Over the years, I’ve developed a style, like many modelers do. If we look at weathering on a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 is the dirtiest, my modeling usually falls in at about a 5 or 6. Definitely not clean, but not "Depression Era” dirty.
So, when I decided to build a dirty urban shelf layout called "The Grunge" some people were surprised. People who know me suggested that I rename the layout and build it out in a manner of other layouts and dioramas I’d built in the past.
After hearing that, I had a choice to make. Do I stick with what I’ve traditionally done or try something new? Watch the video and find out.

For further weathering techniques look at armour modellers weather their vehicles . One of the top modellers in that class is the RU-vid channel Nightshift. He does dioramas and now scratch built buildings. He is an artist! All the best, Ian

When you made the tenement, you mentioned minimizing weathering inside the stairway area. As my front porch proves, areas under cover actually end up more dirty as the rain does not rinse off the dust and dirt. This would also apply to the covered area of American Can. I would suggest adding more pastels to those areas well beyond your comfort zone. Love your posts.
@ThePixelDepotLLC
@ThePixelDepotLLC Год назад
That’s a point I hadn’t considered. It will certainly be easier to weather underneath the canopy in American Can than inside the tenement. But given the viewing angle I think the look of the American Can is more important, so it works out!
@jeffgoldenberg9579
@jeffgoldenberg9579 Год назад
I like how the tenement turned out. My personal preference is to use a darker colored mortar and not off-white/buff etc. It seems counterintuitive but to my eye it looks more realistic. I find that it also gives the structure an aged, more settled appearance as opposed to total dilapidation. Your mileage may vary.
@ThePixelDepotLLC
@ThePixelDepotLLC Год назад
I thought about a darker color for this one, but (obviously) decided to go lighter. There are so many variations of brick and mortar color, I think it’s hard to go wrong. And you can always go over it again later.

Joe, the finished building looks very good, that is first. I have the same building in N scale I bought at a train show built ( too much glue right out of the box) I solved my problem doing mortar wash behind the stairs . What I did was tape a straw on my Air Brush and applied the wash. On the foundation I used Burnt Umber Gouache paint, what I like to do is put a dot of paint let it have about 2-4 mins to dry and then with a damp brush pull it straight down . If I don't like it I just wet a flat brush and go over it and try again. Like I said the building looks great. As far as the building next to it go for it ( Devil hates a coward )

I have an idea for the building near the tenament structure. The reason its so clean and new is because it was severely damaged from a fire, that it had to be torn down and rebuilt
@ThePixelDepotLLC
@ThePixelDepotLLC Год назад
Not a bad idea. Do you have an explanation of why it was rebuilt in the older style architecture? (Not dissing the idea, just curious if that’s part of your backstory.)

Looks good with the pan pastels. Might consider getting a bunch of Hunterline or Vetero stains if you don't already have them. Helps to quickly get rid of the plastic look and dirty things up. That diner is on industrial avenue, with trucks and trains and dirt and dust. It needs some grunge...

I would have the building that looks new set as a new construction that has been finished in the last couple of years. That reason would be a way to not have to weather that building much.
@ThePixelDepotLLC
@ThePixelDepotLLC Год назад
I think you’d be on to something if the style was *just* a little newer. But the look of the building (might be hard to tell from that angle) definitely dates it to the earlier part of the 20th century. But I guess I could always say it was built specifically to “fit the neighborhood”!

NICE WORK! Definitely fits the area. As for the restaurant: why does it look so clean; it's been rebuilt. After suffering damage from a derailed boxcar being shoved through the wall, the owners of the property borrowed heavily from the bank, and the railroad's insurance, and rebricked and reworked the structure. In 1978 (the Grunge is '85, right?) That justifies the "new" look of the building.
@ThePixelDepotLLC
@ThePixelDepotLLC Год назад
This is a very creative idea! I never set a specific date for The Grunge. At least not yet. I decided it was around the same time as the main layout (which is July 1984) so I could use the same equipment, but never chose a specific date.

I like your work. Keep it up. I don't know your location or layout direction, but in humid locations moss and lichens grow on walls when shielded from the sunlight. You may consider adding some green in the mortar wash layer to make this effect.

Yes, I fall into that category of "sameness". You are also quite right about the hesitancy in trying something new or "bold" sometimes it can be fear of ruining an expensive model, other times it can be fear of the judgement of your modeling friends. It CAN be rewarding to try and succeed with a new technique.
@ThePixelDepotLLC

I think we all can run into that “sameness” rut. You find something you like or that looks good to you, and you go with it. But changing things up sometimes is good. I hear you about worrying about think Bryan expensive model. I always have that trepidation any time I do a locomotive!

Nice episode! Sometimes winning our battles with psychological or psychotic (I always get those mixed up :P) ideas floating around in our heads is step one. What we would like to do, the fear of doing it, finally asking ourselves 'what's the worse thing that can happen?' Then taking the leap. As for the clean building next store...The owner found a bag of money, and had the building restored to it's original glory (as it wasn't enough to sell out and buy an island somewhere). Again, nice video!

Looks great Joe, congrats... you are advancing your skills in the weathering department. Weathering is a skill that is tough to bring up, it takes a lot of practice and a lot of people don't have old crappy unused freight cars, loco's and buildings sitting around to practice on. Weathering is not for the faint of heart, I been practicing this skill for along time. Some times I love to weather my stuff to look really weathered, this is where the fun is for me.

I think Ieta's (spelling?) Joint should get a bit if the grunge treatment, but not nearly as much. Perhaps its owner takes pride in its appearance and cleans it more than the slum lord at the tenement building. Regardless, I think it needs to be dirtied up to some degree.

I dig all aspects of the hobby. As far as the run-down, seedy, dirty, whatever it's labeled this week I think it's over done. Don't get me wrong here. The work that's put into them is top notch. I understand some areas (in real life) are run down and dirty. But it seems to have become the norm to have every structure on a layout look like code enforcement is about to red tag the whole city. Again just my .02 pesos. I think the 5-6 on the scale looks good. Unless the modeler is aiming for that 9-10. As always said it's your railroad, do what makes you happy. The effects you added to the tenement looked great by the way. I think that could be spread across the grunge and you'd have the perfect look.
@ThePixelDepotLLC
@ThePixelDepotLLC Год назад
I agree. Most of the modelers doing to super dirty stuff are very good. But I just think it’s too much. Often it seems to be with the wooden laser cut structures. Seems like people think if it’s wood it’s got to look rub down and decrepit, and like you say, ready to be condemned. But I agree with you that everyone has the right to build their layout however they want. 🙂

Speaking of internal battles... I am currently planning on building my own shelf layout. This would be the first time I build something somehow permanent. Up until now I was just room floor railroading. Now I have to decide... Do I buy the tracks for this layout to not use up my floor stock, and pay about 400 Euros just for the tracks, or do I use what I already have and use most of my switches to then not being able to build floating switch layouts on the room floor anymore? Decisions, decisions...

Your roofs are looking not real enough... Why not using wet sandpaper of 400 grit or up to 3000 grit? Essantial is the black colour of the sandpaper than cut it into small lines of ¼" of an Inch and into length of max 2" Inches and to roofing your buildings by laying it overlapped onto the roof. Than do the mortar weathering of it. Don't forget pidgeon manures or manure from other birds. Some green colours for moos, too. Old tarpaper roofs looking badly with some moos onto it in dryer areas.

This one has become so over used, you got to ask yourself, how can a pkace this worn down, create enough business to afford train service? My god you can’t fix a window yet you are shipping freight car loads of merchandise??? You probably need to have a talk with your business manager. Me, I like weather worn but well maintained. Someplace employees don’t have AKs to go to work. Sure there are plent of urban districts tgat look as lousy as many of these layouts. But most of the buildings in them have forsale signs on them. Ya " got that factory kit in back of you and the windows look so "ROBO ? and they spoil it for the topic of weathering and the premise of calling your set-up the grunge ? those windows on that particular kit do not look like any kind of old windows on any of the old factories where I live and they are really-really bad for portraying ageing which is the same as weatherying so they are kind of like an Ed Wood science fiction scene ? they are so anti-imperfect . I would keep the kit and take a ruling pen with paint and draw some new " junker looking ones with a ruling pen and acrylic paint because they really stink visually . They look like vynil replacement windows they try to sell you on TV COMERCIALS , DO THEY NOT ? Sorry I had a hard-ass art teacher .
