Bought the book as soon as I heard he was starring in it. It's beautiful, everyone should read it. Can't wait to see the movie.

Sheer terror, anxiety and helplessness!. I attended Catholic school in the nineties, I was so afraid of the nuns'!. I can't imagine what is was like for those who were forced into 'prison' and their babies forcibly removed!. 'Fallen women'!. Just incredibly traumatising. If this scene is anything to go by, this film will be the equivalent to a real and profound gut punch.

To this day my husband hates with a passion the Sisters of the Blessed Virgins that ran his grammar school in the 50s. They finally went the way of the dinosaurs because they were such evil bitches.

I went to catholic school in the 60's. It was nothing like what has been portrayed over the years in films like these. The media is great for putting their OWN twist on things. Don't forget, those girls own parents put their girls in those laundries. They weren't kidnapped and brought there. The parents of the 50'a were just as culpable.

@@daffodilyellow2430 the catholic church was a far greater evil in this country than the Brits. At least the Brits didn't pretend to be anything other than exactly what they were.

I remember seeing the play Late Night Catechisms in the late 80s. I found myself surrounded by terrified adults including my best friend. Why? They had all attended nun run catholic schools. It was profound.

Wow! I felt that oppressive, sterile, sickly colours of those old Irish institutional buildings. I can smell that overpowering hospital smell of the 70'/80's. The nun of still, terrifying unspoken judgement ... All from Cillian's walk too. Brilliant

Makes you think about the words "Sister" and "Mother"..the context of "family" and what the girls and women of the Magdalene Laundries and elsewhere went through. Abuse, exploitation, neglect seemed to be a-ok in these so-called Christian facilities. A testament to what governments combining with religion can do to a nation and generations of innocent children and unwed mothers let alone a society as a whole. A great book and a great film as a glimpse into empathic response to horrible situations. Can't wait to see Cillian knock another great role out of the park.
@daffodilyellow2430
@daffodilyellow2430 6 месяцев назад
It also makes you think about the words "parents" because those girls own parents put them into those laundries - the girls didn't walk in there all by themselves. Their own parents did it to them. It wasn't only the nuns at fault - don't forget that.

Loads of small films do the rounds at film festivals before being picked up by major distributors so it will probably get a full cinema release in a while. It's just in the Berlin Film Festival first.

Oh my god - will he do the right thing and speak up or will he be intimidated into silence by this monster in a penguin suit? Spoiler: As every Irish person who grew up in 80s Ireland already knows the answer is: It wouldnt have mattered what the hell he did because back then there was literally no one to "speak up" to. The Church and all those affiliated with it were simply untouchable at the time - on a par with the cops or government officials. Just think of a body-snatchers horror movie where everyone has already been snatched and converted into a soulless human zombie - thats what Ireland was like at the time. The idea that this nun would feel in any way threatened by a coal-man or feel the need to invite him in so she could intimidate him with veiled threats is pure fanciful movie nonsense with no basis in reality. In fact in real life she would have had zero awareness that she was doing anything wrong here. If anything she would be expecting praise from him for the wonderful job she was doing looking after these scandalous "fallen women". Its messed up and certainly not nearly as dramatic but it is how things were back then.

@@stephen8156 I finished the story. Very good. I saw in an interview with Cillian that he said the key to the character for him was something Clare Keegan had said about him being in a state of breakdown for most of the story and not some big hero. That actually helped me to understand and appreciate it much better with all her seemingly random descriptions of what he is thinking/feeling which would have gone over my head otherwise. Writers are so subtle these days that I often feel like I'm missing the point which is frustrating. Hence it can help to read up a bit about it first. In the book I think the ending is left ambiguous as in is it really actually happening or is his rescue of the girl just the end stage of his breakdown and he is imagining it all? Thats how I read it anyway. Would the girl really still have been put back in the coal shed after she had already been discovered there once? I liked it though. It was the good kind of ambiguous ending as opposed to the bad kind which just leaves you confused and frustrated. And there may be some truth to the idea of private citizens trying to resist the Church's control around then as the 2022 documentary "Pray for our Sinners" shows. How did you find it growing up in New Ross by the way? I grew up in North Cork and didnt really love it. If youre curious to know more then just type the words "Family Farm Survivor" into the search bar

It is curious that all the reviews made by Spanish media (almost all right-wing) of this film are negative, while almost all the reviews by international media are extremely positive.
