Slow and Snowy Days in Berlin 

I really like that youre honest about your smoking and drinking habits. All those 'perfect' influencers who just promote all things they can't get critized for are just really unrealistic to me sometimes. A lot of young people especially in Europe enjoy partying that includes drinking and smoking, including me, and I can identify myself more with people who live a more realistic lifestyle for a young adult. So please stay honest and raw - we love that :)

Here in the UK smoking is relatively common. My family are from France where everyone smokes so young, and here in the UK school kids don’t smoke like they do in France, but here at Uni social smoking is pretty common but not necessarily the norm!!

your videos make me wanna get out of serious relationship and live by myself ........ make my own routine, start smoking again, listen to music while I cook, drink a whole bottle of vine alone, going for groceries at 2 am...... I was so reckless compared to how I am now. You remind me of myself when I was 19 (almost 24 now) and I kinda miss that part of myself and that time in my life not gonna lie. thanks for the video Maxi

French girl here, been smoking since I was maybe 15. I now vape but I still smoke "real" cigarettes when I drink when I am with friends or juste when I feel like it! I agree that it is totally normal in most of Europe... don't feel ashamed, we all know it's nasty but we love it sometimes... love to see you back on RU-vid btw 🥰 bisous !

I grew up in the US and was shocked when I saw so many people smoking in Europe. It’s tough because when other people smoke around you, you’re inhaling that, even if you don’t want to. So I don’t judge people for smoking, I just hate when I can’t get around inhaling second hand smoke, especially because it makes me nauseated and gives me a headache.

Hey Maxi, just wanted to say how I appreciate the way you are so real and down to earth, while at the same time being such a big inspo. I love how you talk about smoking and drinking, it's so important to stop guilt-tripping ourselves about enjoying substances that are fundamentally enjoyable. Of course this is not to say we should promote them but only to recognize that they are part of our lives and that they can be used throughout a healthy lifestyle if used with a conscience mind. Oh and apart from that, you are beyond beautiful. Hope you're happy and that you never doubt about how awesome you are! xx

In Poland all the 'cool kids' smoked cigs in high school, at every house party most of the people smoked, but when I went on exchange to US, no one thought that smoking cigs was cool, but more people smoked green...

Alcohol is a depressive, and I always notice feeling a little sad the next few days! I love to drink from time to time but I definitely notice a difference and feel a little down sometimes the next few days. It's totally a balance

YES to drinking and smoking! I am from the UK and everyone does it. I don't really like smoking sober anymore and its a slippy slope so I am like you

I feel less and less people in Germany are smoking, especially young people. When I lived in Australia, about 50% of the people I was around were smoking (outback). I haven't had a cigarette since leaving Australia and because I'm not going out in Germany and get tempted by people smoking around me when I drink.

Smoking is super uncommon in the US! But I’ve been to Europe a lot and it is very common there. We stayed in an Airbnb in Berlin that was behind an art studio (they owned the flat). They smoked 24/7 and it was sooo strong 😂 But, that’s just Europe, so we didn’t mind that much. It’s common is much of Asia, too.

I love your vlogs, I studied in Berlin from Jan. 2019- May 2019 and seeing your shots of Berlin always make me miss it... seeing you in the grocery store made me ask myself if you were in an Edeka or somewhere else. Ugh I just want to go back to Berlin and be your friend hahaha

Totally agree with the smoking thing. When I moved to Berlin I also started smoking when drinking and it was just part of the lifestyle there (unlike in Australia where I never smoked!). I don’t really do it anymore because I also made some bad experiences with it but generally totally get the appeal :D

This is the first video I've seen of yours and I really like your honesty. My whole life I've been told how bad smoking is but at uni in the UK social smoking is typical, and I've tried it once or twice. Lately (probably bc of lockdown blues) I've been craving trying it but trying to stay strong bc I've no will power (if I get addicted ill struggle to stop) x

I also didn't understand the appeal of cigarets for a while. Recently, when I decided to deconstruct some self imposed rules, I tried smoking when I was stressed and it helped a little. Even with friends, it seems a little silly but it helps for blending in. The thing is it shouldn't be a problem if it's once in a while and no value is given to smoking. In the UK and Ireland a lot of people smoke when they drink and nights out, and also a lot of students. It's pretty normal, also rollies are very very common too.

i grew up in poland, and honestly in my late teenage years the vast majority of my friends smoked, some as a regular habit and some just at parties/when drinking. i've only ever been a 'social smoker' and only smoked when partying or drinking, but generally overall it is a very normal thing there. now that i study in the uk, i think a little less young people here smoke, and i feel like there is a little more scrutiny from some people towards those who smoke. i also think one of the reasons for that is the fact that cigarettes in the uk are WAY more expensive (which is also partly done to discourage people from smoking) than they are in poland. i smoke occasionally myself when i'm drinking with people who smoke/at parties, and like you said, it's quite enjoyable in those moments even though you are aware it's a bad habit at the same time lol. idk, i have a lot of conflicting thoughts about it, and i definitely want to stop doing even the very casual social smoking i'm doing right now when i'm like in my mid 20s or something. thank you for talking about this and being open because i feel like this is a v relevant topic for so so many teenagers & young adults in europe

I completely get the smoking thing, its my NY resolution not too anymore but that was definitely me the last few years, with a red wine or a drink in social settings it just felt right, but sober me hates it so I am trying not too, appreciate the transparency! :)

as an aussie who has also lived in germany - everyone in germany smoked and while im an asthmatic who cannot i actually miss being around the act when im drinking. i get weird looks from my friends at home when i say that drinking outside while being able to smell cigs gives me nice nostalgia haha - once you get to uni and past in aus tho i will say a bunch of my friends started to smoke ESP when drinking

So happy you're vlogging again Maxi! In the US it's pretty uncommon to smoke, at least with the people I know. But when I was in London everyone smokes hand rolled cigarettes and I really enjoyed smoking there!

the reason why smoking ciggs is appealing because its c'es chicccc & its just relaxing in a way idk ... & also i started smoking at a very young age 12 years old or 13 maybe and then i stopped for a while and then started smoking vapes in highschool and then kept smoking vapes until my college years, and then i started smoking cigarettes at 19 yrs old and but i am now 22 yrs old i have completely stopped smoking just because i want my body to recover? if thats makes sense? and getting into my lifestyle like what you said is making me debate if i wanna smoke ciggs again lets say if i travel to europe and asia where theres alot of smokers and most likely a culture thing , but idk if i want to again, i already experienced it and i felt like i smoked so much. I would go to work & there would be a craving where i want to take a break and smoke but idk if thats the point of working out or detox so you can sweat it out , still i havent smoked in a long time and idk if i wanna take that risk again and i think influence with who you you're with or what you see definitely can play in a part of it ( this is all just my opinion) omg i just realized you covered some of the stuff i said in here after watching more of the vid haha LOL

I'm italian and i only have a few friends whi don't smoke.. pretty muh all my frids smoke regularly.. i'm just like you.. almost neve smoke alone and i can go days without cigarettes but i really love smoking when i'm with my friends chatting, eating and drinking wine.. and i agree with you, it actually adds "something" to the chill situations, so i think that if you do it sometimes and it makes you happy, it's ok!! :)

Maxi, it's actually refreshing that you are so open about smoking and drinking online. I'm from the US and people (and our laws lmao) are so uptight about smoking and drinking and I have had strangers look at me in disgust, pull their kids away, and lecture me for smoking in public. I don't do it very often now because as you said it is in Australia, there aren't even many places that allow you to smoke even if you're outside. However, when I studied in Paris, it was weird to people if you didn't smoke because I swear Parisians inhale cigarette smoke more than they do oxygen. I really wish people had more of a "you do you" attitude about smoking and drinking because as long as you are not harming others, you should be able to decide what you do with YOUR body! P.S. I feel you about the vegan community. I have been vegan for six years (and have followed you since you were earthlingmaxi lol) but am very careful about how I present myself to others because I am absolutely not a perfect vegan. Thanks for always keeping it real ❤️

Don’t worry about Maxi. Smoking usually comes hand in hand with growing, no matter if you grow out of it or not. I struggle with it. Obv I don’t really want to (for health reasons) but it’s so nice with a drink. The goal is to quit but...we’re young right?! 😝

I think it's so unfair when people are encouraged not to be truthful in their content because it's keeping the whole 'perfect' persona alive on insta etc. If people are pissed off with your choices then it's really none of their business. I'm from Glasgow and probably about half of my friends smoke (even though it's not permitted to smoke in beer gardens/terraces etc), but I feel like it's a bit different from other European countries because although there are still so many young people that do it, most of them don't actually want to, they're only doing it because of addiction. Most of my friends say it's just a uni thing and they'll stop after! Loving the regular uploads Maxi!! I’m from the Dominican Republic, wanted to add to the comments about smoking in different parts of the world. I’m 23 and have never smoked, none of my friends smoke and it’s pretty frowned upon here but not uncommon. I feel like it’s more common among young people (18, 19 and in their 20s) who go out a lot, my boyfriend used to smoke cigarettes, now he vapes and most of his friends vape as well. I don’t know that many older people who smoke or vape.

I live in the US smoking cigarettes is not common at all. But recently puff bars are so popular. I guess also because a lot of bars don’t allow indoor smoking. I remember I visited Paris and Madrid about 3 years ago and I was shocked how common it was lol

You do you. As you started to delve into, we are conditioned to believe certain things depending on culture, systems of government, etc. Here in Aus the govt has made it very difficult to smoke, therefore turning it into an act that leaves a person cast out of the norm, thereby steadily reducing numbers. In other places it has been glamourised (through fashion, media, celebrities, etc), therefore more people do it, regardless of risk. When it comes to addiction, risk is often not a consideration. There are just so many studies and scholarly articles written on this. It's insane. Good on you for thinking about it and being open and honest. I did a lot worse when I was your age lol! PS. Nice video! Made me want to go outside and walk in the snow lol I don't smoke and it actually bothers me to some extent when people smoke too much in your face. Or when my neighbour smokes in the morning and I cannot fully open the windows because of the smell... However, a lot of my friends do (especially those living in France). They started smoking when moving there. As you say, it is a thing that depends a lot on society, so it is easier to catch the habit if you are more exposed. I don't personally mind you posting or not posting about it, since it doesn't affect me or other adult followers. I find it a bit disturbing when smoking is 'glamourised', though

in spain is pretty common to see young people smoking and sometimes is viewed like a cool thing to do... which i think is not, specially if you are a minor. but you are an adult living your own life so how am i to say anything about your life? I like that you bring out this topic bc we see influencers being perfect when in fact they are just as human as you are. Plus you explained it pretty well!

I feel like by the time you turn 25, the hangovers suddenly get MUCH worse and drinking to excess becomes even less worth the trade off. It's good to be so self-aware about how alcohol affects you, a lot of people don't make the connection that alcohol can affect your energy levels! (I'm an ex-bartender, I would know lol) And in the US smoking is much less common than in Europe and is much less tolerated in public spaces. I am often overwhelmed by how ubiquitous cigarette smoking is in cities like Berlin or Rome. I only know one person my age in the states who smokes but for arguments sake I think the actual number is around 15% of adults. I have asthma, so I would never smoke. I live in an area with high levels of air pollution so I'm already having to deal with that...the additional pollutant of smoking would make my condition even worse.

I’m English. I totally agree. Everyone in Europe smokes, well at least everyone under 30. It’s part of the cold moody European culture. I completely agree. It’s especially common in European cities. Even the UK is stricter and more judgemental about smoking then Europe. It’s really evident to me when I go to Greece, Spain, Belgium or the Netherlands that smoking is even more common - ash trays on outside tables etc, cheaper etc! I rate your honesty - I’m vegan and have been since your vegan Sydney days away back! I still drink and smoke and probably always will to some extent! Hey I’m already vegan, I gotta be allowed some treats in my opinion haha! Keep being honest Maxi 🤍🤍🤍

In the Netherlands smoking is common too, however it is becoming less and less popular (i.m.o.). When I was 16 pretty much al my friends did it.. Now I am in uni and I see less people doing it. Maybe it has to do with the fact that it's not allowed everywhere anymore and gets really expensive as well, just like in Australia. Big fan of the idea that everyone should make their own choices regarding smoking, but I would say discouragement is a good thing. After all it is bad for you and costs us all more money (health care system is paid for by government and in the end we pay the government trough taxes). Please don't feel attacked people, just giving my humble opinion. I find it quite interesting to read how the rest of the world 'handles' smoking, therefore I commented! PS: take care everyone, covid is taking a toll on every single one of us, but in the end everything will be OK! Hang in there! X
