Killer Gear Less than $100: imp.i114863.ne...
The Shure SM57 is possibly the most widely known microphone in musical history. Getting its start all the way back with some of the first Shure engineers in 1937 under the Unidyne name. It's hard not to recognize the greatness this mic has captured in some of the records that changed music history. But it's somehow easy to overlook this mic. It's just so common. We’ve seen it so many times. It's been around as far back as most of us can think. Which begs the question.
Is the Shure SM 57 still relevant? Can it not only be relevant. But handle recording a band. All on its own? That's what Luke (drummer) and I look at in this video. We put the Shure SM57 through its paces recording drums, recording electric guitars, and even vocals.

I was co-owner of a little 4 track studio in Brooklyn in the 70s. Among the things we purchased on our pooled charge cards were a half dozen SM57s and a couple of direct boxes. We chose the SM57s over SM58s because the 57s were 10 bucks cheaper than the 58s. We made some beautiful recordings in that studio with no other mics. I have many expensive mics these days (50 years later) and I sold my studio in Brooklyn in 1978 and moved to Florida, but I still have one of those SM57s from 50 years ago, and it's still an excellent mic.

Thats awesome. I would love to get my hands on a real vintage 57, back when they were unidyne... and put it up against a newer one just to see the differences. Just for my own curiosity!

I had two SM57s in my backpack when I was hitchhiking the U.S. I got a ride in Cheyenne, Wyoming from a guy delivering an RV somewhere east. He had already picked up a runaway Amish kid who told me he wanted to go into radio announcing. I got dropped off in Columbus, Ohio. When I checked my backpack, one of my SM57s was missing.

I’d like to see some videos on different mixes of the same tracks. Like a tutorial on making a mix more indie vs more pop sounding or rock sounds utilizing the same source material. And then maybe how you might record differently to achieve these types of sounds in the tracking phase.
@RecordingStudioLoser
@RecordingStudioLoser 3 года назад
Oh that interesting. Super difficult. But I like it! It would have to be like one tune. Reimagined a few ways during tracking. Mixing the same thing differently is possible but not really a method I subscribe to. You could get in the ball park but you’d be forcing the sound. Instead of the track leading you to the mix. Good idea!

having recorded for 50 years (cough), I think this is the place for most people to start. You may not want to record a symphony orchestra on two am57's....would be a fun test. I doubt most people could not tell -except audiophiles. I have much more expensive capacitor mics and well, you get into like a (pick your brand...all good) AT4040 or whatever brand, and you are at your HOME studio, you have to deal with' the room noise. I like this video so much because its focuses on RECORDING...not equipment, very well done. Ok, If one of us was lucky enough to land in a big studio, like abbey road or Sunset Sound or whatever, well, let the engineers handle it. For us home studio people starting out, if you can't get something listenable with a SM57, do research and test before you "move up". The problem with any condenser mic is if your room is not prepared you pick up the A/C or heat in the vent or whatever. The song is the thing. I just recorded a fun song for a friend, i thought why bother with like RODE (I like RODE), with a SM57 (or SM58) less room noise. and can most people tell? NOPE. Now if i had a real female singer and this was going to be a demo, I'd prob use the RODE. but still....might not matter. THE Sennheiser 831's (i think) are really great too, more high end. like a Sennhesier 845 ect. if you watch NBC football games, they have moved over to those. Does it really matter for us? NO. Just a thought. My fave is the EV EV RE20, but thats only because critical listening. I remember in the 80 , i did a project with them. and afterwards i thought, hell, could of used a sm57/58 I wish you new recording people here the best! Remember Manufactures thing (rightly so) is to sell the latest and greatest..... But i ain't a SM57/8 "Is best"....I am just saying if you are just starting out....good starting point. Just a great video. I do think Shure 58/57's need a good preamp (like I have), but clearly on this video....its words great. Hey get a damn tom tom. LMAO LMAO LMAO. THANKS Bill

Should i get one or two sm57's? I want to record what I hear when playing electric guitar and singing - I can currently record fine with my setup, but I dont want to record direct vocals and direct guitar - I want to record the sound I hear when playing live in a garage studio (like a room mic i guess)

I don't own a 57 but have used them very often! And durable!! Our tailgait was down driving from one gig (local) but the mic case came out and smashed open on the highway. 2 of them got ran over and the other 3 were just tossed all over the highway and here's the deal.....I had to resolder ONE WIRE on one mic and they all still worked and sounded good!!! Definitely need to get another one of these bad boys!
@georgecovetskie6717

I always been an equipment freak. The funny thing is, way back when I started playing with other musicians and starting up bands (ok, 1975 first band) I was new to the audio end of things and went with the standard. Everyone had an Sm58 and an Sm57. I fooled around with recording rehearsals and the 1st mic I found that did prety good was the 57's. I bought 2 of them back then. I still have 1 of those 2 today! It still works after years of abuse, storage, last min gig issues, etc. So as for dependability, it rocks. Strange how it still sits in my mic case just for emergencies. As for its sound quality, i think it is just working well. It will never replace a high-end recording mic, but it still sits in many a studio I recorded in, just in case.

Would appreciate if you subscribed to the channel A little bit of equalization gets the drums banging. But what I have noticed is if you start hitting the cymbals like you mean it then there is kind of chance the higher frequencies of the cymbals to take over your recording. That's my take.

I use a video micro with a deadcat on it for recording loud live musical performances at bars in Nashville and it surprisingly does really well. Great video, bro! I completely agree with the premise of the video and the possibilities of the SM57. I also appreciate the history of the mic. But, I've always disliked the SM57 and SM58. It's always been my opinion that you can get a much better-sounding microphone for the same price as either. But, that is just my opinion. I'm definitely not saying they are bad microphones and I'm not trying to be a hater. And, perhaps none of those other microphones would fit in all of those applications as well. So, my opinion is probably flawed. But, I am not limited to one microphone, so I do not own one. I also understand that this really has nothing to do with the video in general. Just sharing my thoughts.
@RecordingStudioLoser
@RecordingStudioLoser 2 года назад
That’s totally valid. What mics at that price point do you turn to? I wanna put them through the paces
@MitchellWilsonII
@MitchellWilsonII 2 года назад
@@RecordingStudioLoser There are so many good mics at that $99 price point. If we're talking direct comparisons to the SM57 the first mic that comes to mind is the Lewitt MTP440 it has a lot more body and warmth. I have several in my kit and I love to use them on amps and pretty much any application that you'd usually use an SM57. I do wind up rolling off the low mid a bit with the MTP440 if I need something to cut through the mix, but it's nice having it when you want it. And, the SM57 just doesn't have it. I would also take a look at the ATM650, it's a solid performer that I believe rivals the SM57.

Sounded awesome! No really a fan but you could also employ the Dave Grohl drum recording technique. He will play separate takes like one with kick and snare then a second will just be the tom fills then a third for all the cymbals to keep the mic bleed. If you have the time and the room isn't treated that may be another way to get good drum recordings with one mic.

What about recording a live band? It doesn’t sound to good by using only a phone. What do you recommend?
@RecordingStudioLoser
@RecordingStudioLoser 4 года назад
That’s getting into some more difficult situations. There a lot of 1 mic series videos on RU-vid that use the AEA R88 which I have and have thought about trying to lake a video on. (We’ll see). Either way recording live band with one mic depends more on the placement of the individuals playing rather than mic itself.

Use a zoom q2n 4k to record a live band. For $150 it sounds phenomenal and can fit in your pocket.
@BoboButYouCanCallMeTom
@BoboButYouCanCallMeTom 4 года назад
Use either a Zoom or a stereo microphone or maybe even a figure 8 or Omni and make sure the band plays in balance. The only way to get the band to sound good with one mic is to have a really fucking good band haha.

The video series is an exercise in if you had one mic. could you do it. The 57 being one of the most affordable ones out there it seemed like a natural choice. I went back a bad watched the video and couldn’t find where I said that. Either way. Saying I dig this mic isn’t to put down any other mic. We’ve done a few of these one mics in different price points. It’s just a fun exercise.

@@RecordingStudioLoser First of all: KUDOS. I really like your vids and I appreciate your effort in doing so. But - if you choose a headline "SM 57: If you only had ONE MIC (To record your ENTIRE BAND!)" you choose a statement. And exectly the same statement was made by another guy and studio engineer here on YT - I guess his name was Ronan Murphy or something like that. OK - I confess that I hate the SM57/58 as the coloration is just too much and the frequency response is a joke in comparison to the 201 - for example. And as I´m not a guitar player or drummer I can´t see any reason why I should waste 100 bucks for this mic. By the way - if I had to make a series like this and if I had to consider an affordable price range I would choose the M88 or the SM81. And I would tell the folks that they can´t expect a cheap mic for 100 bucks to be a real good and versatile one. If I want to play a real fat Moog sound I have to buy a Moog - same goes for Hammond, Leslie, Prophet and all the other sound sources. And the same goes for mics imho. But that´s only my experience as a prof. musician and non-engineer. Different question: What do you think about the Soyuz 013 FET? i would love to try the omni capsule but can´t find any dealer where I could check it out.

I’m sure he used them… but I know he didn’t use them for everything. He was a big fan of U47s. He definitely used a lot of expensive stuff. I’d say the guy was trying to make a sale. Which is a shame. The sm57 is great. There’s no need to lie for it.
