In the new ending there is no Lancelot, there is just Lady of Shalott, half sick of shadows, and she finally says 'enough, this isn't life', so she takes her chances and looks straight at the real life and... Nothing happens. Turns out there was no curse, it was just a lie that people were telling her and then she was also telling herself. But she chose to break free and she did.
When you described the finished piece as feeling lovely and sturdy, stronger than before, it reminded me of the what the French artist Louise Bourgeois said: ‘The act of sewing is a process of emotional repair’. I am sure many of us know that to be true.
@@k3n.clothtales I just love how you and your viewers interweave snippets of knowledge back and forth through the comments. I get almost as much from the comments as I get from your videos. I also think we must all have degrees in wittering which of course means able to speak at length about trivial things, the small talk which creates a sense of community.
@@jennywren2395 yes! The loneliness reaches up, at times, to grab me by the throat an throw me down a warren hole of self pity where bad choices could be incubated when I reach out to “Our Community “. All better. Thank you friends I never met❤
I did laugh about your "man" comment. I have to hide my thoughts re man as I have 3 gorgeous sons, now all in their 50s. Between you and me, they can be daft creatures. Watching you weave reminds me of how I loved to darn socks. As a child it was a task Mum and I did in the evenings. When my sons and step sons were at high school they were forever wearing holes in their socks, running around with no shoes on. So I decided to darn their school socks thinking it might embarrass them into keeping their shoes on when out doors. It back fired on me because all their school mates thought darned socks were so cool. My boys, all 6 of them , brought their school friends socks home for me to darn. Which I dutifully did mainly because I found it so relaxing..❤ This is a PS. I thought about Ariadne who wove silken cobwebs and a story I only vaguely remember about a swans and a sister who had to weave nettles to break a spell which had turned her 9 brothers into swans. I think it was called the Swan Maiden. Perhaps it was a Grimms story?. One of the brothers was left with one wing because she didn't get the last shirt finished.Sir Lancelot wasn't a cad, at least not like the prince in the Little Mermaid. Although Lancelot did have a long love affair with Guinevere. Thank you for reminding me of the Lasy of Shalot. When I was 17 at teachers college I was a folk singer. At folk club there was a young woman with a terrible voice who would insist on warbling, horribly out of tune, every single verse of the lady of shallot. It was a hilarious agony. I think we could spend hours amusing each other with marvelous stories.×××
Wow cool story and you sound like a woman that would bring us together splitting outside's with laughter while stitching along and a cuppa beside us. Thank you for sharing x
I wish you lived near me I knit lots of socks but hate darning😂 the story is ‘the children of Lir’ it’s Irish, we were taught at school that the sister didn’t manage to free them but when Christianity came to Ireland the spell was broken. However there are lots of other versions🦢
You raised your sons so they are decent men. 😊 Someone else told me about a Canadian folk singer called Loreena McKinnett who sings the Lady of Shallot, I have found it on RU-vid, haven't listened to it yet ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7AhVNfHYPp8.htmlsi=DpwJJ2ZMyaKvazWs ♥️
Lovely project Kathryn thank you. Good luck with the new life chapter you are embarking upon. You know all of us, especially the “thumbs up “ brigade are right there with you. ❤
Beautiful! So meditative doing these lovely weaving stitches. Thank you for adding this to your spectacular journal! It is overflowing with amazing stitching and memories. Best wishes for your journey to France to tie up loose ends and bring your fur babies "home"! Hugs to you, you very strong, courageous and lovely lady🥰
Whenever I think of Odysseus returning home, I think about his faithful dog Argos and how he waited twenty years for his master's return and then died as he saw him pass by 😢 Obviously, for the story he would need to die so as not to ruin the beggar disguise by recognising him, but it still makes me want to cry at the thought of the dog's love and loyalty
Oh, this weaving is truly the star, it's lovely! This reminded me that years ago as I was listening to a weaver speak about the process, she said just remember "Weft to right" and it will help you remember left to right (and right to left) is the weft.
Dear Kathryn . I am in Bordeaux on holiday and have had too much wine and kir royale 🤣 but wanted to say you are a legend. Never stop doing you. We love you and wish you much peace and happiness in the future . Take care . 🥰
QUIRKY here Too! It feels so comfortable to count in odds 3-6-9……and even more in my preference to read a newspaper from back to front…..primitive wonkiness makes so many of us happy…..
Your version of the ending of the Lady made me very happy. If I dont like the ending of something I change it in my head too. Usually it's the destruction of a strong female character! She lives happily ever after in my 'headcanons'
I often get a little wave of pleasure when you mention stories and poems and tv shows or movies that you like, as I carry many of the same ones in my head and heart. The first time I came across James Herriot was when I was 17 or so, and a slightly older boy -- son of my mother's oldest friend, on whom I had a great crush -- was sitting in a chair laughing out loud. I'd never seen an adult laugh out loud at a book. It was James Herriot. I was instantly smitten with him, along with young John. Thank you for that lovely reminder of his books and the show, both of which I've enjoyed many times. And then there's Anne Shirley and The Lady of Shalott episode. Priceless. May you continue to weave your new life and new home into a lovely, flexible and solid (ish?) structure.
Katherine thank you so much for sharing this beautiful part of Dorset. It took me back to my trips with my best friend a few years ago. As for the wardrobe, well done you. I've been in a similar situation to yours and I fond if I take a deep breath, think and plan, anyway will be possible.❤
Love all of McKennitt's music. Have been lucky enough to see her in concert and to actually meet her! I was somewhat tongue-tied but she was very nice and answered my occasional awkward questions. I remember she remarked on how much she liked the old brooch of my Mom's I was wearing at the time 😁
Years ago I went to retreat house in Thirsk, Yorkshire and weaving was a therapy offered. And it certainly enabled the mind to relax. The therapies were carried out in the house next door which had been used for Mrs Pomfrey's house in the TV series of All Creatures Great and Small. It was good to be reminded.
I’d not heard “Get stood on” before. I love it! It brought to mind another “suggestion” I’ve not heard or used for years which is “Get knotted!” If I got told that by a fellow slowstitcher now, I‘d know I was in BIG trouble 😂. Wishing you lots of sunshine to banish those shadows 💛💛💛
Your weaving is so beautiful Kathyrn! I love it and am excited to try my hand at creating one. Praying you are doing well in France and enjoying your reunion with Stella and Fred Fred. ❤
Your color esthetic is so pleasing to me. ❤ I have recently discovered that all my curses have been self-imposed. I can't help but think that many women believe the lies others impose on us, and the lies become the warp and weft of our curse. So freeing to find they are merely shadows.
A dear little piece of weaving k3n. Thank you for the idea. I hope you are getting packed up ok in France. Fred Fred and Stella will be so pleased to see you. It will be very exciting to put up your favourite things in your new home. I've always lived in small spaces. I like to cosiness of them and I've always managed to make room for my handicraft supplies. Thank you for continuing with Mondays and Wednesdays, even though you have so many other things to think about.
Love the colors in the weave. Your strength to continue with all this YT stuff with all you have going on in your life. Shows your determination to continue to grow and sprout new roots.💙💚💛
@@cosmiccoyotedog-doreenb9605 thank you Doreen, the YT stuff and all of you have kept me going all year, I will be forever grateful for it and you all. ❤️
I live in New Zealand but was born in Bradford and went with my Aunt to the mill where she worked and tried my hand weaving it was fascinating watching the shuttle travelling across the loom.
looking forward to you getting back with Fred Fred and Stella and settling into your new home. it will be so nice to get everything moved and done there. please take good care Kathryn.
I’m so so happy knowing you are with your beloved Stella and Fred Fred once again k3n! Love needle weaving and it seems for all the same reasons as you- it hugely satisfying. I think those moments of noticing happiness and gratefulness for ‘the small things are called Glimmers . Noticing them is another step in solidifying new neural pathways ❤
I do love that little piece of needle weaving! It's so pretty. I think I could still recite the whole of Lady of Shalott because I was a nerdy girl interested in long narrative poems! I also managed to memorise quite a few of Alfred Noyes poems. In particular The Highwayman, which has a most lovely rhythm to it.
This is beautiful Kathryn! I would love to learn how to weave, but also have no space for a loom in my apartment. That said, there are many ways to weave without a loom. We love the original All Creatures Great and Small series, but I can't seem to remember the phone number either; just the Darrowby part. I hope all is well with you and your packing is going as planned. I know it's a lot of work and stress and emotions, but you will start to feel better once you get settled into your new home. Wishing you a safe journey back with Stella and Fred Fred.♥
Thank you Jacqueline, I did Google and it's Darrowby 385 . It's weird being here (not nice) but the packing is going ok and it's only a few more nights. ♥️
Loved this week! I recently started weaving on a small loom! I will definitely give this one a go again! Will be thinking of you and your trip back to France.
Dear Kathryn, I stopped by today for the weaving lesson, and stayed for the wittering 😂. Loved them both ❤❤. I was thinking my granddaughter might be able to learn the weaving. She's 8 and interested in sewing 😊. Peace and safety as you travel 🙏🏻
Thinking of you Kathryn ❤ Thank you for the prerecord and look after yourself; there's a freshly-painted cosy home ready for you, Stella and FredFred with lots of cloth tales and other tales still to be told there. Be kind to yourself. Not long now xxx
I loved this video. Your historical and fairytale stories are fascinating. Looking forward to seeing your new home. It sounds like you will heal and be happy there. I have two Batsford books and I too love running my hand over the covers! Lol ❤Beth B in Sarasota, FL
I love this so much. Can’t wait to try it. Hope your packing is going well and Fred Fred and Stella will complete the making of a new home for you. Wishing you the best, always.
Thank you so much, I have Stella and Fredfred back together, there was a moment or two of light wrestling and now it's as if they have never been apart. ☺️❤️
I loved the weaving of your words , ideas and themes almost as much as the thread weaving going on before my eyes. I stitched my “hanging by a thread” as I watched and listened today as I m a few weeks behind with stitching. Carol Ann Duffy wrote a book of poems, “The World’s Wife” ( Picador 1999) that places women’s perspectives on classical or well-known stories ( sometimes in extremely earthy language I feel I should say) . One of my favourites is “Mrs Midas”. Today’s theme and of course “hanging by a thread” link me to thoughts of the three fates of classical mythology , Clotho, Lachesis and Atroposis who had such a powerful mythic role in determining the weft and warp of human life. May your beloved Stella and Fred Fred be your dear comforts over the next days as you travel this next part of your journey and then the miles back to UK. Safe travels. With love to you dear Kathryn X
Kerstin Neumuller is a swedish artist/crafter that has looked a lot into band-weaving and small portable loom weaving. Simple tools and low entry but beautiful and useful results...She has written a book that has been translated into engish and is called "simple weave". Hope all is going well with your move!
Gorgeous! Looks like a magic carpet. I must have a go. I used to weave (rugs amongst other things) until my back couldn’t cope any more, but this tiny weaving looks entirely possible. My grandparents were Bradford weavers until they moved to look after my G-grandmother (tel. Morecambe 319). They say you’re only ever 6 degrees of separation away from connection to anyone else.
Thinking of you all weekend, K3N. Stella and Fred-Fred must be delirious with happiness to see you. Can't wait for all of you to inhabit your new home and settle into a delightful lifestyle of your own making. This little weave is perfect to express how we weave the past into the present to create our very own new. Actually, I would love a piece of this particular tweed to make something special.
@@annrubino6252 thank you Ann, Stella was delirious indeed, Fredfred hides his feelings better but the minute I sat down, he got on my lap and purred his head off! ❤️
Thinking about you on this Monday, our Labor Day holiday in the US. I hope your packing is going well, with Stella and Fred Fred's help!! Hugs and best wishes!! 💜🐾💟🐾 The slow stitch weaving and your shared thoughts - both lovely. Thanks!
Is this serendipity - I was busy listening to you as I sat in my garden, needle weaving (a rare summer day) and I decided to listen to an audiobook from my local library - Broken Light by Joanne Harris (her of Chocolat fame) - image my surprise when at the beginning of each chapter she quotes a few lines from The Lady of Shallot -wow - I then reached for a quick slurp of my cup of tea and URGH it was Cold...!!!
I love darning socks (the socks I knitted myself). So I loved this 'project' too. Mine was finished before the video ended! Probably because of thicker weft-threads.
Hello Kathryn. I was so surprised to hear you say hello to me! The school trousers turned out "perfect" according the the grandson who needed them shortening, so I was very pleased - and relieved that I had not made a mistake in the measuring and cutting!
Just starting to watch… my tiny house is 399 sq ft, so I’m getting a good idea of the size of your Tiny house. I have 3 room doors, but I’m not counting closet doors. It’s a challenge storing art supplies but, finger slippage, now editing. But there are lots of nooks and crannies to tuck. Then we did add a sun room, and that’s what I now use as an art room. It can be done, just calls for a little creative thinking which I know you have! Sending hugs for a safe trip!
Love the weaving , love your colors chosen , love the poetry . Julian of Norwich , “ All will be well , and all will be well and all manner of things will be well” quoted by TS Eliot . How did he get away with plagerism ?
I studied Eliot's the Wasteland for A level and it seems most of it 'references' (plagarises?) other works. At least I remember we had to learn about a myriad of other works in order to understand the Eliot. As an aside, his ashes are in East Coker, a village in Somerset not far from where I (will) live ❤️
I did Google in the end and the original number from the books and the first series with Christopher Timothy was Darrowby 385. I wonder why they changed it? 🤔❤️
Am looking forward to catching up with this upon my return from a month away. I'll be vastly behind at that point, but will relish every minute of your videos. Meanwhile, sending a big hug. ❤
Buongiorno, dovrò andare a vedere la biennale a Venezia alle corderie dell'Arsenale , mi dicono bellissime con tantissimi lavori di ricamo ,telaio , composizioni di tessuti .... finalmente una biennale fatta con le mani ☺️
My day was not going well and then I watched and listening to you thank you my day ended happy, love your stories. My father was from Baildon and worked for Lord Liverpool and we were three girls born in the Lincolnshire wolds 😊
I enjoy the way you tell stories. (re: Penelope) I refer to taking out stitches as reverse sewing. 😉 I never knew the story of the Lady of Shallot. I recognize now that one of my favorite fantasy authors (Patricia A. McKillip) used it as inspiration in her book, The Tower at Stony Wood. Cool! Is it Darrowby 2297? I think that's the number used in the more recent production of All Creatures Great and Small.
Thank you for the book reminder. I’ve retrieved my copy off my shelving and put at bedside to revisit. Reverse stitch is my name for undoing. I’m an expert at it sometimes🤪 Thank you for another great video and send you many best wishes. Men. On another b** planet at times.
As well as the fairy stories, several Greek myths have been written from the viewpoint of the women. It was a wonderful series using several very good female authors.
Lovely little piece. So many references to weaving. Family lives are woven together. Yes you do need to take up weaving, you do not nearly have enough to do. Have you noticed yet that you some times were off in your overs and unders and created a twill weave. Oh you clever little duck. The best to you.
I like your story ending much better than the original. When you said look up I was decoupaging sewing pattern paper on jar lids for button storage, it is so wonderful that we can all create together no matter what that means to each person. I will have to go on a search for materials in my supplies for this project, it turned out beautiful!❤
@@megantorri1711 that's lovely, I love to hear what you are all doing whilst watching (listening) I must remember to ask people to tell me in the next video I make ❤️
Living in a tiny house has always been my dream. I hope you will share pictures of your new home. Your 'man' comment was quite funny. I must totally agree... not totally sure why they are here??? 🤔 Your weaving art was very awesome. Safe travels!! Hugs ❤❤❤❤
Thank you for the hugs and good wishes, I will definitely share my new tiny house once all my stuff is in place. I even have a little 'before' video I took for Mum and the kids I might share as well. ❤️
And maybe when a woman looks at a man, she lets a bit, or sometimes a lot, of herself disappear. I appreciated this narrative and the weaving. Thank you.
Hi Kathryn, I just sent up a little prayer you, stay safe. Sending lots of love and hugs. I've been stitching along and I promise I did look up to see you see. Lol love Bella xx
wasn't it Burl Ives who sang "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly?" Anyhow, that's neither here nor there. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. Truly inspiring!
I so enjoy watching your videos and listening to your stories Kathryn. Just a thought to remember warps and wefts - weft to the left. And I wondered if you could use a small comb as a beater perhaps... Thank you for the hours of pleasure you give us every week. I hope your journey to and from France is as stress free as it can be (and of course, your time there too). ❤❤❤
