This is such a cool little guitar amp! I was really impressed with the clean and mid-gain tones from this tiny, but feature packed, 20 watt "desktop" amp. The Valeton TAR-20G Asphalt costs only $125 but might be a perfect clean guitar recording amp. Nice, clean, crisp, Fender like tones. What do you guys think?
The guitar I'm using for this demo is the incredible, new Wolf Guitars S1, from All In One Guitars. Maple, walnut, ash, neck-through construction.

I tuned in 32 minutes after you posted this review, and did something i never do - made an impulse buy! Ordered it, said i would get it April 23rd - it came yesterday! Plugged it into my Harley Benton cab, it is amazing. Thanks for your great reviews - they`re addictive 😁

Sounds amazing. I have been looking at getting smaller gear for less money . I have a Hotone nano amp and was looking to get another one with better clean tone when I noticed these . I see they are made by the same company (sonicake, Hotone, valeton) so I was interested , now I'm sold...great video exactly what I needed to hear. As always love your videos!🤘

What Max does really helps guitar players find great gear for not a lot of money. A great example is this Valeton Head. After seeing the demo on it, I am definitely buying one ... now. Thank you Max.

Yeah, Valeton is a great company with amazing products for great prices i had a Valeton dapper dark mini when i got my first guitar as a metalhead. I got it used in perfect condition for 50 bucks and it was more than i needed. Now i own a Boss katana 50 so i didn't need it anymore ánd sold it so someone else will have the privilege to use it and have fun !! this one also sounds amazing! oh i still have my Valeton rushead Metal pocket amp and i use it all the time when i am away for few days from home and i always get my guitar with me to learn and practice you should try it and review it. I connected it with a cable to a 6-year-old JBL small Bluetooth speaker i had and record me playing with a 120 buck Epiphone on my Mobile Samsung 6 edge. and people couldn't believe their ears hahahahaha that is how good the tone and sound of this little thing is! Sorry for the big msg. ! Rock on!!

When space is an issue, this sounds like a really nice amp! I really like the tones you got out of it, Max. I also like the straight forward, simple to use design. Would be very nice to hear some very cool blues played through it with an ES-335 style guitar or maybe even something rich and fat like a LP! I've book marked this amp for possible future purchase. When I tell my wife that I'm going to buy an amp, she says, "Where are you going to put?" I can tell her in my pocket. Can't wait to see the look on her face! 👍😊🎸😎

My favorite SS is a CUBE, any CUBE. Reverb, delay, etc. built in and "amp mods". Even the smallest mini cube is great; I've got five of them. They have a unique 'bassy" lead tone that no other amp has. I can even get a "push the string harder..." to get some breakup out of them like a tube amp. Get em used on Craigslist dirt cheap. Always (every single time so far), people buy them and never use them. High quality, dirt cheap, it don't get no better.

For something bigger, try the Boss Katana line. Same company, basically the same algorithms.

@@ImprobableJoe I played the Katana Artist 100w combo and I will tell you this it produces some of the best sounds I have ever heard come out of a solid state. The cab design and Waza speaker gives it an edge over the regular Katana 100w. But it is about 200 bucks more but if you play them side by side you will opt for the artist for sure. I will also say this the Blackstar Silverline is pretty amazing as well you dial in some 6v6 tones with a classic crunch gain and a little reverb and delay rock-a-billy for days. But you aren't going to find any of those for 130 bucks.

Great sounding little amp! Small enough to squeeze onto a pedal board and have an all in one, ready to gig, rig. Just feed it to the front of the house. I didn't catch the cab used, 1x12? Thanks for the vid, Max, always dig 'em!

I have this mini amp myself ... I've got to agree with Max ... the clean tones are AMAZING! I tried the dirty settings, but it's not quite right at the moment. I still prefer my mini CUBE as my pre-amp.

Hello there, sorry to bother you! Since you have one, would you be able to tell me if the volume knob is for the power section? Or is it for the preamp section? I intend to get one and use it only as a power amp, conection my other preamp in the return jack.

Like the vid and the amp. I have a Vox MV50 Clean, which is even smaller. No effects loop, reverb, or aux in, but it does have a built in power soak I can dial in to full power, 1/10 full power, or 1/100 full power. I tend not to use it as my main amp but I throw it in my gig bag as a backup, and it actually saved the day once. I think bass players have been hiding the wonders of these little class D amps for a while.

Could be the reluctance of old timey guitar players (who probably are the biggest spenders) to try and push the small style amps back in the past as "transistors are awful". Thankfully tech has improved alot since the og pod/crate 150watt mini head days and the next gen players are not digital adverse, which allowed for these fun tools (and backsavers) to exist.

I have this one and it's bass brother and the sound is really impressive for the money. If you have different cabinets to plug it in to there is hardly any limit to the sound you can get out of it. Love it, well, love them both actually.

Seems like it would make a great pedal platform. I like how portable it is. I'd need to test it out with my gear before I'd commit to running with it, but from your demo, it really does look like a viable low-cost option.

Oh man I am so glad I watched this review, I was looking for a compact amp with good clean tones that has a send and return so I can loop in all the pedals I need for all tonal effects and then just cut them and come back to a pure clean tone if I need to. We don't need large tube amps in our minimal home studios, 20W is well good enough through say a good 212 cab or even a nice celestion 112, it's going to be perfect for your situation. Like some of the comments below I have just bought one of these on your recommendation! Although I have several great tube amps, portable little amps like this interest me a lot. I have a Vox MV50 Clean, which I love. I may have to get one of these as well to check it our. My only concern is the power rating. 20w into 8ohms probably means about 10w into 16ohms. Neither is all that much power (SS amp power ratings are fiction at best). And since it has a gain control, I am guessing that the clean tones don't give you full volume on the amp either. I suspect it isn't loud enough for band rehearsals and jams. But it did sound really nice.

I received one when 1st came out,as they cut me a insane deal under $100 n I love it w high end headphones,can play all hours of the night***& I haven't noticed b it ever get hot even when pushed,like to get lil more vol though, I need to score a 10" cab that's small so amp can set on top...there cool well built n so far mines over year + old never has failed,the digital reverb(delay) sounds suprising very good for practice n through the ex cab. Give it a try if ya can score a good deal..fits easily in gig bag wvall my effects I use ,wah,of,phaser,chorus,fuzz, compressor, huge sound from a brick sized amp...hope they built to last in a competitive gear market

Very good revue Max, I agree it excels in the clean sounds and a nice reverb. As you need to add the cost of a decent cab to match the total cost would probably be more than popular ss amps such as Katana , Marshall code ect..

I bought this on the back of your video. Really impressed with it so far, great sounding cab sim when using headphones, not something you can say for other amps I own. Can’t wait to try it with my audio interface and pedals and a decent cabinet. The only problem now is I want to buy the bass amp version!

I agree it has a great sound and some range from clean to dirty too. It would make a good back up for small gigs beings it takes up no space when room in your vehicle is limited. Also it makes a good practice amp with a small cab. The problem with putting it on a pedal board is having to always bend down to adjust it.

I make little guitar cabs, and sell them, using the Valeton to audition them. When folks ask about the head, I say it’s just a rinky-dink Chinese solid state thing, which is true. It really helps sell the speakers! After a while, you may get bored of the tone, but for the price, the digital reverb and gain/eq settings are SO good at modeling tube saturation/overdrive/compression/crunch of a much pricier amp.

I bought the bass version of this back when they were on sale so I could get the guitar into a bass amp sound and it works really well for that. It's definitely worth looking into since the bass version has only two videos of it on youtube. The Valeton Coral Amp sim pedal is also worth looking into since two or three of the amps it models aren't available in any modeling software. With both of them together, you can cover almost every type of amp sound.

Thanks, Maxx ! I think that the LP you buried would sound good through it, about 2/3 up on the volume and tone knobs on the guitar. You might know this trick, but for better blues tone, get you some cheap, dark sunglasses, or does that add soul ? Play with those on, it really changes your tone ! I'm still trying to get a firefly 338; looking forward to the Monoprice video, though !

I have one. I couldn't bear to part with it! The cleanest amp I own. Fantastic for a practice amp. I'm using a repurposed Fender Frontman 15 G as a speaker cab. with an 8" Warehouse speaker. PERFECT match! And pedals do good in the loop. Never gigged with it, but it's quite at home in the bedroom as a practice amp.

Be worth buying for the clean sound alone. I really liked how dynamic it was, it really reacted well to changes in picking intensity. But having the nice gain tones was really surprising. Not boxy or flat..just a slightly compressed warm crunch that sounded like an amp rather than a practice amp.

It would be nice to see how this takes pedals, and some chord work with a clean Strat. The effects loop is a nice touch as well. I'm loving the small amp world - I have the Milkman Amp pedal and now all of my recording setup fits on my desk.

Max I would have to say for the more clean stuff that really sounds good. The question I would have is how does it perform using the fx loop? Could it really withstand the abuse of being an implementation to a pedal board? One thing that was impressive is it had a warmth to its tone that customarily you only get from valve style amplifiers; it didn't sound muddy. I know that solid state has really come a long way over the past 10 to 15 years and modeling amps have closed the gap even further yet with tube replication technology. So in an era where the Boss Katana, Roland Blues Cube, and Fender Tone Master has set new standards for solid state performance it makes you wonder if more companies haven't found similar mojo and been able to bring it to market in a more compact and wallet friendly package? Good stuff sir.

I have this amp and a Hotone British Invasion Nano amp sitting on top of a Randall RG8 cabinet in my bedroom for practice, the TAR amp sounds like a blackface Fender.

Nice little amp! Maybe you could A-B a couple different cabs/speakers sizes.. and ...try to relax that picking hand a bit and vary the attack on the strings for the blues....
