Small farmers take note: this video is a synopsis of how our farm business works and how to start a profitable small farm. I cover:
1. The different investment and payback periods for different kinds of livestock.
2. Which livestock types are best to start your farm with.
3. The different grains and forage we feed our animals, and where we purchase it.
4. The livestock processing laws and the different options for sending your livestock to butcher.
5. How to market your farm products
6. My personal and our farm's relationship to environmentalism and whether we are an organic farm.
Have any ideas for future videos related to starting a small farm? Comment below and I'll add them to my list for future videos!
Note:
-We do not offer farm tours
-We do not ship our farm's products

I like the idea of Sunday talks like this. I am not a farmer, but an involved consumer who enjoys learninig more about sustainable farming and how it works. Your talks often go beyond just farming and touch on personal philosophy and some interesting ideas. I say "go with it".

I appreciate the content. My grandparents farmed. My grandpa explained to me what you're describing. He said it is the difference between being an active environmentalist and an environmental activist. You are the former. The latter just want control over what other people do. -Steve

There's two types of the environment the annoying hippie ones and the ones that actually do good but still have moderation and understand what's best for the environment and economy so to speak. You are definitely the better type of environmentalist.

@@greatnorthern706 I happen to get along just fine with the "hippie ones." I've been in this business of promoting positive change for 20 years now, and found you can only show people the door; they have to walk through it themselves.

There is a third type of environmentalist...the one's who want everyone else but themselves to change. The negative aspects of political and entertainment people that demand limits on other people while they fly on private planes and drive huge Cadillac SUVs.

I Wouldn't mind seeing a video of your market day to show the interaction of the Farmer and those that trust in your products. We used the "Honor" system for sales until theft became a issue and had to stop. And with me being a care giver to my wife i couldn't leave the farm for more than a couple hours so i miss those days of seeing and making friends on Market days. Market day is one of the oldest ways to interact between a Farmer and a happy eater and it can be a lot of work but a lot of fun, especially at the end of the day when you load those empty trays and bins back in the truck and walk lop sided because of the money in your pockets.

Hello and good morning Rock Hill. How is the work going toward sorting out your farm and preparing to move off of it? I recently sold off all my farm equipment and got out of farming for good. We have someone else doing the field work so the equipment wasn’t getting worked any longer. Didn’t make sense to hang on to it. Hope it works out for you and you’re able to get the value and worth of all your farm equipment and implements. Cheers! Whipple

The category we've settled into is "Sustainable." Making no claims of "organic" eliminates a host of problems. For example, we use locally-grown grass hay as mulch. No one around here grows hay "organically." So that alone would prevent claiming our produce is "organic". Also, certain inputs are sustainable in their production and sourcing which aren't on the "approved" OMRI list. Langbenite is a mined mineral K (Sul-Po-Mag) source but not listed since it's a fast-acting, water-soluble salt. Pelletized poultry litter is another useful, but unlisted input. The chicken feed would have to be "organic" for the litter to qualify as organic. A fellow grower (who does claim to be organic...) once told me "You just do the best you can." But that doesn't seem quite right. Like Pete says "Let the check-list tire-kickers slide." (or something to that effect...) The most important relationship is between the customer and the farmer, NOT between the farmer and any certifying organization. Word of mouth recommendations from satisfied customers are better than any number of "Organic" signs on your market table or stall.

I say do what your heart tells you to do. You are a very passionate person, and it is what I so like about this channel. The best way to keep this channel so awesome is to keep you interested. If you are enjoying making the content, I know I will enjoy watching. Your approach to environmentalism is what has kept me here. Your approach is so thoughtful and not knee jerk emotional. I just love the mix of restoration, farming, environment, economics, historical. It always brightens my day when I see a new video up from you.

The sunday videos is always a blessing for us homesteaders and living the slow life. I like the market videos especially because we see the outcome of the cycle and effort you put into the farm. What ever you adjust to, I am in. I watch with a cup of coffee and early hours in the morning. I pulled out 2 chain saws after watching you cutting down 2 trees. Sharpening them up using small files and doing maintenance on them. Inspiring teaching for sure. Thanks Pete.

This would be a great format for Sunday videos. I was raised on a farm, cows hay and peanuts. I farmed through the nineties, left the farm for 17 years, now I am back. The land I have now is smaller. I am doing some hay that I sell to my sister and brother-in-law for their cows. I have been looking into raising hens to sell eggs and do some gardening to sell tomatoes, okra, etc. fro a roadside market. These Sunday videos will help in my process. Thank you for your time and what you do.

I love these kinds of videos from you... insights on farming. My hubby and I would love to start a CSA or community garden plot, or maybe just farm and run a produce stand on the same site. There is much that still intimidates me about the marketing aspects, especially when despite our semi rural area, I don't see much support for the local farmers markets. All the passion I have for gardening and for organic, fresh produce won't be enough if the people don't come out and support the farmers. I envy the large market you attend... here I'm lucky to get a dozen vendors in a local park, and half of them might be soap makers, salsa and jams, or bakery items.

When I have people preach to my about saving the planet I just simply answer " I have lived that way my whole life. To me it's just life. What are you doing?" I appreciate your common sense approach that I once thought was something everyone had. Now I know some need to learn it. Sunday topics - business of farming... money saving ideas and projects... marketing ideas and know how... on farm store setup and how to create the environmentfor customers... big thing I see people do is jump into farm tours, petting zoo type settings, and on sit sales with no insurance, so an idea of insurance needed and the liability you have to take on would be great... tractor capability, what you really need in a tractor as far as hp and weight/size, and loader to get things done on a small farm, not what the tractor dealer tells you you have to have, and implement options to get it done, such as hay, manure management, pulling wagons, and so on... just to name a few topics 😊. Keep up the good work.

Good idea. Can you discuss these items in up coming talks: property tax, value of land for sale based on farm size, rental costs for additional land and is it worth the cost to make additional profit, government grants you can get, how many hours a day you work, health care coverage, deductions you are able to create, is there an underground cash economy small farms run on, have you ever been audited or do you know any one who has been tax audited, what your plans are when you get too old to farm, why your 100% fed with your feed wagon chickens and pigs are better than factory farms that use the same feed and your operating cost not including your labour.

I love this video for another reason. It also helps those of us who are consumers be better at consuming and better at supporting small farms by understanding what you folks are going through to do this. Love how you explain environmentalism! Thank you! For future topics If you have any insight on pasture management we would love it! We have 9 acers and 8 Dexter/highland crosses. The pasture was horribly over grazed prior to us owning it and it had about a 2 year break so it is coming back in decently but I know we could do better and would like to get some more diversity in the pasture flora. I know there is also a lot of hype in my area over the grass raised and grass finished beef and as a health care provider I do care about what the omega content of my meat is and where the ratios are at. This topic is sometimes difficult to get across to consumers but may also be a fun topic. Thank you for creating great content!

Great content. I am really happy you are reducing the pesticide/herbicide load on the environment. I am much more concerned for these products than the GMO feed. A Sunday suggestion could be how you chose which structures to construct/renovate on the farm... what were your needs/wants for buildings? Thanks and keep up the amazing videos!

An absolute pleasure to listen and watch. Hello from Wisconsin, what used to be the small dairy farm powerhouse.

Your Sunday video idea sounds great. I'm past the age of starting a small farm, but I spent much of my childhood doing the things that you do, mainly for family consumption and barter goods with neighbors. Your videos do inspire me to grow my small town backyard garden. Thank you.

Love the Sunday video. What you do really dovetails what we do. We have an old Gehl feed grinder and I grind a little feed for some of my neighbors. I love to do it. We do a lot of our own butchering an make most of our sausage with recipes 5 generations old maybe older. It really is a great way to live. The best part is I learn something new all the time. I always learn something new with every video you do. I am very grateful for your knowledge. I can go on and on. I pray for your success and look forward to your next presentation.

I like the Sunday video idea. If I lived nearer to you I would definitely buy from you. I’m about 200 miles south of you. Awesome video Pete.
