Sly Spy Arcade conversions compared from Amstrad CPC through to the Commodore Amiga. OGDuffy looks at the arcade original game of Sly Spy or Secret Spy as some may know it, by Item and then gives his verdict on the best home conversions.
Firstly we take a look at the arcade original game of Sly Spy / Secret Spy by Item, which was a popular arcade game that inevitably received a home conversion onto the many home systems of the day.
Following this visit to the arcade classic we then delve into the home console versions of the day namely the home computer version including the 16 Bit and 8 Bit home computer systems of the day.
The 16 Bit home computer systems I'm looking at are the Commodore Amiga and its rival the Atari ST.
And finally, the usual suspects known as the classic 8 bit computer systems from the day featuring the classic Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and the Amstrad CPC.
So which version of Sly Spy / Secret Spy by Item will win my verdict for the 16 Bit home arcade conversions and the the 8 bit arcade home conversions?

Wow. This clearly passed me by back in the day. I used to look forward to arcade conversions, there was more than enough crap that outweighed the decent stuff. Bomb Jack was decent on the C64 it even had a ripped off Jean Michel Jarre soundtrack, as did many a C64 game. Good video OG hope your all well 👍

Was wondering if you were ever familiar or could mention and do a video on a arcade clicker this was a device popular in the late 80s early 90s using a electric gas lighter opened up a electrical current was sent through the machine coin slot which give a credit I witnessed people accumulating over 80 free credits using this device on particular machines Keep up the good work 👍🏼

Nice and entertaining comparison, as always, thank you for making it :) As for the verdict, for once I feel like none of the conversions really cut it. The Amiga vereion could have been great if only it was faster and with better follision detection. The ST version could have been great if only it had a better sounrtrack. The CPC version cpuld have been great if only it had any audio... Meanwhile, I find that both the Spectrum and the C64 versions suffer from their respective systems' graphical limitations. I don't know if it's just me, but on the Spectrum conversion I sometimes find it hard to actually spot the enemies since they tend to totally blend with the background. The C64 is probably the best conversion here, but to me, with its limited color palette it loses much of what makes the charm and atmosphere of the original: those crisp, bright, colorful graphics. All in all, I think this game really should be enjoyed in its arcade form, nine of the home conversions really do it justice.

Hi matey agree about the Speccy comment and a common problem with some of the conversions and games in general matey😉 The Amstrad showed promise but unfortunately missed the sound which was a real shame as could have been an excellent conversion otherwise 😎🍺

Versus videos are always entertaining 😁 this was a New game for me, not sure if i'v ever even heard about this, but now i really want to try it. I really do like my commodore 64, just played today a game called: Snoopy on my c64, it was a game i'v never played so i gave it a go. Very simple game indeed it was, but it's just so much fun trying games That never tried before. Is silkworm versus still coming at some point? Or do i remember wrong, that you mentioned it in comments at some point 🙈 take care and see you in the next one 🍺🤘😎 while writing this i just heard that Carl weathers has passed away. R. I. Great video! I bought this for the switch recently, but oddly actually preferred the C64 version which I got as a present to go with my 1541, which wasn’t long before I went 16 bit. The Amstrad version looks great there, was quite common for Amstrad games to be sparse in the sound department, think 1 reason was it used to use up quite a bit of cpu time to play music unlike the c64 custom chips.

Looks to me like, for each platform, it would've been a good game to have in your collection. Some platforms might have had even better, but they all look like something a person would've been happy with if they only had one computer they could play it on.

Must've been really hard to pick between the CPC and the 64, they each seemed to have their strengths and weaknesses. The graphics seemed better on the CPC to me, which is rare.

Glad you came over to the commodore pal!!! I was unlucky enough to get a c16 for two years and begged my dad for a c64
@nrich99999
@nrich99999 6 месяцев назад
Same here. I really wanted a C64 too. A few of my friends had them and it was THE computer to have at the time. I begged Mum for a C64, but I got the C16 instead. Was my first computer. However, it could have been worse......(I've already told OG this story before... Hehe!). Shortly before the Christmas that I got the C16, I and my younger brothers were left in the car for a few mins whilst Mum went in a shop or something. Anyway, messing about in the car whilst Mum was gone, we managed to pull the back seats forward, revealing the contents of the boot. There was a used Commodore Vic 20 in there!!!!! 🫣 We shut the seats back up and stayed silent for a moment. But, I couldn't help myself......I just had to tell Mum that I'd 'accidentally' found it and ask her if it was mine. Mainly because I was filled with CRIPPLING disappointment if that Vic 20 was destined for me, when I really really wanted a C64. 😭 The Vic 20 is literally nothing next to a C64. I knew that much. Anyway, it didn't go well. Mum went mad! 🤬 Shouted at me for looking in the boot and told me to mind my own business as to who or where it was destined for. So, I spent weeks, thinking I was gonna get a used Vic 20 for Christmas but still kept asking for a C64. On the day, I got to my final and main present which was 'computer shaped', and began with trepidation to unwrap it. All awhile preparing to be let down by opening up a Vic 20. But, to my surprise and disappointment at the same time, it was a brand new C16 instead. 🫤 I thought for just a second that it WAS an actual C64 too..... As I was opening it. 😢 Then I realised it was a C16. I had barely even heard of them. Might have seen one at a home store once? I hadn't paid it any attention - I wanted a C64. 🤔 Despite my childhood 'know nothingness', It didn't take long for me to realise, that this C16, was not anything like a C64 and crucially, couldn't play C64 games. 😭 Although, limited as the system was, it was exponentially better than a Vic 20. Anyway, I made the most of it because that's all I had. It was ok..... I did have some games that were really fun and challenging and I did spend many many hours playing it. Luckily, I only had to put up with it for just one year, because the following Christmas I finally got a shiny new C64..... Probably something to do with the thousands of times over the course of the year that I still kept on about actually wanting a C64...lol. And the funny thing? The Vic 20 we found in the boot of the car was never seen again. I have no idea where it went or what happened to it. 🤔🤯❓

With how slow the Amiga version is, I find myself wondering - is it maybe developed for NTSC and the PAL conversion didn't change the framerate of the play, just the copper lists and such?
@deathybrs
@deathybrs 6 месяцев назад
Might be worth in the future switching to NTSC and seeing if that fixes timing issues... I would've said that would apply to ST and 64 too. Probably not so much the CPC or the Speccy since neither of those had much NTSC presence, so it seems unlikely that would do much.

@deathybrs 6 месяцев назад
@@OGDuffy Understandable... I'm not 100% certain it was slow due to shoddy work, but that's really neither here nor there, as the PAL conversions should still be better. That said, I've done gamedev on a lot of platforms, and it is actually really hard to do a GOOD job targeting both video standards. A LOT harder on the 64 than the Amiga, though.

Enjoyable enough arcade game . The amiga version looks nice but just really slow so spoilt the fun, considering the control panel takes up a third of the screen this aint good enough The atari st version had smaller control panel , faster gameplay and even added parallax on the second level that was missing in the amiga version Had the c64 version back in the day , again some good graphics and Parallax scrolling too . Good chance Tim follin soundtrack too C64 the best for me
