Donnie Steele performed all lead guitars. He quit in February of '96 after the recording and was replaced by Craig Jones, who later switched to samples then was fully replaced by Mick Thomson.
The MFKR recording line-up conceived of
Anders - vocals, tribal percussion
Paul - bass, back-up vocals
Shawn - percussion, back-up vocals
Josh - guitar, back-up vocals
Donnie - lead guitar
Joey - main drumkit
After the recording the line-up was
Anders - vocals, tribal percussion
Paul - bass, back-up vocals
Shawn - percussion, back-up vocals
Josh - guitar, back-up vocals
Mick - lead guitar
Joey - main drumkit
Craig - Samples
On July 18th, Andrew Rouw, also known as "Anders Colsefni" departed from "VGT"

I wouldn't say this version of Gently is better than the Iowa version or vice versa. Both versions of the song are unique and beautifully malevolent in their own way.

This one is more dark and sad, Iowa's one seems more angry. I think they're both brilliant, but the whole of MFKR seems like the lead singer is caving in under the weight of his own despair, while IOWA does the opposite, having the lead snap and project all of his anger onto an uncaring world.

Both are amazing. It seems like this one sounds more like depression, where the Iowa version sounds more angry. They suit their individual albums.

Wow.. almost two decades after this was one of my favorite songs to play on guitar, I come to youtube and find that many people out there are still discovering it today. Back then Donnie Steele was giving me guitar lessons. The guy is the most humble man you'll ever meet. When I started taking lessons he never mentioned a thing about having been in Slipknot. I didn't know he was in it until one day I read the credits section of a website dedicated to the MFKR album. I remember asking him about it ("Were you in Slipknot?") and I'll never forget how much it was not a big deal to him -- he basically said, "Yes. Did you practice your scales?" I begged him for weeks to teach me this song. I always told him how great it was, and he would counter with, "if you think THAT'S great, check out this Black Sabbath/Pantera/Megadeth song I brought to teach you." He genuinely regarded this song as no big deal, though I always thought of it (and still do think of it) as a masterpiece. He eventually did teach it to me and I have his handwritten guitar tabs somewhere. But he never acted like it was a big deal that he wrote it, and was more interested in his current music with Killpact, etc. All of the people here saying they hear "Metallica", you are correct. They were a big influence on Donnie's music. He was/is a traditional "metal" guitarist, through and through. Years ago, long after I stopped taking lessons and moved away, I needed a musician for my wedding and looked up Donnie on Google.. only to find that he had stepped in to play bass for Slipknot. I figured he probably didn't have time for something like wedding duty. Lol. However I can guarantee you if I would have contacted him, he would have done it with pleasure -- one of the best guys you'll ever meet. Loved Mountain Dew, his Jeep Cherokee, and his family. If I forgot to give him his $10 for the week, no big deal -- "hit me next week" he would always say. Donnie could make any guitar sound beautiful but I'd bet if you asked him for a suggestion, he'd tell you to pick up an Ibanez. If I saw Donnie today somewhere, I can promise you the first thing he'd ask me is, "have you been practicing your scales?" Donnie if you are out there buddy I just want to say I'm proud of you and hope all is well. You used to tell me I played guitar like Marty Friedman which is hilarious because I'd consider myself more of a Robert Wilson.

Verse 1 (Anders) Gently, my mind escapes into the relaxing mode of pleasure A pleasure that will take my mind off of the realities of my life My past life. Life as I know it now And whatever may come, it slowly disappears To somewhere in the back of my mind - it will remain there 'til I wish to retrieve it [Verse 2] (Anders) Yes, I will stay here for awhile, for I need the break A break from the pressures of life And everything that lay in the palm of life's hands Life's hands This mode is incredible. It's out of this world Too bad I must always leave it. Oh, but that's life. (That's life.) [Outro] (Anders And Clown) That's life. (That's life.) That's life. (That's life.) That's life. growls. And no. There is a reason Slipknot is successful now and struggled back then. Corey and Jim Root saved the band. Anders was good but it sounded a lot like a Pantera cover band ( Maybe that is why some people love Anders his vocals more). But Corey gave Slipknot a new sound that no one heard at that time. Say what you want about Corey Taylor but he brought energy to the band. Again not saying Anders sucks (In fact I would trade most of the emo core bullshit for someone with his talent). He just didn't do anything big with the band. Tbh they wouldn't even be making music if it weren't for the right moves they made by getting a new vocalist.

It really puts you in a relaxing mode of pleasure before it drags you outta that state of comfort with the harder hitting parts of the track. idk for some reason I like this version better than iowa's, that doesnt mean I hate iowa's gently, I like both, I just love ander's vocals on this, I can only describe this song as grimey for some reason, that heavy, chunky distorted guitar, ander's distinct vocals just go well with this track.

James Baird its like the band All Shall Perish between the albums Awaken The Dreamers and The Price of Existence. Their earlier work was more melodic metal and beatdown while their last album was more gut wretching brutal death metal pig squeals and speed drumming. They were both equally enjoyable. If a band keeps the same sound and dont take risks and never step out of bounds then they're limiting their own creative growth and will always sound the same.

I wish we could just end all of these arguments about Slipknot, about what it is and isn't...and so forth. I've been listening to Slipknot since I was in the 6th grade, I am now 26 years old. We all have our reasons for loving or hating Slipknot. For me, I had a particular image of what I thought Slipknot was...as I'm sure you guys did too. I happened to love 'M.F.K.R.', 'Slipknot' and 'Iowa' the most. I did somewhat like 'Vol.3' as well. Yet at the time of it's release, my mind was still stuck on 'Iowa'...as if it were a state of mind. I felt like after 'M.F.K.R.' they really started to focus on developing that atmosphere you speak of. 'Iowa' is where it all came together, I think. I can remember listening to that album almost every night on some headphones before I fell asleep. Could hear all the samples they put into it and everything. And really appreciate that dark landscape they created. People can call it hipster or whatever...but I like both versions as equal, yet separate. I still love this version because I really liked Anders' vocals...mostly his growls though. I commented earlier about this, but I absolutely love from 3:50 on in this song. The way Anders did it here, is something the 'Iowa' version honestly doesn't have...it just feels different. And that's not a bad thing either. I'm also tired of people saying shit like,"This is the real Slipknot!!!11"...stuff like that. It's all Slipknot. Even the parts that we may not particular love.

I hate it that we're accused of being hipster for prefering this over Iowa. Honestly, this is really good and original, far more abbrasive than what slipknot are now and that's probably why it's hated. I like a lot of later slipknot but this is one where I think they did a better job.
