As a player, I was a little skeptical about the two input jacks being soldered together. Just the action of inserting, removing, and any strain on it over a period of time would cause failure. Your added thorough prep and mechanical advantage should alleviate that. Your attention to detail and commitment to getting it just right is commendable.

Great job, and instructional on what it takes to do a good job. A good solderer is essential to being a good tech, and doing reliable work. The razor is a standard tool, the *best* for cleaning metal surfaces. I would like to see the shorting tabs cleaned on the jacks as these also carry current through the resistors for proper impedances in #1 and #2 jacks. I use micro-polish on a cut strip of paper, and "draw" or pull it through the closed contacts, then clean with elect cleaner. Never sand contact points, they will oxidize and fail very quickly.

My favorite scraper for oxidized leads and terminals is an Exact-O with a number 11 blade. Good for removing the enamel off magnet wire as well. Not so good when winding with 42 gauge though. Just have to remember the Boy Scout whittling mantra. "Cut towards your chum, not your thumb.".

My favorite tool for cleaning oxidized terminals is a fiberglass bristle scratch brush. They also make scratch brushes with steel and brass bristles but 99 times out of 100 it's the fiberglass one that I use. I also use a pencil eraser ---- actually a draftsman ink eraser with some grit in it ---- to clean contacts. I really need to do a video about this.

Wire wool mate, safer.

@goodun2974 19 дней назад
@@giulioluzzardi7632 , steel wool is conductive, and drawn to anything magnetic such as speaker magnets and guitar pickups. There are better methods.

Sprague used to care enough about quality that when they moved production from a lowest bid job shop in the southwest USA to a bid job shop in Mexico, they were not satisfied with the Mexican winding shop's quality. The Mexican shop voided the Sprague Atom contract and the USA shop started making the Sprague Atoms under contract again. Now the Sprague Atom caps makes up such a small part of Vishay's product line, they simply just don't care anymore.

"Straight razor" sounds all dangerous and everything. 😂 I never would have thought to splay out the pins! Great tip, thanks.

Lyle I just love all the details you look for when servicing amps. I am the same way. Looking for any signs of stress or mechanical failure usually helps me find hidden problems before they become bigger.
@goodun2974
@goodun2974 19 дней назад
Everyone who has ever swapped preamp tubes should own a tube-pin straightener, a metal die with drilled holes that match the spacing of the tube pins. If you have to manually straighten or splay out the pins, be aware that *Use Of Needlenose Pliers Can Crack The Glass*; best to straighten them with fingers and thumbnail to the extent possible. Anyway the straighter the tube pins are before insertion, the less chance that they will overexpand and loosen the contacts inside the socket.

I really enjoy all these vids, whether long or short and have learned quite a lot from your vids . . . I did a lot of electronic work as a gov't contractor here in RI but now retired and enjoying doing the mods to my "clone" built amps . . . also, tks for the tip on the Warehouse G10C speaker which I will be getting for the '65 Princeton RRI . . .

My 1979 Deluxe Reverb (bought used in 1984) has a big misalignment between the panel and the brass grounding plate. Had to fix the same solder joint on it, very difficult to get them out. Removing a pot from it requires force, if not destruction of the pot. They used the plastic shaft with push on knobs. On the other hand, it still sounds great.

Hey! I own a '79 Deluxe Reverb too! I paid $200.00 for mine, back In the early '80s. I love this old amp, and yes, they sound great. Just don't pull out the boost knob, or as I call it, the "pull that #$%@ boost and I'll break your #$%@ fingers!" knob. Question for you, @NinerFourWhiskey, does yours break up at any point? I swear, mines doesn't break up, it just gets more angry. It can be a very angry little amp. 😅

The other day I switched on my Sirius amp without the speakers connected, it took me 30 seconds or so to realise but the damage had been done so now I need to replace the 6V6 power tubes...😢

I’m so sorry Mr. Lyle to ask you this question that is off-topic again my apologies but, what do you think about the 64 Vibroverb reissue Diaz/SRV Mods custom shop hand wired amplifiers? 500 produced in the mid 2000s I believe

I find these videos very interesting and informative but I don’t have the confidence to tackle anything other than the most basic of issues. Do you have any recommendations for a basic electronics course that would help me to systematically understand electronics better especially in regard to amp circuitry? I learn a lot from your videos but there’s so much that’s over my head. I know just enough to get in trouble….lol.
