The story is more interesting than the project, I think!

As I live in a small shop, I'm always trying to find more efficient ways to store things to maximize the use of space.
This time, I am sharing the trials and tribulations of building a small cabinet to fit BETWEEN the studs in my basement shop. Here's a tip: when measuring the space, round down by at least an eighth of an inch. Studs are often not plumb or flat, as I was reminded of the hard way!

I just noticed you have the right colours in your shop - blue and yellow :D Also spotted the exact right kind of push stick on your bench! Neat sliding door!

I use both push stick formats... @2:30 you can see a Wandel-style on the fence... ;-) But yeah, I went with the warmer yellow/orange for the walls when I painted. That was pre-youtube. Not sure if I'd go with white if I repainted. On the one hand, I know that white is good for filming, but I like the warmth of the colour I have.

Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) I'm not so sure that white is the best for video, since it does reflect light a lot more easily. Looks brighter, but creates hot spots and doesn't provide much contrast for "the talent". I remember watching a thing about making "Seinfeld" (the TV show) and the production designer said they went through several wall colours before they settled on the right medium shade. If I had my time back, I would have panelled the walls of my shop from floor to ceiling with 1/2" plywood with just a coat of poly.

thats a good tip. I am going to be building a shop in the near future. I was trying to figure out what I should use on the wall and what would look best in my videos.

Use a candle to wax the groove to the sliding door. Cut a pointy edge to the end of the candle and rub it into the groove. Also rub the candle against the edge of the door.

wow, so their margin of error is about 1/8". When I did the framing for my workshop, I was still working off a margin of error of 1/16" (which was already a lot bigger than what I normally have), no wonder it wasn't as much fun as the I thought it would be
@Wordsnwood
@Wordsnwood 7 лет назад
I'm not a framer, so I don't know what their margin of error is, but I know that 2x4 studs are frequently not perfectly flat.

cool little project. I'm also working in a basment during the winter and space is definetly at a premium. how well do you find the rigid air cleaner works? I have a similar one by a different brand and I have been considering moving it into the basment.

It's okay for a small shop. After 8+ years the foam pre-filter has fallen apart, but the cloth bag inside is still there. I have to remember to vacuum it out every few months.

as a professional retired armchair quarterback, I have one question. why the side panels? why not attach each shelf with pocket screws. the shelves are then adjustable if need be. I really like the pocket door. just hodge podge a picture of a safe sized for the door instead of painting it. or if you have another old tee shirt use that :>) really enjoy your videos.
@Wordsnwood
@Wordsnwood 7 лет назад
This lets me build it as a unit and move it in and out or up and down. I've done the pocket-hole individual shelf thing and I find them fiddly in this arrangement. There's more than one way to do it. That's why I talk so much in my videos, to explain what I'm thinking.

I guess you could have duct tape them in too :>)

It is a General International, I have the same one.

What Brian said... I'd make a comment about virtually no Grizzly tools in Canada, but I do have a Grizzly bandsaw (bought that from someone who hopped the border to get it.)

You live in your shop?? Doesn't your Wife let you live in the rest of the house lol? Storage is a problem I have in my shop. Im not a big fan of cabinets. I prefer drawers. I need more drawers. I am thinking of building a mitre saw station similar to Jay Bates.
@Wordsnwood
@Wordsnwood 7 лет назад
I don't think I can fit many more drawers in my shop, so cabinets was the choice. My line is that I would prefer to have "everything in drawers or behind doors" Jay Bates' station is massive. Check out John Heisz' more compact unit as well. He's got lots of good ideas in his. Oh yeah, and DIY Tyler also built one recently with some good design choices.
@WesHamstra
@WesHamstra 7 лет назад
+Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) im familiar with all those. I like jays the best. Im building a shop in the near future. Im going to try and incorporate the mitre saw station into the blue prints

+Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) it will be in my parents backyard. They live on 1/2 acre. The house will be mine one day. The bylaws wont allow me to make one big enough at my house.
