Small Diffuser Dome vs Softbox for photography video lighting

Do those little white domes really soften light? Depends what you call soften. On faces, no they don't. When lighting up a room for real estate photography and architectural interiors, then yes. But it's not really softening, its just spreading light rays in all directions. The difference is the size of the light source. Lots of photography tips, tricks and cool interesting stuff on this channel for photographers and youtube video influencers.

This is what I mean in some of my other comments - none of these other big photography channels teach the things that you do. I have been a hobby photographer for 15+ years and always believed those domes were a type of soft light diffuser. Thanks for today's lesson Markus! I feel like I owe you a tuition fee, haha.

Solid demonstration. Another effect many people do not consider is how close the light is placed changes how soft the light wraps around a face or any other 3D subject. The father the light, the smaller and more pinpoint the source becomes, even with a softbox.

2 reasons it looks good- 1. multiple lights from different directions make faces look better (in this case the softbox and the smaller light)... and 2. overexposing makes faces look better

I'm not gonna lie it took coming back a few times to start to like your channel. But like a fungus, you grow on people and I find your channel, informative, honest and I like it. No all light hearted. Ribbon aside., I agree with what you said in this video in the contacts that you were using that particular diffuser.. I like small round diffusers. The one I have is a bones mount cheap Chinese thing which is basically a plastic ball with bones mount much more circular than the one you have which is a half ball. When used the way, you set it up everything you said wrong with it is true . But that's not typically how are use those things. In some instances they can be used as a replacement for a China ball, which is a popular lighting choice for video but the best way to use them is if you're using them with really bright lights, and you can put them into the corner at the ceiling where you have white walls and white ceiling, or at least very light, and you allow that light to bounce off those surfaces towards your subject. This creates an impressively soft light, but you don't get a lot of power. I will typically use that for fill light then a larger light source for the key light it's about control and contrast by balancing light everywhere, and in a small room, the light you had could very easily give similar light to what you would get from a soft box with a light source that creates a hotspot.. So they can be useful and they are small and light . But you're right if you put it on the light stand and use it as a key like the same way you would use a softbox it doesn't give great results.
@MarkusPix
@MarkusPix Год назад
Yes, I made a video about using rooms walls and ceiling to soften light, also part 2 of this video is coming out in a few days to clarify and explain more same stuff as what you said. By the way, welcome.

I use the Gary Fong dome on my speedlight indoors at events where I cannot lug a 48" softbox through the crowds. Works great! I wish you would test a ring flash that mounts on a camera and uses an AD200 in a holster. I have only seen one tested and it almost killed the harsh shadows! May work as good as an external speedlight?

Hi Markus found this , no ideia if is good , do hope so.2 - CONTINUOUS OR ONE-SHOT AUTOFOCUS? In the AF menu, you have two different options: Continuous and One-Shot. In One-Shot, the Autofocus is inactive until you force it to act, while Continuous AF is always active unless you lock it (more on that later). 3 - ACTIVATING ONE-SHOT Deploying One-Shot Autofocus is as simple as pressing the little button on the front of the camera, right below the lens. The C100 will snap to focus whatever object is inside the white box in the center of the image. It’s really that simple. 4 - USING CONTINOUS AUTOFOCUS Continuous Autofocus can be a blessing and a curse. The C100 Mark II will focus on whatever is within the box in the center of the image - nothing more, nothing less. If your subject is there, it will work miracles. If they drift to one side though, you may find yourself looking at a perfectly sharp wall. 5- USING CONTINUOUS AUTOFOCUS WELL focus on them, and when they aren’t, you simply hold the focus lock button to keep the camera from hunting for focus. Deployed tactically, this can be a great way to reign in the worst impulses of the C100’s autofocus system. But don’t take my word for it - try this all out for yourself, and see which mode works for you!

I just saw a picture on Yahoo news from the 70’s. It had a shadow profiling the person, just like my pictures that I took using a Vivitar Thyristor 285 with a Fresnel diffuser mounted to the left of my camera. The picture brought back memories of all the shortcuts and mistakes I did in photography. Off topic, Do you know how to connect an NX500 and/or NX mini to a gimbal with a USB cable without having the camera go into charge mode and shut down. I would like to communicate with the camera on my FeiyuTech and Manfrotto gimbal.

In a way the flat reflector vs rounded one is similar to how a silver vs white bounce umbrella falls onto a wall. The former is more more powerful but less even. It's all about how big it is in relation to what is being photographed.

Nice video. I think your parallel light rays explanation is slightly flawed, though. The light still diffuses in all directions even with a large flat panel, it’s just diffusing from a larger surface. Some of the light will be parallel, but most won’t be. Of course a parabolic dome without the diffusion would be parallel as that’s the point, but this actually has the effect of hard light.
@MarkusPix
@MarkusPix Год назад
It's a simplified explanation. Yes there is diffused light in all directions of course from a softbox, but it also contains lots of parallel rays from a large flat surface that hit the face whereas the dome only has one ray from the very tip of the dome, all the rest shoot off and miss the subject.

If you were only able to have one light shooting outside for something like HS senior photos or before prom photos would you have an AD200 with a soft box? I have only done natural light with a 5 in 1 reflector so far. I want to learn how to use flash outdoors though. Just not certain where to start. I'm guessing that on camera flash with some type of diffuser or bounce attachment wouldn't be the best for my application? Thanks for your videos. Love your explanations. Have a great week!

If it was a serious gig like the official paid HS photographer, I would use a 600. if just a fun smalltime fun thing, then a 200, in which case this video would be the one to watch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WeFt5FkWXfU.html and also the original ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rB8y2Tec9Pg.html My personal favorite and easiest to use is simply the AD-S2 7" reflector with diffusion ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nIHtnusCMf0.html

@@MarkusPix Thank-you! It is not a paid gig. I'm doing a favor for a friend. I don't think I would still enjoy photography if I had a business doing it. I am retiring from teaching in June and I plan to look into working for a local studio going to schools to shoot kid photos on picture day. That should be fun and I will be able to learn some techniques if I want to do more at some point. Again, thanks for your input!!

Question, why is the softbox softer than the 4x4 diffuser? Is it because of the diffusion material, or more due to the box bouncing light internally around and spreading it more evenly onto the subject? I know there could be other factors, like the distance of the light from the diffuser, and the spread of light on the diffuser, but just wondering if there is s simple reason why.
@MarkusPix
@MarkusPix Год назад
The softbox captures all the light and forces it out the front. That light is hitting the back of the diffusion from all angles because of the silver box so its denser light. The light hitting the 4x4 only comes from one direction, the rest bounces back or goes into the room. Sometimes an open diffuser is just as soft or even softer if the room is small and has white walls, depends on many factors, like the type of fabric, the size of the hot spot etc.
