I’m actually using a new one now, that one from Harbor freight kept blowing out, the capacitor inside kept popping on my 15 amp dust collector went through about four of those before I switch to an Amazon one and that one’s been working for months now

Only in America is a two car sized shop referred to as "small" 😄 lovely shop though! Thanks for the tour, I'll head back to my tiny 13m2 (140square feet?) shop hehe
@BitnerBuilt
@BitnerBuilt Год назад
Thanks! It’s all relative 😀 the main thing, though is I stick to a rule of trying to organize everything as compact as possible so all the same things can be done for a 13m2 to a 2 car 😀

Yea, I think this “small” workshop has maybe 6 times the floor area of mine.

Small 2 car garage? Sir, for the majority of the UK, that space would be advertised as a indoor stadium. Jokes aside, great video. My shed is less than half a garage sized for comparison and I'm trying to maximise storage with modular power tool trolleys that roll out, but that means I can only work when the weather is nice, as I've got to roll everything out before I can walk in. A shelter is in the works, but for now, I make it work and I'm going to be using some tips from you, so thanks!
@BitnerBuilt
@BitnerBuilt Год назад
Haha true maksqwe1! I more think how my space is smaller than all the big woodworking RU-vidrs with their big warehouse shops! Wow that trolly idea sounds very cool! Have you seen some of the mobile tortion box tables where the legs fit inside? Could I vision a trolly where once you roll it out a full work table folds down, lots of possibilities!

That's a massive 2 car garage even for the US. Most are between 20'x20' and the normal "large size," 24'x24'. 20' is about 6m; 24' is about 7.3m.

Dude, this was so incredibly helpful! I especially appreciate that I'm looking at a real shop and not an influencer product commercial. Your solutions are elegant and approachable; in fact most of it looks totally doable without having to go out and spend ten grand on shop tools, non-existent baltic birch, or having to hand plane a maple, butcher block counter top for offcut storage or some bs.. . Thanks man. Seriously. Thanks! Subscribed.

Another good use for an awkward corner is as a parking lot for tools on wheels. All the things you don't use every day but don't have room to leave out in the working area. My jointer and thickness planer live there.

Thank you for your showing all your secrets. I also stole my husbands 20x30 garage for my shop. It was really nice to see another shop that is realistic and has the same tools and storage issues as mine. So many other videos show shops that are unattainable for the “regular” person. I’m in the process of reconfiguring and am going to steal some of your tips. Thanks again.

At last! A wood workshop that has not just ignored all that stuff that “goes out in the garage” in every household. E.g. bikes, inflatable kayaks etc. they are usually missing from shop tours. So that usually means [A] the tour has carefully hidden all that junk or [B] there’s another storage area that’s not mentioned Thank you for showing us how you deal with that problem we all have but is rarely mentioned in shop tours.
@BitnerBuilt
@BitnerBuilt 11 месяцев назад
Thanks! Yea wish all my space was for tools but all that stuff needs a home too!
@David-hm9ic

One thing that can be done in small to medium shops (hard to honestly call yours small) is to make the top surface of all of the benches and tools the same height. I used my table saw as the standard and made all of the benches, thickness planer bed, jointer bed, assembly table top, small bench tools bench all match the level of the table saw. That allows me to run an extra long piece over the top of the other surface and keep it flat on the table saw. That also makes everything a potential infeed/outfeed table.
@BitnerBuilt

That's a good recommendation David. Per your other post my shop is 22x24ft. My other small shop videos articulate that whether you're in a 2 car garage or a 10x10 shed, my organization style is that of a very small space, looking to get as much in a space as effectively as possible, modular and multifunctional. This was a spur of the moment video I threw together to answer some questions from another video, so forgot that "speal". Thanks again for the tip!

I love this shop! I am an artist, easy furniture maker/wood worker and love things organized. I keep my house pretty darn clean and organized and it drives me crazy when the garage doesn't stay that way. I do not want to have to clean the garage before I start a project. So thank you for the video. I am going to utilize much of this. Great job!

For some reason, yours looks a lot bigger than mine but I may have more things that take up floor space too. I will do a video on mine soon so you and others can see the mess. You have given me a few ideas and I thank you for that. I will try the E shape you have and see if that works.

This is one of the things that gets me with most workshop tours is that the presenters go "Look at my tools and this is where I store this tool, this is my work bench". But where is everything else stored like paint cans, timber, pvc plumbing, mowers, chainsaws etc? The actual wood working tools don't take up that much space, its all the other crap that goes along with it LOL. So good to see some actual storage tips here. I like the thoughts behind what to do with the corners, using large storage tubs for general items (I've come to that conclusion as well for plumbing & electrical stuff). I think it all just comes down to having a dedicated area for jobs and having those items you use for that task within easy reach. And using your vertical space as well. The other thing I thought was clever was building light holders off the cabinets instead of suspending them from the ceiling.

Great video Sir!! I love the honesty with the river table. The “shelve and put to the side” comment had me cracking up! We have all been guilty of that. I saw the JUMBO harbor freight clamps you have. I am of the same mindset. When I have a LOT of clamps I use for every project I use harbor freight for the affordability mindset. Do you have a video for how you built the tabletop tool caddy that holds your pliers and smaller sanding supplies? That is EXACTLY the solution I have been looking for - everything is visible, easy to retrieve in an instant, and still organized. It looks like you have dado cuts every couple of inches for removable dividers im assuming? I don't have a ton of experience building things quite yet and I might try to reverse engineer it from what I could see but a detailed video with dimensions would make it much easier for me! Thanks. Awesome shop btw, your shop is what I hope to have many years down the road! I try to remember, slow and steady - no shop is built in a week!
@BitnerBuilt
@BitnerBuilt Год назад
Thanks Lena! I’m going to do a video on one sometime next week, I’m going to remake that entire corner of the shop and when I do, I’m going to make a larger version of what I have up now, so I’ll do it very detailed with dimensions and then people can make it as long as short as they want ! But yes, it is made with dados and I use thin, cheap underlayment pieces as the dividers

Looks like you've made it to 1k subscribers... and then some. Found your channel yesterday. I enjoy your content. This video is helpful. Although... I have a large shop. And it's not a garage. It's an addition someone made to the house years ago... for a woodshop. Fell in love with this house the first day I stepped foot in it. We entered through the shop and this was my dream home... before I made it out of the shop. I've been blessed to have all kinds of space after moving from a small undersized one car garage with low ceilings. I really don't maximize my space. We've only lived here for four years and I've grown quite a bit in that time. Adding things here and there where it fits has made my shop not as useful as it could be. I did recently change the layout and it's so much better. But I have so much wasted space. Some of these ideas are great to help me maximize the space I have so that it doesn't feel so cluttered. Thanks for sharing.

Oh it collects heavy on those, I make sure to air spray and vac them every 2-3 no when I notice it. On the cnc that’s also why I used a Mac mini (no fan to pull in dust) and I mounted it sideways with the vent pointing down so no dust would go in

@BitnerBuilt
@BitnerBuilt Год назад
I’m not a huge fan of those personally but some people love them, i find their container sizes aren’t big enough and break easy / spill everything out too easy. I didn’t point it out but on that middle divider between my garage doors I made a thin shelving unit, 8ft tall, for all my screw and nail storage. I buy from Walmart the clear pencil/eraser cases that are in the school goods isle for $0.50 each there are even bigger sizes of the same shape, so depending on my used case, I buy the eraser container for them that’s needed. They nest stack as well. Not saying that’s the best solution but I like it a lot for me! Then when I’m working on a project I go over and can just take the box that I need to my workspace use it and then place it back on the shelf afterwards. I also have the shelves organized by gauge so all the number 10 screws all the number eight screws, etc..

Just found this…..You could store a flip cart in your junk corner if you decide to re-do it. If you go the vertical lumber storage like you suggested, perhaps you could make a roller caddy with a segmented arm pinned to the wall. The stack is stabilized, when the caddy pulls out and spins on a lazy Susan. When it’s unloaded or has minimal inventory, you can in pin it and clean behind it. v/r wh

The biggest hurdle to overcome in setting up a 2 car garage shop is to get the cars out of there permanently and therefore transform the space from "garage" to "shop" space. If your wife insists her car be in the garage, then everything you do in the shop is going to have to be done in such a way that it can be set up for use and then rolled to the side of the shop after use. After that, you are 1000% correct, the yard equipment needs its own space. The bottom line is you have to get as much "stuff" as possible that is non shop related out of your shop space. The key to getting the stuff out of the garage is to not be a pack rat to begin with. People with garages tend to throw their crap in the garage, so you have to have the right mentality of not retaining non-useful items "just in case." Have a garage sale, spring clean and organize the house. Once the house is good, then you can tackle the garage and see what issues you have left. The last thing you want happening is your family throwing crap in your work space.
@BitnerBuilt
@BitnerBuilt Год назад
Well said and 100000% correct. My garage is not a garage. It’s a wood shop and when my kids come in and leave their shoes on the ground, it’s a problem because it’s my workspace! I believe that for most casters are the key for everything being able to put everything to the side, when not in use, and then pull it out and set up your workflow for when you can get that car out of there and get to work! I’ve been really lucky and that I was able to make this so that I could get the cars in here in an emergency, but it’s definitely not a park the car in here every day type of thing!

Thanks for the detailed tour - you did a great job answering my questions! I got a number of other new ideas from the tour, too. Your layout and carts are impressive - it looks like you coordinated all your counter heights(?) Was that based off the table saw height? (clearly the outfeed table was). I would really appreciate a quick video of your (apparently?) adjustable rack for hanging your drills. (I noticed wingnuts, so I assume the dividers slide in a track of some kind? Maybe do a YT Short of that?) Ditto for that nifty vertical hand tool holder! I was JUST drawing up plans for drawers, but your divided system looks much better. Your experience on height, spacing, and divider material and height would be really helpful. (Just a few measurements and "gotcha's" you ran into, not a detailed build vid.) Finally, do you have any tricks for storing corded tools? I've got corded drills, heat guns, two angle grinders, routers of various sizes, saber saw, palm sander, etc. I always struggle with what to do with the !@#$% cords. Again, thanks for the great channel. I look forward to following your future vids.
@BitnerBuilt
@BitnerBuilt Год назад
Hey Art! well all my counters are typical counter height, no intentional coordination there (man your thinking deep!) My hanging drill dividers are a mash of two others videos on the topic so I wouldn't want to make a video on those as is, it's their work. look at t-track drill holder videos. I think I will be making a video on the vertical tool holder step by step soon, ok on cords, they a horrible for storage, I have a few way I do it, also in an upcoming video! sorry not as many answers this time but im trying to crank out those videos for rapid growth. Hopefully I finish with my NEGATIVE Milwaukee tool review tonight and then I have a new shop build video for tomorrow. and then a big battery extravaganza video there after!

Excellent Layout both functional and efficient! Question, what is the floor surfacing and do you like it?
@BitnerBuilt
@BitnerBuilt 2 месяца назад
So it’s a Rock solid epoxy kit from Home Depot and I highly do not recommend it. I hated it. They gave me two bad batches and I had to scrape it off with a remover and do it again and even the final version did not come out that great so I would definitely say if you’re gonna look at an epoxy look somewhere else, I like that it’s smooth and hard but the flakes that I put on the ground wall it does hide dirt if you drop anything like a small nut you’ll never find it again 😂 it is incredibly durable though

I've got a 36" table saw, 14" floor standing bandsaw, floor standing drill press, 8" jointer, 15" planer, lathe, a bunch of cabinets and too racks all in a two car garage and we park are vehicles in there every day. It takes a bit of thought, but it all easily fits. I wouldn't have room for anything else at the moment as my wife likes to have nothing surrounding her vehicle, so her side is mostly off limits.

Yep understood though if we’re not talking tools cnc, table saw, my massive assembly table etc, and just saying the outer peremiter walls. So wood, doing all my walls in French cleat my side counters, overhead cubby’s and the miter station is “around” 13 sheets 1/4, 13 sheets 3/4 and 15 2x4 8ft. I did all of that when I was definitely a beginner and money was a big factor. I did so many things “wrong”, if you look closely in a lot of the stuff all the countertops and the miter station are 2 x 4 frame construction, not cabinetry boxes. (Saved tons of money) You’re looking at current prices at around $1500 US New Jersey.

Nice space utilization, particularly the sides outside of garage door tracks (which is usually dead space anyway). I also like the bin storage for lesser used items stored above the day to day things. Can you give links to the bins and organizers you have used? I am actually really allergic to dust (ironic) so I put a lot of effort into cleaning 1. I always use my dust collector religiously when working with any tool. 2. I clean up every single day, 3. Every other month or so I open both garage doors and use the leaf blower while wearing a full face respirator.
