STORYLINE:
Residents of Union Island, one of the small islands that make up St. Vincent and the Grenadines, were facing a disastrous scenario after Hurricane Beryl devastated the island's buildings and infrastructure.
The storm, which affected over 2,000 people, has left homes completely destroyed, schools with torn-off roofs, and trees stripped of leaves.
According to the latest report from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDMA), 98% of the homes on Union Island were damaged.
Extensive damage has also been reported on the island of Canouan.
Mayreau, the smallest inhabited island of the Grenadines, a mere speck on the Caribbean map, was razed, but with only 1.2 square kilometers and around 360 inhabitants, it is getting little attention and help.
When the storm hit, the people of Mayreau sought refuge in the church of The Immaculate Conception, built in 1930.
But its sturdy stone construction was no match for the hurricane, which tore off the roof and knocked down several walls.
“This church suffered an awful fate as a result of the passage of Hurricane Beryl a few days ago, and it is an indication of what has taken place throughout this island,” said Luke Browne, former Minister of Heath of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Mayreau resident James Alexander said that during the hurricane he saw a tank full of water being lifted up and swirling in the air.
"I had never seen anything like this in my life," he said.
Mayreau is far from the mainland, accessible only by a 4-hour boat trip from St. Vincent.
Aid is arriving slowly from nearby islands but it must be delivered by hand because the island has no vehicles.
