The gritty hammerstones clean through overstrike and also do well on dull edges, so it’s more forgiving than it appears. I brush the plate irk or edge w rhe hammerstone to get a feel for the contact area on the stone and test the edge so that really helps.
Awesome video! Reminds me of when I was learning with small hammer stones and mostly working leftover flakes and spalls from knap ins. Small stones are always fun! Great video and beautiful knapping as always.
Just rub some silica dust in that skin fracture, that will heal it well. 🤣 Great chipping as usual Marty! I just had rotator cuff surgery last year and I can't wait to get back at practicing with my hammer stones and bone. I'm in the middle of transitioning over from copper, fun journey!
Great Video, Marty. I have some rocks I picked up at the Crater of Diamonds state park that looks very similar to your agate. I haven't used small hammer stones on it - looks like something I should try. Thanks for posting the video.
You’re welcome john. Getting a bunch of different grit and small shapes and knocking around is fun. There are different rules for collecting in state parks, so make sure you don’t bring buckets and get in trouble.
I get what you’re saying about collecting rocks - the great thing about the diamond mine, the $10 entry fee allows you to carry out a 5-gal bucket of washed gravel or in my case, a bucket of knapping stones. 😊
