Small boat in big waters - Taking my 16'7" Lund Rebel into the Chesapeake Bay

Taking my Lund 1650 Rebel XL on a trip in the Chesapeake Bay. Didn't see many videos of smaller boats on the Chesapeake Bay (although there's another Lund guy!) so I decided to make one of my own.
Launched at Sandy Point State Park. First to Sandy Point lighthouse, then across the Bay north of Kent Island to the Kent Narrows. Stopped at Fisherman's Crab Deck for lunch. Continued going south on the east side of Kent Island through Eastern Bay. Saw a lighthouse on the south side, then crossed the Bay heading north and saw another lighthouse. Then Annapolis and under the Bay Bridge.
Note: First time gopro users and first time doing video editing in 10-20 years... Next video will have much better quality... ;)

Good video. I have a 1650 Rebel XS Sport (similar to yours) with a 90hp. It is a great boat for inland Ontario waters including the East side of Georgian Bay (Moon River, Parry Sound area, etc.). It does get harsh on windy days on the big lakes like Couchiching and the Kawarthas... A flat Lake Ontario was so much fun (72 km/h, empty with two guys), but a windy Lake Erie forced me back. The boat has its +/-. It gets to tight smaller spots and fits in my typical residential garage.

I’m thinking about buying the same boat and live in the area(Southern Maryland). I figured I would mostly stay in the rivers but go out in the bay when it’s calm. Are you still happy with your purchase of this boat???

Yes I am! Sometimes I do want a bigger boat, but being able to put it away in my garage is key for me (that has saved a lot of nature/weather damage over the last several years). It's definitely not the best boat for the bay, but on calmer days you can definitely get out there. I've taken my boat to the Inner Harbor, St. Michaels, Hart Miller Island etc. I sometimes fantasize about seeing if I can make it out to Smith Island (edited: from Point Lookout, of course)

Any problems with corrosion, rust or any other things associated with being in salt water? Been a little nervous about that.

Where did you get the seat adapter for the rear seating?

My boat came with the rear flip up jump seats. In this video they're flipped down which exposes a seat post for fishing, access to the rear battery compartment and some storage. Flipped up there are 2 more seats for passengers. I'm not sure if it can be added after or not.

I have a 179 polar Kraft I do mostly inshore salt . If you fill up your front livewell it definitely helps with the bow smashing . Adding weight to the front will help you not chip a tooth 🦷 😂👍

Is there a lot of difference in ride on rough chop with a 1750 impact or even a 1850 impact ?

Yes, there is no 17.5’ aluminum boat on the market that does really well in rough water. 18.5’ is the size, and Lund’s IPS2 hull is a game changer in rough water.

My 1775 Impact XS handles rough chop surprisingly well (Georgian Bay in Ontario). It’s 17’10” long and ~96” beam. The 18’ Impact is maybe 10-12” longer, similar beam. I suspect the difference would barely be noticeable.

Trimming up is not really a thing to do in Lund, they are deep V and not speed boats, keeping your bow down might drag but it's safer. It's funny to watch people trim up so much thinking there is no end to gains. Taking your bow out of the water in bigger waves can lead to some serious jack knifing back and force. I done it in a 16' Lund on lake of the woods when wind came up suddenly. Steering wanted to tear my arm off ramming the bow into a wave. Lost my cool, stupid, went fast nearly lost control.

@@heatmoon trimming up for some better speed, efficiency and a potentially smoother ride isn’t an issue in my Lund, an 18’ Impact XS. Nor in my friends 16’ Rebel, or my other friends 17’ Impact. Or in any previous deep hull aluminum in my past. If you look carefully at the time frame I quoted ( 8:36 ) the water was flat and smooth. At no point was I advocating max trim up in big waves.

Hey I got my Rebel now and after I get off the water I notice a little bit of water builds up in the portside rod locker. Have you experienced the same?

Hmm... no I don't recall ever seeing water in either of the rod lockers. I do recall seeing someone else online at mentioned that before though... www.in-depthoutdoors.com/community/forums/topic/new-2020-lund-1650-rebel-xl-sport-water-accumulating-in-portside-rod-locker/ I'll have to double check next time I go out since that seems to be 2 cases. (Not sure when that will be now that weather has really turned here.) Really hope it's nothing major for you! I have definitely taken some pretty big splashes so it's possible I didn't notice since lots of things have gotten wet on some of my trips.

Hey I myself just purchased a 1650 rebel XL SS and got a 75hp on it. What max speed do you get on the 90hp? Seems like handles the chop pretty well. gets me pumped! Nice video

Congrats on the new boat! Glad you liked the video. I took it out today on the Potomac River and had super calm flat water... so i did some speed runs! I was able to max it out at 43.8mph (according to GPS). I normally cruise around 33mph so I don't run out of fuel too quickly! (Depends on how rough the water is too.) I might post some video from today in the next few days. Enjoy your new boat. Super happy with my 1650 Rebel.

@@drachenz Thanks for the reply I also had another question. Do you know what your idle speed is? Reason for the question is because I do a lot of trolling and getting down slow enough would be nice!

I just got a 14.5 ft vhaul aluminum boat and I was wondering about taking it out on the northern part of the bay. I’ve had in some really rough chop in the Susquehanna river but I’m not sure how it would do in the bay.

these boats are not fun in the choppy waters. see the white caps, slow down or you get your fillings lose, maybe rivets too

Oh yea you definitely can't go too fast in the chop or over boat wakes or you'll break your back... :)

i do some of my boating on Lake Ontario, I have 1175 adventure, so far so good but but it can get harsh and wet if you dont adjust your speed or course.

@@robertduklus6555 Nice boat! Yeah you're completely right, you have to adjust to the conditions. We have definitely gotten rocked pretty hard at times.
