they want money but they don’t want to do face to face interviews and they rather do avatars based online interviews. Many companies doesn’t allow avatars based online interviews but rather to see the face of the interviewee.

Indonesia jobs market: - Diploma must below 25 years old with 1-2 years working experience (minimum) - All-in-one roles (they wanted you like Aang from the Avatar, can master everything) - Paid below national standard wages (you're the Avatar but they wanted to paid you less, even free in the name of "experience") - minimum 50 hours/week - The boomer want you to solved their problem (i'm not kidding) ps: This is the qualification for Junior or Entry level for 80% (or even more) Indonesia jobs market. pps: Thats why almost all of my friends are working overseas. And the one working here are either as State Civil Service (ASN) or BUMN. Only 1 -3 people that change their life to small business owner. ppps: Indonesia jobs market are like they wanted you to be The Avatar and paid you less in the name of "gaining experience".

If I am a Malaysian, I would come to Singapore to work as well. Sure the money is great (exchange rate of 1:3.5), but culturally, there is no difference between a Malaysian and Singaporean. We pretty much are the same. Malaysians also have CPF in Singapore so the JB Labour minster's comment is pretty moot, I think.

Well definitely in Asia there is a youth employment crisis. This is some of the reason why young Chinese another ethnicity are desperately trying to enter the US from the southern border. The US still is offering better opportunities for anyone who make it. Young Asians are making these sacrifice in hoping to find prosperity in America.

I wonder if there's a correlation between the rise of mobile social media platforms and youth unemployment? I see that anyone under 35yo, they are always glued to their phones even at work. While it may take 20 seconds to check, but if they do that every five minutes, and half the time, they post or respond to someone, that's 2-3mins right there. That eventually means they are not productive up to 1/3 of the time... and that doesn't even factor in starting and restarting, which is also inefficient.

Take it from me, a 26 yr old filipino who is always glued to my phone up to this day but got a good-paying job as an accountant for an AUS firm. The big problem is the local companies. Local companies tend to be more demanding on performance but never equates it with right compensation

meh, im not singaporean so im not entitled to an actual opinion. but all i see is a bunch of adults trying to convince themselves that these youths aren't just going to get betrayed later on as the government/corporations then hires more foreign or non-singaporean cheap labor for the jobs that the youths don't want to do, but also strangely, these jobs are also the jobs these bunch of adults in these news videos, also don't want to do. so maybe that explains the unemployment rate. the problem maybe isn't the rate, the problem is our interpretations or understandings of it, and your limited, baby boomer dominant perspective as a news source.
