The second from the left is Paul Gray. He was the bass player for Slipknot from 1994 to 2008. He died in 2010 to an overdose on a cocktail of powerful drugs. There are many Slipknot songs that either mention Paul, or are entirely about him. The song Goodbye that I have been suggesting is a Goodbye to Paul. The song Skeptic is about Paul. The man was a great friend to Corey, Shawn and the rest of the band from early on and their grief over him was a big deal. R.I.P. Paul.
Slipknot actually have a song that was heavily inspired by The Collector called Prosthetics. It's off the first album so it may be a bit heavier than you'd like but I'd recommend checking it out if the concept intrigued you.
The song is about an abusive and controlling relationship. The soft chorus part is like the "making amends and apologizing" before the 2nd verse is the cycle repeating itsself And by the way, I like your theory at the end
Corey blew his voice out after the iowa tour and was trying something new with his scream on this album. A lot of people weren't a fan of it so he went back to a lower style for their next album, although with a much healthier technique than on iowa.
And, ironically, a lot of people hated the AHIG vocals even more. I personally think his current scream is the best he's had, sounds as brutal as he can get to Iowa vocals without actually straining his voice.
@@regorf I thought he sounded good on the album, but live it sounded like he was struggling to maintain the distortion a lot of the time. I agree, he sounds better now than he has in a long time.
@@erikboris5029 In 2019 he wasn't consistent with it. After they took a break and continued their tour at the start of 2020 both Corey and Tortilla Man improved their live growls.
@@erikboris5029 Oh, yeah in AHIG tour he was struggling with long screams. I think that was after he started working with a vocal coach so he was probably redeveloping his technique, he got it by .5, his screams sounded great in Hous of Gold and Bones too. But Hydrograd and WANYK vocals are at Corey's best. Some might prefer the craziness and rawness of S/T and Iowa, but, based on pure technique, his vocals now are the best they've ever been.
Corey Taylor stopped smoking in the last couple albums. A big enhancment to his voice control and sound. He was screaming his throat bloody on Iowa. Hell he was cutting himself with glass during songs in Iowa. Dude is taking MUCH better care of himself right now. :D Chris Fehn (long nose, not in the band anymore) Also did backup vocals on a lot of songs, so you may be hearing him as the second voice layered onto Corey's voice in affects.
I think Corey does all the vocals on the album, but it should be noted that when played live, Corey does the main vocals, it's a sample of his studio vocals for the background harmonies, and Chris and/or Shawn who do the alternating vocals in the quickfire verses.
Idk if anyone has answered this yet, but Corey's voice sounds different on this album because he was literally just screaming on the first two records, and on this one he actually started taking lessons. He also said in an interview he was "just trying something new because I like to change things", which I think is partially true, but he also got sober while recording vol 3. So you can imagine how much pain his throat was in being 100% awake and aware all the time. I feel like he landed on this scream because it was the only technique that didn't hurt his vocal chords while he was recovering from the first two albums/tours.
Yeah and another point of note is that there's virtually no swearing on the album, as the band wanted to prove people wrong who said that they were incapable of making an album without excessive profanity... and this was obviously coming straight off the back of Iowa which is full of harsh language and delivery.
I hope you can do more songs from their first album. some good ones are Wait and Bleed, Spit it Out, Prosthetics, (sic), and Eyeless. I also like how you are slowly getting familiar with the members. The one in that picture that was second from left in the back, with the mask you said you have never seen before is Paul Gray, their bassist who passed away in 2010. Corey dedicates Snuff to him when he performs it live at his shows.
I knew there was someone else but not the face. All of those songs you mentioned are on my list. BUT I did Spit It Out live from 09 video. Not sure when I'll post it.
You absolutely need to listen to Snuff the acoustic version. I know you’ll love it. I do as well as millions of others. Cory shows his sensitive and vulnerable side in that song
Just subscribed to your channel. Over here in England and I am loving your Slipknot reactions. Been into them since '99 and they just get better. Looking forward to the next one.
I know we already confirmed this in the last comment section but yes you are right about The Sid part, he is up front and center in this song scratching and using the xylophone sound which is a kinda sample he uses. As for the meaning you are pretty spot on, it’s really entertaining to watch you squirm sometimes as you try to figure out the lyrics lol but you always do a great job of piecing the puzzles together. As far as being trapped by a stalker and dark lyrics this song is good and all but I challenge you to make a poll and put The song Purity on it. Purity is about an incident in Iowa where a guy kidnapped a girl I think in the 80’s and kept her in a box. It’s off their first album but like this song it’s angry Corey and then soft Corey but with a darker twist. The song was banned and taken off the album and Slipknot had to go to court to defend the lyrics. Eventually Slipknot won and decided to make it a bonus track. I’m just sayin you would love it. Anyways thank you for this song! It’s one of my favorites. PS: Corey blew is voice out last album so he needed to take a break from Psycho Corey. This album is like a vocal experiment that threw a lot of people off. Some of the more hardcore fans did not take kindly to this album but it grew on a lot of them eventually. Sometimes Coreys genius needs to Marinade for a while.
I'm finally hearing Sid correctly! For this song at least. :) I like the idea of Purity but the fact that it was banned scares me. I'll stick it on the list anyway. I've seen it mentioned a few times.
I love that idea of listening to Spit It Out before watching it live at Download 2009. (Download is a music festival in England somewhere if you didn’t know) The reason this one is so HEAVILY requested is the showmanship of it all. (LOTS OF CURSING outside of just the lyrics) Corey’s command over the crowd (70,000+ people) Joey GOES OFF on the drums, the crowd is insane, Jim and Mick go heavy, Clown and Pinocchio as well. Just the show in general is incredible!
Awesome! You have to listen to the audio to the official video...Heck just take a peek at the original video with the volume on 11... it is totally live and Coreys vocals are soooooo raw. (im sure clown directed that video). I actually like the audio from the video more than the studio. (that sentence is a tongue twister)
I would like you listen Critical Darling by Slipknot. The Lyrics are so interesting and i SO LOVE your channel! Cheers From Peru! Continue doing what you like :3
Yeah you definitely need to check out prosthetics. The song is based on The Collector from what I've read. It's one of those songs that i didn't really like at first, but like most slipknot songs, they grow on ya
You should watch disasterpiece live 2002 in London (that's the name of the tour also but the song specifically you should listen to), that is peak slipknot and that live performance is INSANE! That and the spit it out live at download 2009, which is their best live performance of that song, are both amazing. Disasterpieces tour in 2002 and the download 2009 festival were a couple of their best performances.
Your channel is starting to blow up! More people need to check you out to help Bring good lyrics back! So many songs now days are about absolutely nothing. Maybe I'm just getting old? 😞
Not sure if you've ever heard of Hail the Sun but i've been listening to them for too long these past few weeks. Amazing vocalist (who is also the drummer), and from what i can tell from watching your videos.. You love drumming.
i personally enjoy all versions of corey for different reasons. also another one that is completely different is Only One off of their self titled album. the drums are great in that one too!
Another band you may find interesting is Jinjer. Most reaction channels react to Pisces which is a great song but Teacher Teacher is an interesting little ditty as well.
This song's switching between styles always reminded me of my childhood hobby of switching between radio channels while I was on a drive with my family because I used to try to combine 2 different stations to make some kind of "super-song"(I dunno, I was a weird kid)
It's about how for a long time Corey was in love with a positively loathsome creation. Possibly his previous image in the band. I read it somewhere Corey himself said that this song was kinda a hint to all those people who fucked them over and really stirred up shit on the IOWA cycle.
If you'd like to listen to another song about obsession, I'd really recommend "The Virus Of Life". It's another song of the Vol. 3 album. Corey said in an interview that if he had to choose a song to be Vermilion part 3, it would be this song based on the lyrics. It is also probably one of their creepiest songs so..... I hope you enjoy it :)
Got a bit sad when you mentioned the guy who looked like he was smiling in the back, his name was Paul Gray, he passed away in 2010. He was the bass player. RIP
There's another song on that album called "The virus of life" where it's from the point of view of a stalker, you know "watching/following you all day and if you hear me i'll enjoy try to find you" type of stuff. it's not everyone cups of tea but a cool song nonetheless. :p
There's some comments here about how he blew his voice after Iowa tour, but what he does in this album is what's known as vocal frying. Corey is literally frying his vocals doing this which is why it sounds so angry. This album is what really blew his vocals so after the album he hired a vocal coach to learn to do healthier screams which is why he sounds so different now. It's because he literally changed how he does vocals completely. It's not as aggressive but at least he can still produce a sound out his voice.
Gotta agree with @Devon 👇 Add 'prosthetics' to your list. Having read The Collector you'll be familiar with the back story, and may identify with the song 🤘🤘🤘
I was waiting for this one. Theres a lot to say, If I miss anything I'll put a reply under this comment. Where to start.. I did warn about the subject matter. It is definitely a weird one, I totally understand that. I only requested it because of the way the song is composed. I usually don't listen for the lyrics really, I'm not much of a lyrical analysist. The vocals in the Official Audio are all Corey, but in their live performances, it's Corey and Chris (Pinnochio). He really ruined his voice in Vol.3 (3 Years after their most brutal album, Iowa), that's why he sounds totally different here. The Instrument work is what really makes it stand out. The switch-ups, the dialog-like vocals in the verses, and whatnot really give this song a personality of its own, even if it has a horrible topic, which quite a few songs tend to lack. The instruments. Yes, there's a lot going on. Of course you have Mick and Jim (the iconic duo) and their Bassist, Paul Gray, who sadly passed in 2010. There is some instances in the song where both the extra band members play, and I noticed you picked up on that. The scratches in the intro and pre-verses are indeed Sid. The weird additions like the screaming were sampled by Craig, I believe. Im glad you're keeping an open mind when listening to this. Most people would've been put off by songs like these ones in particular. You handled it well, is what I can say. Thank you for the reactions. Please don't stop doing them. I hope to see your take on Gematria (The Killing Name) soon.
This was a stand-out song in many ways and one of my favorites from them for sure. BUUUUT to me, Pinhead and Sid are the iconic duo. :D I have no idea why but they are. (Soon, no, but that song is on my list.)
This is gotta be one of slipknot's most complex songs to play live, if all the 9 of them are not precisely coordinated it just would not sound good, I guess that's one of the reasons they didn't played it much even on the Subliminal Verses era. Even tho they made an official video of the song and shit.
Hi! Ok first of all quit apologizing for how you do your reactions! If we don't like it we can go somewhere else. You're doing great! If it's a recorded song everything you hear is Corey Taylor sometimes live the band helps out on the vocals. You should definitely do a reaction to Spit It Out live at download! Thanks for doing these!
I just got to the part of you talking about the collector. They have a song that is based on the collector if im not mistaken. Its called prosthetics. Also for live shows i know spit it out 2009 is like a great thing but i like the kimmel and conan shows better ( the blister exists/ the heritic anthem) also custer live show or (im sorry) the iowa stuff with people=shit and disasterpiece from 2002 (i think). They are great.
The reason that Corey sounds different on this album is due to improper screaming techniques on the self-titled and Iowa albums, and severe alcoholism. He completely blew out his voice in late 2002/early 2003 while on tour with Stone Sour. His alcoholism was so bad that he was waking up with a bottle of Jack and passing out at night with a bottle, which led to him almost jumping off a balcony. For Vol. 3 he was newly sober and essentially had to relearn how to scream again.
I will get very 🤓 and technical about the singing because well I'm a singer and corey is my favorite singer of all time right next to chester Bennington and Chris Cornell so now if you stayed that's because you are interested: Corey's voice in this album sound different indeed and that's because this is right after iowa. Self-titled and iowa tours destroyed Corey's vocals because he was using a very weird "technique" and that is basically screaming as hard as he could. When you scream that hard your false cords activate automatically, this is not a voluntary thing it is a reflex so you can't really control it and you need an absurd amount of diaphragm strength to make a whole show and even more stamina. This along with corey jumping and running during performances made his false cords to give up the pressure and that damaged his voice, that's why his screams are so raw, because they're just raw screams. During vol.3 he realized what he was doing to his voice so he changed that to another technique that is basically the same but now it uses fry scream, that's why he sound way higher and he could do way longer screams, this technique is very silent but it isn't as abrasive to his voice as the last one. Years after he went to full false chord during AHIG and during .5 he struggled to make the screams so he took vocal classes and quitted smoking which is always a good thing. Finally nowadays he uses a mixed voice between fry and false chord but perfectly applied and safe this time. If somebody read all of this just be aware that I love you and I thank you so much for reading ❤
Corey changed his scream because he was screaming "wrong". He tried to change it up in this album and the stone sour album come what ever may... he than quoted he's "not feeling" that anymore. So he went back to the older style but done more safely.
9:24 No, not really. There have been 2 rules set up for Slipknot ever since the band started: 1. There are always 3 drummers. 2. Slipknot plays whatever the fuck they want to play. A prime example of #2 is their demo Do Nothing/Bitchslap although that is pre-Corey Slipknot.
If you want the soft side of Bullet for my valentine, you should listen to their song "all these things i hate (revolves around me). I hope you will make reaction about this song soon. I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Do "512" by lamb of God. It's about the singers time in prison in the Czech Republic for allegedly killing a fan. Very deep dark lyrics im sure you would appreciate.
Vol3 which is this album, even tho vermillion pt 1 is my all time favorite song of all time yet this album is my least favorite. However this album is pretty solid
Favorite song of all time? Whoa. I really need to do this one. I know a few years ago, I tried to listen to it and I made it through the first verse, I think. At that point, I'd only ever heard Snuff and Pt 2, maybe Psychosocial. And look at me now! lol
