This week we make a kawandi inspired quilt in miniature though I also share and talk about a larger lap quilt I have made inspired by this tradition.

Does it make anyone else sad every time she says "Oh, come on. Stop your wittering, Katherine"? It gives me the impression she's been silenced all her life or that no one listens to her. Lady, we are all here *for* your wittering! You're a lovely and talented person and all your dedicated viewers want to hear what you have to say! You're the queen of your craft (and about a thousand other subjects if your tangents are anything to go by) and we're all in debt to you for sharing your knowledge. Witter on, please!

I am so exited about this week’s slow stitch. I made a Kawandi after watching Marion’s World and I entered it in our local Show in the handcrafts section and received a ‘Highly Commended’. To be honest I don’t think they quite knew what it was but evidently liked it anyway. I can see doing a mini is going to be a challenge but I can’t wait to get started.

*Emerges from Kawandi rabbit hole. ..squinting into many ring lights* So now I am utterly fascinated by something that I never knew existed until a few hours ago. Kathryn I loved your video so much that I watched all the linked ones too Margaret is phenomenal and the embodiment of a life well lived. Her best comment on Kawandi? "Stop shopping" 😂 Then Marion. Yes the 'stop shopping ' part was what I referred to about 34 minutes in. I so agreed with her that if you carefully select and buy the fabric, the thing is already made. 😁 I am wanting to make a long floaty kawandi skirt inspired by Marion. Who knows when but I will share it when I do. Did you come across another interview with Margaret called How One Sees? Also fascinating... @@k3n.clothtales Oh yes please do make and share the skirt! I just watched your link. An interesting point from Margaret is that they have the work on their knee so they're not seeing the Kawandi until it's finished. That is very freeing. There is such movement and colour. I wonder if working outdoors in full sun plays a part? Kawandi- the gift that keeps on giving!

We love listening to you wittering on! You have been such an inspiration in my stitching journey. I never look at a piece of fabric the same way now. I would love to see you do a page in your journal with trapunto stitching. I remember my Grandma doing a lot of scenic fabric pictures that she had framed on her wall that she had stitched. We can make trapunto have a comeback!

You know, there is a children's book entitled Wacky Wednesday. My children and grandchildren really obsessed over it! Now, we adult women have our Wonky Wednesday...YAY!!! I loved this lesson and have done one with frayed edges....because I prefer them. But I am going to do another one with folded edges this week. There is something magical to this!

Having caught up to this week I have tried to stitch with you. I found your "whittering" so relaxing while I stitch and quite mindful, and you have a soothing voice. The problem is I slow stitch slower than you and had to pausing to catch up periodically, which wasn't so mindful so I stopped doing that. I let the video run and will play it over again as many times as I need and enjoy the whittering all over again. I have learn a lot about Kawandi now, since my very poor attempt in Week 4, so am trilled you chose this one, thank you. I'm looking forward to next week and all the other Mondays now. ❤

thank you for your company and guidance. i'm not a great follower (commenting quite late, still haven't got a slowstich journal, not particularly following along but just plugging away at a handstitched kimono set) but i love listening to and learning from you. on cultural traditions, respect is everything! always love how clearly you state that you are taking inspiration and encouraging us viewers to go our own way :) culture, like language, is what we humans make of it. so long as taking inspiration doesn't overwrite the tradition... (that sounds ominous and pessimistic oops, i do think it's fine! probably. i always hedge, just in case ^^; )

My sister and I started your project the first of the year. We are enjoying every minute of it, fun working together. We have some fabric and old quilt blocks that were our great aunts. We are using just those for this project, We are a bit limited on the colors, but it will become a loved family treasure, Will send pics sometime soon. I'm not a quilter but I really enjoyed this project. I so much more enjoy doing my own thing and this allowed me to just go for it. Oh this really resonated with me. I love the coming together of tearing scraps and stitching to create something so beautiful, and potentially useful. I may have to consider trying a full sized one. BTW my husband meditates and uses a technique called Siddhi. I’m guessing that it originates from the same part of India, so more research may well be undertaken…🙂

How fun. I just received the last materials I needed to practice a Kawandi lap blanket for my husband with his favorite football team colors and team fabric. From there I’ll be making 4 queen size quilts for family (my 3 kids and my mom) but I wanted a practice piece first. Your method of adding the fuller was so timely. That’s been something I haven’t grasped based on videos I’ve watched to date. Thanks for your tips. Marion of Marion’s World is worth mentioning. Her work is beautiful and like you a great teacher.

I completely agree with you about keeping any tradition alive. As long as you respect and acknowledge that your quilt is inspired by the Siddi people and their tradition of Kawandi making you are not appropriating their idea. If people are not educated about these skills then they will completely die out and the history of the Siddi people will eventually be forgotten, which would be tragic for any people and their traditions. That is just my opinion. 😊

Am SO glad you chose Kawandi for this week. Have been itching to try this style, and your ones just increase the urge. Am having fun choosing my fabrics. This will be a good trial run for two larger projects I hope to make, in both cases fabrics that are deteriorating and need shoring up: I think Kawandi will be the way to save them from landfill.

Margaret Fabrizio is sensational. I happened upon her work and genius about 6 months ago and couldn't stop telling friends my age (60s) about this inspirational woman. Her RU-vid channel is atree3 and lets you into the world of Fabrizio Fabulousness. I too had a little ah ha moment when Margaret said, "the minute you go into a store to buy new fabric, you've lost the plot". I kind of felt this all along, but it took her saying it to really get me to seriously adopt this mindset. Kathryn, I've only just chanced upon your channel in the past 24 hours and I've already devoured content. I can see why you have a healthy flock of subscribers (including me now). Thanks for all the time and creative energy you put into making your videos. I've set aside my spinning and knitting and started dragging out the fabric collection from years of op shop finds and fabric store flutters.

I have been wanting to try this technique…..have watched a couple of videos of the women making these pieces from saris and it’s fascinating. Your video is so simple and doable. I tried folding the fabric and found it hard on fingers and hands. Going to try your method. The edges of each square will get quite interesting after a bit of wear and time.🦋

Im making one for my granddaughter I started out with a bigger one so she can use it at the daycare. At first I said this was my first and last but now I have a hard time putting it down I love working on it so I see more in my future and I also want to make my other granddaughter a journal for her to write in. Thank you for all your inspiration that you have given me. I enjoy watching you so much.

I also prefer the raw edges, as I prefer them in everything I do. I watched Margaret, the video appeared on my feed somehow and I was curious about it. That’s how I found out about Kawandi. I also watched Marion, because I subscribe to her channel. She’s an awesome artist, but you are also😉! So I tried it with raw edges, I didn’t tuck in any edge, because that’s the way I liked it and I believe the siddi women would be very happy that we’re being inspired by her work 😊 When the video started, besides having the pleasure of seeing you 😊, I saw Fredfred sleeping on the chair and little Stella next to him 🥰 I hope she’s feeling better from falling while sleeping 😴 Poor girl 🥰 See you on wonky Wednesday 💙🩷♥️🤍💜💚🧡🤎🩵💛

Really hard to avoid, someone suggested starting stitching half way along a side so it's easier to see the starting point 😉❤️

Love this technique . Used scraps from last weeks feathers . Instead of solid backing , used a print so it showed between scraps .

I appreciate learning the traditional way of kawandi. But I'm thinking usually i watch to get inspiration. And so while watching I'm getting all kinds of inspiration to vary the tradition. This is a very good tutorial. I'm American, enjoying listening to you speak as you sew. Thank you.

I’m very familiar with Margaret Fabrizio. She a fascinating person and a master at playing the harpsichord. I’ve seen her video about the Siddi people; and watched them use multiple layers of cloth to push their needles through their work which is multiple layers thick, almost as a type of thimble. This type of quilting is not necessarily for me, but extremely fascinating to watch! I look forward to making my little piece of kawandi quilting. 😊

Margaret does a little demonstration at the end of the interview I mentioned and uses a pad of cloth as you describe. I am so impressed by her commitment to learning about Kawandi. At one point she describes western quilting as like Bach and Kawandi being more like jazz, a great musician's analogy. 😉❤️

So Kathryn I was wondering…is it okay to use batting? 😂. Just couldn’t resist. 😂. Also I have Joey the cockapoo as you know and I laughed when Stella fell off the stool bc Joey has done something similar. Maybe it’s just their way of slinking down to the ground 😂. But yes glad I have carpet.

What a coincidence, at this moment I'm making some mini kawandi's. I love the idea to make one with raw edges, because my hands are not very happy from stitching through all the folded edges...

I like listening to your tales, at the background while I am doing some craft. What you're telling about kawandi and the siddi people sounds interesting ... but I do not want to get into yet another rabbit hole. Already in too many rabbit holes of hobbies! So this week no slowstitching for me. Maybe next week again.
