When balancing the voltages of cells you are connecting in parallel, it is recommended to first connect a 100 ohm resistor between the cells. This limits the current and allows the voltages to equalise while maintaining a safe temperature.

Thanks mate, you’re a lifesaver. my first foray into recycling vape batteries, I made a 12 V lipo (3S3P) to power a fan and while charging, it went off like a smoke bomb and I wanted to make it safer before I attempted again

I connected 3.41v lipo with 3.89v lipo battery and I used resistor leads has Fuses they didn't blow up but it took about 10 minutes for them to get back down to 20°c and the cells when connected went up to about 35°c in that time so was I forgot I put two lipos with different voltage together I think I was lucky enough to tell the tale

Thanks buddy. I have wondered that and only recently bothered learning circuit board diagnosis so I’ve seen them on BMS, but never with cheaper ones that don’t have internal balancing. Might be a good idea to use a resistor equal to the c rate of the batteries

This video is a tutorial on how to set fire to a house. When connecting batteries in parallel, it is advisable to have them charged to the same voltage. The use of very undervoltaged cells can lead to a very small capacity of the power bank. Otherwise a good idea, but very terrible execution. I recommend not following such a procedure.

I have tested about 60 of these cells & the capacities vary considerably. Some of the worst have been 545 mAh while some of the best have been even up to 640 mAh! It is especially important when connecting them in series to match the capacities. If one becomes discharged before the others in a battery pack, the healthier cells will try to reverse charge the lower capacity cell. This must be avoided at all costs! Like everything with lithium cells, this is a serious fire risk.

I bought myself a metal 50 cal ammo box and I keep all my vape batteries in there. A biscuit tin is better than nothing, but I think it would still melt through if all of them were to light on fire. Stay safe everybody and make sure you're respecting these lithium cells. Don't store them with any combustible materials, don't pierce them with sharps, don't leave them in direct sunlight, and don't overheat them when soldering the tags. Don't overdischarge them too! If they fall much below 2.5 volts the internal chemistry can begin to change & they degrade. This can increase their internal resistance which leads to heating on charging & discharging, which becomes a fire hazard as they exceed their safe temperatures!
@billyjoegilmour95

Interesting how you was saying about internal resistance because I tested one it had 65 ohms and other one had 35ohns so we need to remember to use same cells with same condition same voltage and same mahs and same internal resistance because if we don't we could have problems with them thank you for letting other people know ❤

I've rescued hundreds of these batteries from disposable vapes. They always charge OK, using a TP4056 charging circuit (with protection). What do you think is the maximum number of these cells you could use with this power Ank circuit board and how would you wire them?
@GrandadsOtherChannel
@GrandadsOtherChannel Год назад
Second part first. You would wire them in parallel. That board only supplies voltage for a single cell, so in parallel it only sees a single cell. First part. You would have to read the spec of the board to find out what current it can supply and do some maths. Generally, those boards are rated at 1 amp, although you can probably change that by replacing the reference resistor. Personally I think that 3 of those small Vape batteries is about right. I wouldn't push it any further with that module. Alternatively you could try what you like and just ensure you test it in as fireproof environment.

I'm sure someone already made this comment but storage of batteries like that is asking for problems. I love collecting the same batteries myself but storing them that way is a major fire risk as I'm sure you know. Someone else may not though so keep charging and be safe
@GrandadsOtherChannel
@GrandadsOtherChannel 9 месяцев назад
I think you are right, there are plenty of comments to that effect, including many by me 🤣👍🏻 You also help to highlight the crazyness of people who just discard them in the street. One on it's own catching fire will probably not be a problem, but in the right surroundings it will catch something else on fire and start a chain reaction. When you have lots of them stored together the issue is multiplied. However on the other hand. They do not catch fire unless they are damaged or they are on charge or being heavily over discharged. So storage itself is not the issue.

Are you using a li-ion charger to charge lipo batteries? I thought you were meant to change one of the surface mount resistors?
@GrandadsOtherChannel
@GrandadsOtherChannel Год назад
The surface mount resistor sets the maximum current draw. The circuit board I am re-using in this setup is not ideal, but close enough to work fine. It is probably slightly under the maximum current draw for the 3 cells in parallel. As it was from a li-ion cell powerbank, it will also be slightly under the ideal voltage for a lipo, so in summary it will be slightly under current and under voltage, which I would prefer to being over current and over voltage.

@@GrandadsOtherChannel you can make it out put maximum of 2 Amps so if they had lots of cells the same it be easier to leave them all changed together it's safer than doing few at time 2A if you had 10 you could change them all up with 200mah so if you was to do that they could last more recharge cycles the hotter the battery 🔋 that's big problem anything getting over 40°c should be not used has it's got problem with resistance because it loses more power = bad

@GrandadsOtherChannel
@GrandadsOtherChannel Год назад
Quoting from somebody else's article. Generally, when charging LiPo batteries, you should charge them at 1 amp per amp-hour of capacity. so, for example, you charge a 1500mAh LiPo at 1.5 amps. (1000mAh → 1 Ah) (450mAh → .45 Ah). That charger module is probably rated at 1 amp and those LiPo batteries are probably 450 mAh, but my understanding is that you add the capacity if they are in parallel, so 3x450 = 1350mAh. That means they would be charged slightly under the optimum, but that is safer than overcharging them. Charging at a lower rate is not a problem, charging at a higher rate is a fire risk. Unfortunately all the manufacturers use different ways of describing their battery performance, so it is not easy to compare them unless you have one of each and a specific task you want them to perform.

@GrandadsOtherChannel
@GrandadsOtherChannel Год назад
I guess you can read what you like. For information, these are not 18650 lithium-ion batteries. The 18650 refers to the dimensions. 18mm diameter, 65mm length, and the 0 at the end indicated it is a cylindrical battery, rather than a rectangular battery. the 0 would be replaced by the thickness with a rectangular battery. These are LiPo batteries, so that is technically a different voltage scale, but regardless of that, you would do well to research what those voltage scales are. I would suggest a genuine battery manufacturer site, rather than a RU-vid video. 3.7 volts is just the nominal value quoted, in the same way that 1.5 volts are quoted for AA batteries, even though they start higher and drop lower. When you charge a LiPo battery, 4.2 volts is the fully charged state and 3.2 is generally quoted as the minimum discharge charge. Li-Ion batteries used to be quoted at 3.6 volts nominal voltage, but marketing forces have allowed that to change to 3.7 volts.

Oops, just noticed I was talking about 18650s and you were talking about 18450s. In fact, the ones I used in this power bank are 13400, so that is 13mm in diameter, 40mm in length. All the rest of the information is correct. There are a whole range of sizes used in vapes. I have quite a collection.

@GrandadsOtherChannel
@GrandadsOtherChannel 10 месяцев назад
So you want to put 20 in series 🤔 to get 80 volts? But you would only have the amphours of the single cell. It would only be as good as the weakest cell in the chain. In series, the voltage adds, but the capacity doesn't. A 100 ohm resistor between each one will drop the voltage. I have no idea what sort of controller would balance charge 20 cells. It sounds like you might end up spending more money DIY than you would buying a proper one. Having said that, check out Julian Illett's channel, he does lots of solar related stuff.

If you did use the charger from a vape it might overheat if you use it to charge 3 batteries in parallel like I have them here as 3 batteries in parallel will be drawing 3 times as much current from the charger. In addition, if you wanted to use it as a power bank like this, you would still need a voltage regulator circuit and a standard USB output port. On the other hand, if you just wanted to use the single cell on something like a small RC car or boat, then the onboard charger would be fine. I do have that in mind as a project and I have collected 3 or 4 vapes that have the charger circuit in them. I just haven't got around to actually doing those projects. I did do some videos where I used a small charger module that I bought off eBay as I hadn't found any vapes with the charger at that time. Here is a very simple example ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Cx2ogpXkadg.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nyqQehP1cNI.html

what i do with these street lithium guys is i bought some super cheap, ~3 buck under cabinet PID activated LED light strips. its a pain to charge them but since I rent i figure its the only way to have any lights without making permanent changes to the house. i just solder them in parallel with the somewhat not so generous included battery pack, im ignoring the built in BMS thing but whatever. with their power saving motion activation and a small external tumor, they went from needing to be charged every 3 weeks to every 3 months. what worked even better was my old leftover iphone 5 batteries. because theyre so thin they fit inside the original enclosure usually. i recorded a video showing how i made them but just havent had the time to edit it and upload it to my channel

A friend recently gave me about 30 that are suppose to have 650mah batteries in them. I know about the fire risk of these things so I've placed them inside a .50cal ammo can and locked the lid. I figure if one were to get upset lol the metal ammo container would keep the fire confined. Possibly not even allow a fire as the Ammo Cans are almost perfectly waterproof sealed when closed so very little oxygen would be able to get inside.

If you short out any battery it can overheat and potentially cause a fire. It doesn't need to be a LiPo. SO don't have the terminals unprotected when you store them. They don't even need to make contact with a metal container, they can short out to each other.

@GrandadsOtherChannel
@GrandadsOtherChannel Год назад
I have just got back from holiday, it will take hours to catch up. A LiPo battery is 3.7 volts "nominal" rating. Like any battery, including zinc carbon batteries, when freshly charged they are a higher voltage and as they discharge they reduce in voltage. A "normal" zinc carbon 1.5 volt vattery can be nearer 2 volts when fresh out of the box. To allow for that, the circuit board designer will have taken that into account, so you have a little flexibility. However a freshly charged LiPo battery is over 4.2 volts, plus it will stay at that voltage for longer, so that may be too much of a jump. A buck converter would be a sensible option unless you are a gambling man. Buying a bunch of buck converters of eBay is probably cheaper than buying individual voltage regulators and building your own circuits. Here is a video I did 6 years ago on the subject of battery voltages - Comment reply - How many volts from 5 x AA batteries? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ilO5SVTSFAY.html Grandad's postbag 200106 DC DC Step Down Buck modules ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B-_8DToirTg.html And using a buck converter in this video - PART 2 6v Lightning McQueen with two 14500s. I seem to be doing a run of videos using these 14500 LiIon batteries. This one gives an extra challenge because it starts with 4 AA batteries, so expects 6 volts, which does not easily lend itself to using 3.7 volt Li-Ion batteries. To make the voltage match I add a mini Buck Converter module and adjust the 8 volts from the batteries down to 6 volts for the receiver. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0fnmW1XksCM.html

It would be a handy thing to hand out in either case.. back in the days of yahoo and the deviant art pages we made "throwies" just an led taped or glued to a button battery, some people glued them to magnets, some used flashing lights and some got added to urban gorilla gardening balls.. a piece of string with a weight could get them on the wires... not very eco friendly but..... make some up and put them in odd spots during your walks and check them every so often and recharge them.. Yes, Lipo batteries can catch fire, and yes, if one cell is faulty it will upset the others. It will do this, whether it is in series or parallel. However, this happens with other battery types, not just LiPo. All batteries are potentially dangerous. Nope. I got given a load of these discarded vapes. There were basically 2 kinds: a small square shape and the long cylinder which you have there. Unlike what you found, I found that the small square ones ( labelled LOST MARY ) had mostly a soft casing ( LiPo ) whereas the long cylinder had a hard-case cell (which had two prongs one end and looked like a capacitor ). However, both types of cell were the same thing: they are a '13300' Lithium cell with a 350mAHr capacity. The hard-case type are easier to work with because the contacts of the LiPo type are difficult to solder to and it's all very fragile. Are you connecting the cells directly to 5V? This is very bad and will wreck the cells. Worst case is it will catch fire. BigClive went into this in detail.
@GrandadsOtherChannel
@GrandadsOtherChannel 8 месяцев назад
Good morning, Bruce. I guess you commented without watching the video. I clearly show the battery management unit that I use. It takes a 5v supply and converts it to the right voltage and current to charge the cells. I explained that and provided details in the video description. I also reference bigclive and include his videos in my related playlist. As for 2 kinds, you must live in a small place, there are dozens, if not hundreds of different sizes and shapes. The capacitor style are fairly new on the scene, and I have done a video on them, again referencing bigclive for further detail. I strongly suggest that you read my video description.
