Hi guys, I decided to a Slog2 vs Slog3 vs HLG3 Extremely High Dynamic Range test to see which one of these sony picture profiles do better in terms of dynamic range and noise performance in such a extreme condition (You will barely face this extreme situation when shooting outside). I used my Sony A7III for this test and as far as I know this should be applicable to most sony alpha cameras because the gamma curve of Slog2, Slog3 and HLG3 picture profiles are the same in sony cameras. I would be really glad to hear your opinions too about this test and any further information would be highly appreciated!

So by doing this interesting test, I'm changing my mind to use Slog3 in my future cinematic videos 😅 I should definitely test it with what I saw in this test! 😂

Mehran, I feel there might be a chance of more banding if you choose slog 3 especially on skies with gradations. Because you'll be pulling the mids and shadows much more in post than the Slog 2. Let us know your observations.

Great work mate! I've always listened that Slog2 was better than Slog3 in 8 bits, but in your comparison I see also Slog3 great. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for doing this! Unfortunately I'm not using a full frame camera. And my a6600's are 8 bit. So, this probably wouldn't work with my current gear unless I have plenty of light I suppose. But, I ordered the fx30 and will have it in a couple of days. So, I'm excited to experiment with it. Again, not FF but at least 10 bit 422. Most of my work is in a controlled environment anyways where I can give it plenty of light, usually. My question is about DR though. I have been using PPRO for too long. I wonder, do you think it would be worth getting DR and color grading and denoising there before I go to premiere? Is that possible? Or would it degrade along the way when rendering out of DR to edit in PPRO and render a second time? I would hate that workflow but until I can get use to DR and separate myself from PPRO I probably need to stay in PPRO.

I've just found your channel and you have great content! I'm on my way to learning more about picture profiles and color grading and this video and the one on how to convert HLG to Rec709 had helped me a lot!! If you could make a video para explaining why Matrix gamma is best with 8bit cameras would be amazing! I have a 6400 and I've heard slog3 is not recommended (that's why I started using HLG) but seeing this video I had second thoughts about this. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge! Keep it up!!

Thanks so much for watching dude! Really appreciate your words. The reason why the S.gamut is not good with our 8 bit codec is that sony is not using the REAL S.gamut color space with the Slog in our 8 bit cameras! And that's because of the limitations of 8 bit video which can not fit all the data in it! So the Rec709 is the better option with 8bit videos

Brilliant analysis. Thanks for sharing this. I agree slog3 was better initially. But after fill light was introduced slog2 is better. So I guess - use Slog2 when you need details on shadowsn and use slog3 when you need details on bright and mid tones.

You accidentaly convinced me to buy the Studio version of Da Vinci to have the noise reduction :) I'm using Slog 2 but I'm finding sometimes that when I don't expose perfectly, later on it's a nightmare to grade. HLG has less range, but it's more forgiving and easy to use it seems... Slog 3 I never managed to get something right, but on yours I think was the best also :D

Same here. But are you able to get decent rec2020 out of slog? Or is it possible only from hlg? If yes - how do you transform. I have set it as input is slog an output is rec2020. But am not getting the kind of details. Am sure shots are well exposed, issues is during post prod. With HLD I do get the rec2020, but details captured by hlg is lower than slog, so wanted to know where am i going wrong?

Great comparison Mehran. This is something a lot of people are looking out for in RU-vid but no one really cared to make a video like this before.. so big thanks to you man.. What’s your take on skin tones between these profiles ? I’m seeing very mixed opinions across RU-vid.. Personally the skins look way pleasing with SLOG gamma.. there's something magical happening in the skin IRE values with SLOG 2 compared to the HLG3/2.

it could be true but in my opinion, The Slog2 is the best pp in terms of dynamic range and tonal separation specially in shadow areas and I really like it, but because sony A7 III has autofocus issues with slog profiles, I'm using HLG3 profile instead! This such fantastic demonstration of the Sony camera in the HLG3 and SLOG3 Picture Profile, Mehran. The dynamic range is unreal. I am just curious, but which input color space and which color transformation are you using? I am struggling to get the colors right in my recent videos. Here are my settings: Input Color Space: Rec.2020 ; Rec.2100 HLG Timeline Color Space: Rec.2020 ; ST2084 1000 nit Output Color Space: Rec.2020 ; ST2084 10000 nit I would really appreciate the help. I think this video demonstrates the colors so well!
@rahuls4863

I too am not able to solve. But I feel, in your setting - you should not chose rec2020 for input - instead chose the one in which you shot - slog / hlg. Only that way system know the actual width of dynamic range and gets all the data correctly. In output rec2020 is fine, because you need the HDR.

Thank you for this test Mahran. However, I think you achieved a better exposure by adding the fill light but you killed the cinematic depth in the image. In this situation, I would have added rather a negative fill on the left and then ,in post, crushed the dark side of the face all the way down. By this way you crush the noise with it.

Honestly speaking - no normal viewer watching your footage will even notice. This is exacltly what happened with HiFi in the 1980s/1990s - people were listening to the HiFi and analysing every single nuance rather than listening to the music. As a creator you might think for 2 seconds a view will think OMG - the shadow rendition is that not good there. The reality is they may have looked away for a few seconds to pick up a drink or talk to someone. This whole Slog thing has become obsessive. Just take good content and in focus and relatively good colours (out of camera is fine). Then you can spend more time taking more interesting footage / content rather than wasting time worrying about colour grading. Anyhow justmy opinion.
@MehranHadad
@MehranHadad 2 года назад
Hello Colin. I totally agree that GOOD CONTENT is the most important of any kind of art ( Photography, Videography, Music ...). But we can't deny the importance of technical side either! It can really change the quality of the outcome! Good luck and best wishes

Beautiful words and up to the point...That's exactly what's happening nowadays with many creators: obsession of picture profiles and "cinematic" image instead of a story. Go create interesting stories with your cameras and don't pay so much attention to slogs, clogs, arri logs or whatever "logs".
