Small Switcher Pulls Huge Train By Itself! Then Push/Pull Train Goes Both Ways For Good Customer

How many cars do you think a small switcher locomotive can pull? Watch this small EMD MP15DC pull a huge cut of cars out of Huhtamaki, Batavia. Then the train goes to Sardinia to pick up a load. A GE B36-7 is added to the rear for a Top And Tail ( push pull train ). The train had to get a load of scrap metal from Cohen Recycling that had been left in Sardinia the day before. We see the train pass through Mount Orab, Ohio and Sardinia, Ohio going east and then returning west. Both sides of the train are shown. The final scene is downtown Williamsburg, Ohio and then you see the dogs playing in the sandbox before the slide show. The boxcars on the train came from Huhtamaki, the covered hopper cars came from Mount Carmel Group next to Huhtamaki and the scrap metal gondola car came from Cohen Recycling. The train has an engineer but the conductor uses a pickup truck to get around. The conductor drives to the areas that need switched. At 9:15 there is a scene with the green locomotive that is being worked on in the middle of the Sardinia Wye. The day that I made this video that locomotive had been started up and idled for a little while. To me it sounded really great and I can't wait to see it running. Filmed Friday, May 28, 2021. Listen in on 160.860 and they rarely use an EOT. Thanks for watching! Please thumbs up and watch another JawTooth video to help my channel.

Fun facts why the MP15 is the ultimate “Road switcher”: MP = MultiPurpose because GM marketed it as a “road switcher” (not a yard switcher). It has the same 1500HP EMD 653(?) as a GP15-1 and more HP than most of the first gen EMD 587 based diesels like GP7/GP9/SD9 etc. The SW1500 still had the old Alco style trucks or whatever they’re called. The MP15 has the real deal Blomberg B road trucks same as a GP40, GP35 etc. (I think I said it right, otherwise it was Blomberg M but regardless it’s not the ones that the GP38 and GP50’s have.) The road trucks allowed the MP15s to be geared up to 50-55MPH for true road freight use! Also the MP15DC (the earlier model) was DC and had the radiator and fan in front just like an SW1500 which was prone to overheating in a multiple consist unit due to lack of airflow at the front when back to back. The later MP15AC fixed the issue by doing away with the front radiator and switching to dual front side “tunnel motor-style grilles”. By far the easiest way to spot the difference between an MP15DC vs AC. The MP15 is my favorite switcher and the ultimate switcher at that. Being a model railroader it’s the best locomotive for all of us who don’t have the luxury of an entire basement or large room to dedicate to 22-28” curves.

I used to watch those MP15s switching at the Gemco yard in Van Nuys, CA all of the time back in the late 80's and early 90's. Those little locos could push and pull way more than 15 cars per loco. They were little work horses that did the yard work and the local deliveries and I had the pleasure of actually sitting the engineers seat to operate the loco down spurs thanks to my uncle who worked for the SP at the time. Such great memories that can't be lived by today's youth.

Remember that the moniker “MP” stands for multiple purpose not just a yard switcher and the trucks used on the MP15’s are not standard yard switcher trucks, they have higher traction ratings and are meant for pulling heavier loads. It truly is “ the little engine that could” and frequently does.

The electro-motive division mp15 diesel switch engine had a horsepower of 1,500 horses. They used to run them in tandem with a cow-calf set up. The other locomotive which was the same as a mp15 did not have a cab on it. They were quite commonly used back in the 60s 70s and early ER.

Another great video Jaw! Those 15s were popular on the long gone P&LE. I used to watch them from my room at Duquesne U. pulling freight from Pittsburgh’s doomed steel mills. And the P&LE would lash a 15 up with their one of their old U25Bs and a GP38 to haul coal to Ashtabula. Those little switchers are really powerful.

Great video as usual, JT. Nice to see that MP15 switcher putting in some road work. Those switcher are work horses. Also you can see it's old Southern Railways letters showing with it's black paint fading. Hopefully down the road when CCET retires the switcher, it will be restored to old SR livery by a Railroad museum.

That was fun to see! Years ago, I did yard switching with a 660 hp Alco S-1 switcher. Of course, trains were much shorter then! I also used to run a passenger job with bookend EMD F-7s (one on each end, facing opposite directions). We would pull the train with one engine to the end destination, detrain, board the other F-7 and pull the train back to the home depot. We called that type movement an “out-and-back.”

On the old Rahway Valley line in NJ we used two 70-ton GE switchers to handle all our freight (and we handled quite a lot at one time), so I can’t understand your amazement about the CET switcher handling a couple of freight cars. Short lines in NJ like the Rahway Valley and the Raritan River, both now sadly defunct (Progress?), depended on the power of switcher locomotives to move their freight cars. By the way, it’s nice to see CET making good headway. It has to be good news for the local economy, and only further proves the economic (and environmental) importance of railroads. Thanks for a marvelous video and keep up the coverage of CET.

This is my favorite thing to see in train world: an end cab switcher pulling with the cab leading.... Why ? It probably goes back to my childhood, where I would often see this in southwest Philly around the refineries- SW1s, 8s & 1200s pulling & switching. Me & my brother got to ride in one at the Gulf refinery one time. My dad drove a propane trailer 3 nights a week over there from S. Jersey after his regular job. Yes, this was b4 insurance companies had us all scared..... My dad took us together for some unknown reason (only 1 of us usually got to go at a time- it got crowded quick in that Louisville cab....my brother & I used to fight about who was gonna go on any given night !) We were parked at the propane racks, and a SW-1 rolled up to switch out the rail cars on the other side of the rack. My dad asked the crew if we boys could ride- they said yes !! This was Conrail era, late '70s. The SW-1 was all black, a former Penn Central unit that just had a white CR stenciled onto the hood. Plainest looking switcher you ever saw- much like the one in this vid !! Neither me or Paul remember much about the ride itself. We took the loaded cars to a yard, dropped them & spotted more empties to be loaded at the racks. We do remember the sounds of the inside of the cab, though.... Pulsing, throbbing noises from the diesel engine & the air compressor kicking in now & again. And the moisture valves blasting periodically. What kid could say this today ? Oh, and they had to pull down nudie pictures they had taped up to the inside of the cab walls, lol !! Train crews will be boys too, I suppose..... 🚬😎

@@davidfoubert1493 I remember the C420's - they were utilized all over the LIRR, and in the mid 1960's I saw them on the Fremont secondary in Brooklyn, NY - even when that line was still under catenary. The C420's handled local freights on that line, while E44C locomotives did the long freights from the Brooklyn waterfront up over the Hell Gate bridge to the Bronx .

Thank you. Those small switchers are my favourite. 2 trains an hour but they make noise for ten. We only hear train horns on foggy nights here in the Netherlands because there are very few unguarded crossings left. Drivers sometimes greet each-other with a short hoot when passing but nothing like this.
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 3 года назад
Laws in the US require trains to make a heck of a noise at crossings. Seems totally unnecessary in most cases: if the crossing has gates, bells and warning lights, surely that's adequate warning? Many towns are now introducing "quiet zones" where the trains don't use the horn for protected crossings.

FYI According to the UP tonnage chart for our engines, the MP 15 has 1,600 horsepower with 62,000 pounds of tractive effort and is good for 4,150 tons on flat ground. This cut has 12 loads and 2 empties. Gross weight should be around 1,600 to 1,700 tons. They are powerful engines for their size. On flat ground this train should run around 50 MPH, depending on the gear ratio. Max speed of some of these engines is 45 MPH if I remember correctly.

Well, if one 6 axle road engine can pull a 100 cars by itself hence the reason why road trains (not locals which use 4 axle switchers like this one) with 2 or 3 six axle locos normally average 100-200 cars it makes sense that a 4-axle switcher could pull 14 cars. Most locals have 2 switchers on them (one on the front and one on the back) thats why they average 10-30 cars.

It's not the number of cars but the weight of the loads. The first segment looks to be 14 empties (look at the coil springs with a good amount of space between the coils) to determine loaded/empty) 14 cars at 35 tons/empty car is only 490 tons. On level track you usually only need 1/2 horsepower per ton, 1 HP on up to a 1% grade. (MP15 is 1500 horsepower) Not fast but gets the job done.

There's one near me at a mill that pulls as many if not more cars too the cars are mostly loaded with cardboard coming in to the mill for recycling and the poor little engine looks like it's seen it's better days but it keeps on working every day and night around the mill here in West Monroe Louisiana ✌😎

If ballasted and for some units rewired the humble switcher can be a real powerhouse. SP had a huge fleet of SW1500s that quite often were used in road duty. Wisconsin Central would use them to break up and build trains in the yard then switch industries later that day. Get your money's worth!
