When I was a young woman I sometimes took 3-day-3-night bus rides, reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings all the way. When the bus stopped for breaks I had to pull myself out of wonderful Middle Earth to deal with the noise and flatness of this or that gas station and bathroom line-up. Very strange. I could hardly wait to pick up my book again. When my children came along, I introduced them to Middle Earth too, and all of them love/d them as much as I do. May your new home be, indeed, a cure for weariness, fear and sadness. 💚

Welcome home and may it be a place of peace and healing. Bravo to your Uncle Ralph for his careful lessons in boating with his young niece. Here’s to many happy times for you, Stella and FredFred in your new home! It’s not surprising that tales from your childhood got you emotional. I’m a wreck sometimes when I speak of happy times but simultaneously remember that people I loved are no longer here. As to you forgetting feather stitch, you should see me every time I try to do blanket stitch. My language is not lady like. ☺️ Take care. 🧡

Dear Kathryn, everything you say is interesting - boiler, cooker, whatever it is, you can tell us if you want to... Really enjoyed your beach hut reminiscences, remembering bathers, camping and seashore smells from my own childhood summers. I loved hearing the pride in your voice when you told us about navigating out of the creek under sail. The taste of fresh-caught mackerel! And eaten off melamine plates! Gardening comments also very welcome. All these things make links between us all. And I have often thought about why women (in my experience) often tell each other about the things they have done that day - the washing up, the laundry, getting a stain out, and so on, and in some detail. I have the idea that it gives us a sense of being visible, of existing and of not being alone in our scratting about at home trying to make things clean/tidy/pleasing to us. I think this is because I have always felt the need to do this kind of thing when I have been mostly in the house on my own. Your biodiverse lawn - something to be celebrated, perhaps? Sending an extra hug as you spend your first week in your new home.

Hope you slept well, with a bed full of Stella and Fred-Fred ❤❤❤. I loved your story about learning your skills from your dad. I wonder if it is our age, because my dad did the same thing. He was a long-distance lorry driver and loved tinkering with engines so I also learned how to take out a mini engine (they were put in crosswise!), change a tire and rope a load amongst other things 😂 I still try to figure out how to do things for myself and I thank my dad for never thinking a girl couldn't or shouldn't know how to do those things.

Welcome home lovely. Well done! I loved your stories about your Uncle Ralph and fishing at sea. My lovely boating Uncle was called Uncle Clack. He could whistle us home from around the bays at Ngunguru where my paternal family came from . My favorite cousin, Brent and I would go out fishing in the dingy . We used long lines too. My favorite childhood photo, a black and white box brownie photo, is of Brent and I after fishing. We were 9. I have a huge straw hat on and my red spotted rompers with a white peasant blouse. Brent is bare chested and very brown and has tucked from the belt of his shorts about eight fish we caught that day. I remember thinking how wonderful he was. My hero. It's been a long time since I have been to the sea and I miss the smell of the ocean and the cry of gulls. I am a very keen gardener and still struggle out for half an hour to an hour most days to work in the garden. I used to have a large vege garden in raised beds. Now I just grow herbs and in summer salad greens, tomato's and cucumbers. I have a tiny lawn. Well, two tiny lawns really that I call my pocket handkerchiefs . The lawn daisies are flowering at present, because Spring has arrived.the lawn will soon be decorated with yellow and white "confetti" which are tiny, fallen blossoms from my frangipani tree. By the way I live in Cambridge very near to Hobbiton. It is gorgeous. Arohanui from me in Aotearoa New Zealand. Xxx

What a sweet looking house. This has brought lots of emotions today. My brother just moved to a new home last month in the mountains near me (a real fixer-upper). We have had 4 walks already, two per day. 😁 No butter on Fredfred's paws, though I have heard of it. I think the theory is that once they have had a good wash, they feel at home. 😁 Hello spent the first day in the top of the wardrobe sleeping then the first night roaming about the place. Hello was calmer today, he just napped on the sofa and occasionally patrolled the windows to see what was going on outside. Hello seems fine when Stella and I go for a walk though I keep it to half an hour. He comes running when he hears us coming in but he has always greeted me when I come home. ❤️

I have an excess of hobbies but the main 2 are sewing and gardening, so I appreciate the garden talk! I've been lowering my food growing footprint and raising my wildlife support footprint steadily over the years. I've got a stack of native wildflower seed packets waiting for the weather to turn cool and wet. I'm in the US, in the pacific northwest, which has some similarities to much of England's climate. You have the native yellow rattle! That's an excellent way to naturally reduce your grass. You truly can garden anywhere. I'm envious of the culture of gardening in the UK!

Hello, K3n. I so enjoyed your story about boating with your Uncle Ralph. I have similar memories of my younger days on Martha’s Vineyard (an island off Massachusetts, US), where my dad was born and raised. He and my uncle built a small summer home for us on an inlet, and I remember eating meals with the smell of the sea filling the days and nights. We lived in New York, on Long Island, just a short walk to the ocean, but being on vacation in MV was even more special. My brother and I spent many happy summer days boating and fishing, digging for quahogs (clams), and catching crabs to sell on the side of the road. Once, we even sold them to a police officer, who we thought was pulling over to give us a ticket for not having a permit. He was very excited to get fresh crabs for 50 cents each! Haha And those sweet memories make me emotional, too, now that I’ve lived long enough to have substantial losses in my life. By the way, the Feather Stitch is my favorite stitch. I have used it many, many times, and I always have to stop and think about it before I begin! Your house block is lovely.

Home is a wonderful place! I am so grateful to have a place I can call home. Many people nowadays don’t have homes and it’s sad. I love my little home. It is my place of peace and joy and I am looking forward to creating my little wonky home with fabric this week. I love your little wonky home Kathryn. I especially love the flowers growing.

I love how you took a wonky little house and stitched it into a beautiful home. Here’s to your new real life Rivendell … life imitating art imitating art ? Looking forward to a virtual tour when you are settled.

I hope you’ll share your park home with us, though I know that may be a lot to ask. You have been so generous with your time and heart. ❤️❤️❤️

I think I will share some little videos, perhaps of some home improvement, DIY type projects. Not all sewing related but very likely 'wonky'. 😁❤️

I am thinking I might share some little videos of both house and garden projects with you, if you would be interested. Not all stitching related but just how I do things. Spoiler alert, usually wonky. 😁❤️

I have never found a job that takes the time I think it should when decorating or deep cleaning, it's always longer but very satisfying when finally finished because you can see the difference. I'm sure Stella and Fred Fred will soon make it home for you all. Very glad to know you're home safely. 😊

Welcome home Kathryn, I hope you are beginning to settle in to your new home and that all three of you will be happy and make new memories together. I really love the stories that you tell us, it reminds me of when my youngest son used to ask me to tell him stories and now my grandson likes to hear them. It's really heart warming to be left such precious memories that will stay with us always. Take care and wishing you all the very best in your new home ♥️😘xx

Nothing better than fresh fish (I like trout) pan fried in butter. Haven’t had it in many years as my grandfather was the one who fished. Thanks for bringing back that memory. Your wonky house is quite interesting. Hoping all is well with you, Stella and Fredfred in your new tiny home.

I'm so happy you're HOME safe with Fred Fred and Stella 🤎 ... And I'm sure some wonderful "things" (like love, laughs, good time and happy memories!) will grow from the seeds you planted in front of "Wonky House"... Take good care of the 3 of you, much love and hugs🤎

In 1996, I turned 40 and walked away from a dominate marriage. After two months of signing the papers I went boat hitchhiking - from Seneca Lake (NY) through the canals, up to Montreal. And then I took a bus and caught a boat to Anticosti Island. I would not recommend that these days, but it was completely freeing. I never again had to get permission. Never again looked for approval. Still now I am exploring what I like, who I like… Please yourself and your doggies. Don’t go boat hitchhiking, but do something crazy and fun. ❤ Love your work!

A few years ago I threw a packet of wildflower seeds in an old half-barrel and a lovely tiny flowered aster grew the first year and now it has left the barrel and overtaken a large patch of the yard. I want to remove it but at this time of the year, when the sun is shining it is covered with different types of bees, wood bees, carpenter bees, honey bees, bumblebees, and other insects getting ready for winter so I can’t pull it out. I do prune it a bit so I can still access the rest of the yard. I think it may be invasive, lol. Hope you reached home okay and everyone is settling in. TFS
