Juntura, situated in eastern Oregon along U.S. Highway 20, is a small ranching community. Nestled in a small valley along the Malheur River, it finds itself embraced by extensive volcanic hills, creating a captivating contrast between its green fields and the surrounding arid landscape. At the eastern edge of Juntura Valley, the Malheur River, originating from the southwest, converges with the North Fork Malheur River, which approaches from the northwest. Moving eastward from this point, the river flows through a slender valley for an extended distance. Juntura Valley envelops the town in all directions, with a narrow extension stretching several miles to the northwest.
The name Juntura was likely chosen by Milligan, a settler who came to the region in the 1880s and later became the county school superintendent. The Juntura post office was founded in 1890 and remains in operation to this day.
In Juntura, the highway takes a turn, and a network of small gravel streets stretches for just a block or two in each direction. The town is adorned with numerous tall cottonwood trees, distinguishing it from the surrounding hay fields. The majority of the quaint, older residences are mostly concealed by the lush foliage. Tucked away on a side street, the most notable structure in the town is an aged, red brick schoolhouse.
