Hi, this is from the SlimQ team. First of all, a big thank you for this independent review, very clear and enjoyable to watch. We had a few colleagues subscribe to this channel because it has a lot of information specifically about chargers. Just want to pitch in a few quick comments as FYI 1. The design goal of the SlimQ 150W and 240W charger is to get smaller, lighter, and more ports for multiple devices and mostly for gaming laptops and ultrabook laptops and overall more user-friendly, that's why it has round barrel port and a whole bunch of customized adapters (separate) for different laptops. From this perspective, we believe both SlimQ 150W and 240W fulfilled the promises (still have room to optimize though). 2. The UK and other adapters are specifically re-designed according to safety requirements. There are attach-on adapters on the market but not exactly meet the safety distance requirement among components. We are confident ours may probably be the only ones that can meet the safety requirement, not just electronically but also mechanically. These adapters are _not_ general-purpose adapters and are only meant to be used on SlimQ chargers (they are clip-ons and not compatible with other brand chargers) and each SlimQ charger has a fuse inside and is directly connected to the international adapters. This is the same thing as the adapter itself having a fuse from safety checking perspective 3. AC cable is only used for SlimQ chargers that are 240W or below so the max current is 2.4A in a country like Japan and about ~1A in like European countries. 4. We didn't hear complaints about the low voltage on USB C ports, so far, but it's a thing we need to keep eye on for sure. This is a tradeoff in design to output 20V on the DC (without lost) and 20V on USB C (with lost) at the same time. 6. There is a teardown report on the 150W (in Chinese, but you can use Google translate to have a pretty accurate translation): www.chongdiantou.com/archives/128796.html Hopefully I didn't miss anything I want to add. Again, thank you for the video, and really appreciate the effort.

Thank you for the detailed comment, this means a lot, and seeing the response is awesome! First, you are making some very interesting (in a good way) devices. These check a lot of the boxes for things people want... Actually, the USB extender thing is something I want to talk to you about. So, for the comments: 1, that is a good goal within limits, some power adapters I've looked at put 200w in the box but can't handle the heat (your device shuts down safely during overload though), the barrel plug is great, it is the only way to get the power out right now!, 2, the UK adapter requires a fuse in the plug, BS1363, since you have an extension lead this is non-compliant since the fuse is to protect the wire between the adapter and the wall. The fuse in the device is moot. 3, Yes, current is within tolerance of the wire, but it has to be able to handle a fault condition, I know it seems over engineered to do this but it is something to look at. 4, I agree 100%, you would have to ride the voltage high on the barrel plug to get the USB port to be in tolerance or use a buck-boost circuit adding two additional mosfets per output and a more complicated control circuit. The trade off is whether the expense is worth it or not. 5, there is no 5!, 6, thanks! Should I do a teardown myself? Again, the detailed response is awesome, keep up the good work, and I really HOPE you add the safety listing!

@@AllThingsOnePlace Thanks and sorry for missing 5 :) Regarding 2, I could be wrong and need to double-check with engineers from the certified lab, but I believe they treat the UK adapter as part of the charger. I remember we have to change the whole design of the adapter and add a lock mechanism so it won't fall off or break in a drop test that the charger has to pass. The lock has to be tough enough which also makes it a bit hard to unlock and take off (This is not an overlooked bug, but rather a design trade-off between user experience and compliance requirement). Exactly what you said about 4, also a design trade-off. To explain more how we strike the balance, most of the existing round barrel laptop adapters output 19.5v, although it is ok for our chargers to output between 18.5-20.5V (within the 5% range), it's better to be as close to 19.5v as possible, you never know if there is a laptop out there that is more sensitive than others to power voltage. The current DC output we set is 20.2V which is a bit higher than 20V. The DC cable would add a bit of resistance so, at the cable end, it should be roughly 20V or less which is acceptable for most 19.5V laptops. The type-c output should have more than 19.5V (given the 20.2V input) most of the time if a good (and short) cable is used for the device.

@@AllThingsOnePlace Forgot about the safety listing thing. As far as I know, only FCC is required to sell in North America. We do have FCC on the box and products. I guess you expect to see UL/ETL on the box? The reality is, most online platforms like Amazon also require UL 62368-1 test reports from a certified lab. Most offline retailers require UL or ETL full certificates. The problem with UL or ETL full certificates for this kind of product is not only the cost but also the time it requires. Also, if anything inside changes, even a transistor is changed, a do-over is needed. This makes it impossible for charger products like ours to get full certificates and keep innovating at the same time. Chargers like SlimQ 150W/240W are more complex than traditional laptop adapters and need to take advantage of new components, have bug fixes or optimize algorithms. Having the 62368-1 test is basically the same thing as UL/ETL (which also have the 62368-1 as core) just does not require the full process and is much faster (2-4 weeks normally) and much cheaper. We only sell online so we only do the 62368-1 test and submit reports to Amazon as required. As long as we stick to the test standards, the products are as safe as fully certified. On a side note, from my personal observation, a big change is happening in power supply technology and applications. There are new components, new controllers, and even new software standards such as USB C specs. It is hard to be fully certified while keep introducing changes.

I had started to fill out the payment form for the 240 when I realised I hadn't really checked for proper reviews. Very happy I did and stumbled upon yours. Too bad the the review didn't feel too encouraging. I guess I'll keep the literal brick of a PSU at home for gaming and use one of my apple chargers for USB charging on my laptop (good thing it can do either, hehe). Thank you for your work and sharing your thoughts! I had to subscribe after this :)

Thanks! Yeah, it is a good power supply and the company does defend itself in the comments again the lack of safety listing, citing cost is too high but it doesn't change the fact that there is no official safety listing.

What a detailed test! I am a laptop user who just switched from Lenovo to ASUS. ASUS has paired its tiny 14-inch notebook with a stupid 240W charger that weighs 700g, almost 40% of the weight of the notebook. SlimQ is the only vendor I can find on Amazon that provide solutions. In my opinion, providing 2 C ports is a bit redundant. It can completely provide only 1 C port, even if it is only 65W level. At the same time, more redundancy is provided to meet the output, heat dissipation, and stability of the DC port. There are also many reviews on Amazon stating that this product has overheated and external deformation. This is why I haven’t placed an order yet.

Yeah, it's a lot of watts in a small case... even at 90% efficiency, that's 24 watts of heat it has to get out of the case, with no fan, or external metal heatsinking.

I travel quite a bit in my car and have to charge a 700wh battery pack quite often. I got their 150W and 330W charger and ive been pretty happy with it. I think theyre the smallest in the market for the output they can do. The 150W i had just died out of the blue and i contacted SlimQ. They shipped a brand new one to me the next day with no questions asked. Tbh i was kinda surprised with how quick and easy the warranty claim was. Anyway I opened up the dead charger when i got the replacement in a couple days and i suspect one of the capacitor died. It didnt blow but it looked like there were slight burn marks on one of four caps. Other than that, with both the 150 and 330 ive been really happy. Makes life easier not having to carry so many different bricks.

Did you encounter any problems with your 330w charger? Mine refuses to go above a threshold of 250w, and my devices plugged into the USB C ports stop functioning when this threshold is reached (game at performance mode consumes roughly 150 to 200w I reckon)

In the UK we don’t require a fuse if the thing is double insulated 😊
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
Yeah, is an extension cord double insulated with an open (non-shuttered) plug on the other end? I guess if you clip onto the adapter you can say it's almost okay. But the BS 1363 standard seems clear enough on fuse specifically for the reason identified here, that wire can't take 32 amps... but I don't live in the UK so no idea what is considered 'generally excepted' just going off standard info, yes old versions say recommended. For SlimQ, they print the little box in a box for double insulated but yeah leaning on whatever is in the product to protect you with no listing, means they can shove any component anytime into any of these spots, no verification required... The 3rd party verification of safety is a pain for sure and it is expensive if you are selling a small volume product. In this case a few pennies more per adapter sold would easily cover the cost... and this isn't some race to the bottom product.

Primarily interested in the 240W charger. I'd be interested in using this as a portable charger and the stock charger as a permanent one at home given that its more compact, so idle power consumption wouldn't be an issue since i would be paying for the electricity when I'm using it. Using a 100w c charger would be more compact, but if I'm worried about damage to my laptop due to out of spec voltages then I'm not sure it'd be that much of a problem. The laptop I'm getting doesn't allow direct DC power theough thr C port, so it'd constantly be charging the battery (putting wear on it instead). So if im only using the 240w on the go, then the slightly oos voltages might be a worthy tradeoff since its only some of the time. I am still hesitant though to get this product after your review. I wish you did a teardown of these to look at the quality. And the comments on the cable make me feel like I'd be getting a premium product with an unpremium cable. I'd be interested in other Gan 240w laptop chargers, but this is the only one I can find.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
Yeah, teardown of the 240W needs to happen. I am curious if they've cut any corners. In general the voltage being low is a side effect of the design, SlimQ commented on this actually, and the safety listing testing... So, it really should be in specification but a teardown will reveal more.

Thank you to the creator of this video and to Slim Q for replying. I understood only about 20% of the technical explanation. All I care about is... 1. Can I save a great deal of bulk and weight from the power charger and cable that comes with my laptop (brand and purchase pending)? 2. Can I safely use this product in Canada and most of Asia (Japan, Turkey, Thailand, India etc), without damaging the computer or causing a fire? 3. Will using it void my manufacturer's warranty? 4. Will the laptop be damaged in any way using an unauthorized part? If the adapters are not electrical standards-compliant wouldn't it make more sense to use just the plain original and a dedicated adapter (although that adds bulk and in my experience the more doodads I add the more likelihood of problems). Does this device also have a surge protector? Adding on such adds a great deal to my travel luggage. I have damaged several phones using ungrounded electrical outlets in several countrues. And lastly, what are the pros and cons of SlimQ's competitors? I will watch the other videos to get your take.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
Yeah, I think SlimQ makes good note that they accomplish 1. 2 is hit or miss. 3. I've never heard of a manufacturer voiding warrantee for using an alternate power adapter, if they do stuff like that, then the entire alternate power adapter market should not exist? 4. That's kind of what I am showing, voltage and current to the limit the adapter can supply. In terms of protection on the input side, power adapters are all over the place. Ground doesn't really help, most of these usb adapters, including these, are completely ungrounded. But voltage surges can be a real problem. Part of the safety listing is making sure these devices can either survive or protect against these conditions.

Do you think you could test the Pine64 Pinepower Desktop 120W charger and also the Pinepower travel charger PD65W? The interesting thing about the Pinepower desktop is that it comes with a 3-pin Cord with earth grounding, They also took community feed back about the USB shields. All the front USB metal shields have continuity to each other and also continuity to the ground pin on the cord which means they are all earth ground. This is important if you are using sensitive electronic devices with your USB charger. Pinecil soldering iron is one of those sensitive devices (yes you could just run ground cable from the GND screw on Pinecil to good ground but who wants 2 cables dangling off their soldering iron?) I ordered the 2 baseus USB-C chargers that also come with a 3-pin grounded cord, but they were both disappointing. the 3-pin cord ground was only connected to the ground pin on the additional AC outlets on the cord. the USB shields iir had continuity to each other but no connection to the earth pin or ground pin on the 3- pin Cord. Why they skipped that final and important step I have no idea. I returned the baseus chargers for this reason.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
They shouldn't be earth ground directly... They should be static dissipative though, so some resistance (1meg ohm) in the connection, I haven't looked at schematics but this is probably correct. See treadmill shocking video on my channel somewhere... that is probably super low quality that was a long time ago, no idea what's in that video probably riddled with mistakes, anyway all about ground and static dissipation or it should be. I want to do a video on this topic you are talking about very much. I think it is important. I got an email on an offer for the soldering iron, I need to reply to that still... and what an opportunity to mix it in with some chargers! I have some test kits to assembly live with the iron. The question is the when and where these chargers are available and do they do earthing safely? Yes, the AC ground is very rarely linked to the other side. This is on purpose. In some cases an adapter will have a high value resistor linking the two sides, sometimes in medical grade supplies you will see this often made with multiple resistors and a protection network for that. I have earth links on my bench but the straps I use have 1 megaohm resistors in them so they are not actually linking you to ground. The plug points are directly connected to earth though. The resistance is a safety features, plenty to dissipate static safely so you can work, solder, etc. but not enough to hurt you should you encounter some live wires. Or, solder circuits live, hahaha.

What is the advantage / use case of the barrel plug? Enjoy your videos a lot.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
The barrel plug is a lower resistance connection versus a USB C cable. It can therefore carry more current and has lower losses. Unlike USB C this allows the power level to go up without losing too much power to heat. The newer USB specification allows for higher voltages but caps the current at 5 amps still, so you can get the watts but you keep efficiency and heat low but keeping the current lower. This requires more electronics in the connected device though, so the Barrel connector wins by being more simple. There are limitations of course... The barrel plugs from SlimQ did get warm during testing.
@adiands850
@adiands850 Год назад
a potential use case for the barrel plug would be to power a Thunderbolt 4 dock (and provide pass-through power to charge the laptop). Most TB4 docks seem to use barrel plugs and come with very large power bricks that are usually much larger than the dock itself.

It doesn't look like anyone else makes adapters quite like these. The next alternative is to use the OEM adapter and a separate USB C adapter. Xiaomi is going to be a different protocol... so that probably won't work with PD, at least not at max speed. Gaming laptops are all over the place but many do need dedicated power bricks still because they use so much power. In terms of a Samsung device with super fast charging, basically make sure the charger supports PPS and 5 amps on the output and you have a 5 amp capable cable (typically called 100W E mark cables). I think the point of these SlimQ adpaters is to provide enough power to a gaming laptop directly and also be able to power a USB device or two on the side.

@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah, it is a work in progress for sure. For a phone, it typically starts out at higher watts, then drops over time, so average is good for the charge time. This assumes the adapter is being fully used at some point. If you use a 100 watt adapter to charge a phone that can charge at 30W, this will over-estimate since the value on the site is average of the charger not what is plugged in (no real way to know that). In this case now, you would derate the time to compensate. So, pick the average time based on (watts into device/power capability)*total charging time = time to put into calculator. I will add a note about adding a custom power level. If you leave the charger plugged in all the time slide the idle bar to fill the remaining time.

The larger adapters are better since they can share power more evenly. Like the Wotobeus or UGREEN 200W. These SlimQ adapters are interesting in that they do not renegotiate on plug/unplug so they operate independently but these don't have the high current PPS capability for Samsung devices. SlimQ sells a little extender thing I want to cover separately that does have two USB A and two USB C ports. A 100W charger will do this all as well, but it just won't hit the higher power modes on all devices at once. There will be a parade of negotiation as it figures out which one gets more power.

The Original Adapter is only 120W, I am going to use a 5700G APU + 64 GB of Ram and also 2 nvme SSDs the 120W won t be enough especially when I want to overclock . Im useing small fans and an improved heatpad (18 W/mk) on the VRMs. Also I am useing liquid metal and direct die cooling on the CPU. I am looking for a 19,5V and 200W< + powersupply which delivers clean power without much ripple. Do you think the slimq 240W is a good choice? Can you suggest something better? Would the UK plug be safer if you were to use the extension and just rewire the US plug to a UK plug with fuse?
@AllThingsOnePlace

Yes, with a correctly rated fuse, that is he way this should have been done in the first place. So, obviously 13A is too much for a device like this but a 3A or 5A fuse is reasonable.

@@eduardoPicazzo I'm not sure, I'm sure some corners are cut to keep the price down, like not enough LED's pushed to hard so they get too hot. In general they don't have isolated power supplies which is fine, but the quality of those supplies varies greatly. Some use capacitive droppers, some use buck supplies, and some use power factor corrected buck supplies (Philips, Osram, GE, etc.) The dropping of LED lighting from energy star is going to reduce the general quality in the long run too. The 240W SlimQ does provide the correct voltage and current, it sounds like you just need the correct adapter cable to be able to plug it in. SlimQ has a ton of options for this adapter on their webpage. They tend to be responsive if you ask them something so I'd ask them which one is compatible.
