37 sounds tiny doesn't it? But the Longines Spirit in 37 is in my opinion the gem of the range. There are 3 reasons why this watch just works better at 37, but one small detail they overlooked that keeps it from being perfect.
I love Longines because they’re gorgeous watches with understated elegance and great heritage. A company that doesn’t play marketing games like Rolex which I find appalling for a company that caliber.
After 10 years in the watch hobby Ive gradually come around to thinking watches in The 35-38 mm range just look better. Also I love how unobtrusive they feel on the wrist.Thin and small watches were once a statement of refinement.
Depends on your wrist size. Some people a 42-46 mm looks ridiculous. For me it looks perfect. Howevee i love the look of many 36mm watches that just dont work on my wrist
I agree with you 100% my largest diameter watch is 39mm of which I have 2. I have. 36mm and a 38mm as well. What I’ve learned however, is equally as important is the lug to lug measurement. I personally am happy with 47mm but prefer 43-46mm.
I feel it depends on your wrist size and the look you want to go for. My Seamaster 300m Diver at 42mm was too big for my 6.5 inch wrist and after 3 yrs I sold it for the new Tissot PRX 36mm in gold. For me that size adjustment made me prefer the sligher profile in diameter and thickness. If you have thick wrists then a larger watch is sure better 👌
My 37mm Grand Seiko quartz feels special. I’m still getting used to the smaller size of the dial, and the comfort and quality of the watch are amazing for the money. It is a watch that flies under the radar, which I like.
Great review! I just bought this watch to celebrate my retirement. Everything you say about it is true. I have a 6.75 in. or 17mm wrist and u was worried it would look too small. But with the 45mm lug to lug, and large curved male end links, this watch wears like a 38mm case size. It is super light and, as you say, it just hugs my wrist and is extremely comfortable. The sunburst blue dial is stunning. I’m very happy with this watch!
I have to agree. Even with my large wrist I think smaller watches (40 mm or less) just look better. There was a time where I said it was all dependent on the design of the watch, the shape of the case and lugs, the diameter of the dial etc. And while that is all true, I personally find watches larger than around 41mm almost always disproportionally large. I like that Longines offers a lot of new models that are restrained in terms of size.
I have the Longines RAF watch and I was super impressed with the quality. Especially satisfying for me was how accurate it appeared to be right out of the box. I haven’t broken out the timegrapher in a while, but just by an eyeball test I would say it’s likely my most accurate piece. Longines is doing big things at a great price.
I love the new 37mm spirit, it feels like the next step in my watch collecting journey after my vintage 60s Longines 5-star admiral (the 5-stars being the rating Longines gives their pieces with the highest standard of quality in both finishing and movement regulation). Glad to see the spirit getting the attention it deserves!
The quality of Longines is so good for the price that it's hard for me when searching for a new watch to not look at Longines. I once tried the previous version of the spirit but it was too big because of the lugs. Ended up with the bigeye titanium, which I still adore. I'd love to try the 37 on my wrist. Great video!
I think the review is spot on and that clasp is going to look terrible after some wear. If it had some raised portions to it, maybe it wouldn't be quite the scratch magnet it currently is. I know there are hacks where you can "remove" small scratches, but I try to do as little of that as possible with the watches I own. Longines deserves more love in my opinion. Glad to see you feature them.
I have to agree Max, this is a piece that is on my list to see in the flesh. Most of my watches are on the larger side (divers etc) but over the last year or so I have added some smaller ones to the collection and they work a treat on my 7" wrist. For me the size of the watch has to match it's function so I've not given up on larger diameter watches at all. The smallest one purchased is a Nomos Ludwig 36 that wears bigger than its size due to the thin bezel and it's very slim as well. One that did surprise me though was how well my Blackbay 36 wore, it really works well on my wrist although thicker than the Ludwig it wears a little smaller due to the larger bezel. Different styles wear differently (obviously) but I'll not rule out a smaller watch just because of the dimensions.
This channel, in my view, has the best combination of production quality and intelligent content in the RU-vid watch community. Regarding the watch, I've had my eye on it. I'm a bit of a Longines fanboy with five examples and a 6.5" wrist. This one checks a lot of boxes for me. The clasp seems fine to me too. I like the bold announcement of Longines on it. A comparable watch in terms of size, function, price, and quality might be the Sinn 556a.
A beautiful watch simple, refined. A great heritage that gets overlooked at times. I love these videos of that do everything watch. Not that collecting is bad but, the idea of "if I had to give up all my watches, name that one I had to keep".. this one a bit small for my taste (40mm for me) but, I love the look. Thanks again Max!
Absolutely! Smaller watches are better. What is ideal is a small watch with a correspondingly small strap. I bought this model with the black matte dial and a leather strap. It is stunning. The finishing is superb especially the polished chamfer edge on the case. To my delight, I found the strap fits me perfectly. I have a 160mm wrist. I am always having to use the last or second to last hole on a strap. It fits, but I really cant stand the "overhang". In the case of this watch the strap fits perfectly with only a moderate amount of overhang: I barely see it when I check the time. Longines has really produces something special with this watch.
Nice review, thank you. Looking for a new everyday watch, after selling my OP36, I knew the Spirit 37 mm was the one, as soon as I saw it. Got the champagne colored one a few weeks ago and I love it. Quality wise, I don’t feel it’s a downgrade from the OP, it feels great. I prefer smaller watches and this one is just perfect for my ~17,5 cm wrist. I didn’t get it on the bracelet though, I assume the Oyster bracelet feels better. Got a bunch of different straps for it instead. The accuracy is also great, mine’s about - 1 second pr. day. Overall I’m very happy with it, it’s a awesome watch for the price. 😊
I bought the Spirit 37 with champagne-dial and it´s absolutely stunning. The dial is amazing and reflects the sun in so many different shades, its just beautiful.
After getting my first Sub 16610 back in 1995 it's been nothing but below 39 mm since then. Right now my everyday ticker is the (now discontinued) 37 mm GS SBGR 251 and it's pretty much the perfect GADA piece. 100m of WR with a 72h pwrresrv. Sporty when it needs to be but stylish enough to handle a night out on the town too.
One other small gripe, the lack if a screw down crown : ( But it is still an absolutely fantastic everyday watch and seems like a good Explorer alternative with its entirely own DNA
I agree that’s a bit of a shame. And I definitely agree with the clasp. Thank goodness it has these problems otherwise I would probably dream about getting this too.
Great video Max, a stunning Watch from Longines, and I agree, small is good. However, now and then, that part of us that craves a G Shock needs to be scratched. I went one further, I bought a Victorinox Inox, on a slender wrist. It’s the one giant in my collection. It’s girth is similar to the Breitling 007 wears in Thunderball, except my wrists are nothing like Connery’s. Big mistake? Possibly, but when it arrives I’ll tell you how I feel!
Really nice review of a beautiful watch. Yes the clasp could look a little better or could even have some fine adjusting mechanism…but the watch looks really good especially on a 6.5“ wrist.
39mm is huge? 46mm and up is huge.. 39?? Anything from 38-44mm is average size really. The watches don’t look small or particularly big either. Smaller or bigger than that is more of a niche market.
This is a brilliant watch! 37 mm, 6 o'clock date, gorgeous styling. What's not to love!? I do have to say that clasp is a let down of an otherwise near flawless design... I wonder how this compares to say a Tudor Black Bay 36?
The Tudor is definitely a sturdier watch; 150mt of WR, screw down crown, better clasp. The Longines has a better movement and a dressier look. Both are very well finished.
I have a 37mm Seiko SNK617 and would like to mod but can’t find parts or I’m looking for the wrong thing. Any idea on how to identify which parts would work and from where?
Two other options....FC Highlife and ML Aikon. The quartz Omega AT is in that price range; mine is a 37 or 38mm. Great Video 📹 👍 and I really like Longines but only own one at this time. Also ORIS pointer date ....that's a good Cheers from a Renton Indian Grad :)
On the basis of this and other reviews I bought, in November, One of the 37mm Longines Spirit with a steel bracelet & 1 kink removed. I have other high end watches and antique time-pieces but this is a truly superb watch and there is absolutely nothing that gives me reservations! It is exactly as the reviews have led one to believe!. I am a male man of a certain age, with male hobbies and interests. The Longine Spirit is certainly a "man's watch" both for the young and old alike. Timeless style and un emphasizad class for almost all occasions. Perhaps with evening dress I'd go for the Cartier tank or the little gold Benson but I await that invitation! In the meantime I adore looking at my wrist with it's gleaming gun barrel blued dial telling me that I'm a day older than I was yesterday!!!
-Chronometer -100m water resistance - Anti magnetic - Super nova Swiss lumi - under 2000 USD - Come from one of the best and most famous luxury watch brand (ok, it could be not that famous in your country but in Asia in general, it really is) - Vintage look yet still has the sporty element and feeling. What do you want more from this watch. Im saving money for it now.!!!!
Wearing my bigass P01 while watching this hahah! Love what Longines is doing lately with the Spirit collection. For $2k GADA, I'd nominate anything by Monta (Skyquest, Noble, etc), or just a plain jane BB36 ETA.
Great video! Love this piece and also quite curious about which bracelet you have on your IWC? I thought the Petite Prince bracelet only fit a 40mm case
I need to stop watching your videos before I go broke. Just ordered this watch and it's only been a week since I bought the vintage King Seiko based on your video on that one. Great videos...maybe too good!
Good looking watch. 37mm is a perfect size for collectors with wrists under 7 inches. It would look even better in a no date version. I'd wear it on a leather strap - I do not like the male end links.
Ariel Adams said it well a few years ago that whether you wear t-shirts or long sleeves makes a big difference in how the size fits on you-in addition to your own physical stature, too. I have ones 36mm to 44mm and am fine wearing all of them. It’s about what each person is comfortable with rather that rules and trends.
I was debating between a bb36 silver and this in champagne. Went with the latter due to cosc movement and date, and I LOVE it. It absolutely is my gada watch. Or at least it would be if my gf didn’t already steal it from me 😅 Gotta agree about the clasp- almost seems like an afterthought. Needs on the fly micro adjust and I wish it had the screw down crown of the larger versions. See through caseback would be another “nice to have” but as a whole this 37 spirit is amazing. Gives me vintage OP vibes in a modern package.
@@TYPEV3 hmmm, I guess that's the difference. I've only got one dark blue and rose gold coloured watch, so I'm debating getting another blue one cuz I really like the blue or going with a different colour dial with the champagne. I also dream of getting the Ginza alpinist but I dont knowww 😩 This hobby is stressful hahaha
Great review! I'm currently in the market for a new watch around this price point. I'm torn between the Spirit 37mm and the Tudor Ranger (albeit this case is slightly bigger). I completely agree about your criticisms regarding the clasp however the good comments heavily outweigh the bad. I think I will need to get it on-wrist and make a decision. Thanks for the video.
I’m in a similar position- looking at the ranger, bb58, this 37mm spirit and maybe the new Nomos club sport neomatik The Bb58 was winning easily but this has pulled up neck and neck. The 6oc date is probably more useful for me at work than a bezel and it feels a bit less obvious and classy. First world decisions 😅
Max, again, another excellent review. A similar watch I'm loving, is the zulu that came out in '22. Have you experienced it in person? What are your thoughts? Personally, I love all of the longines and I find they always over deliver. Perhaps I'm debating the zulu so much because I keep coming back to Longines.
A killer watch that’s affordable available and doesn’t skimp on the finishing with amazing case dimensions. Longines hit it out of the park with this one.
I agree with you buddy about the clasp. They should have just put the logo instead of Longines. I am gonna purchase a new watch. It was between the Tudor 54, Longines Legend Diver 36, or the Longines Spirit 37. Because I live in London, I don't want anything to resemble a Rolex (Could get robbed, Shot, or Stabbed) So it's between the Diver or Spirit.
Great watches and the inclusion of a 37 is strong. Absolutely at the level of Tudor/IWC, quality-wise. For me, better design too. My criticism of this watch is double AR coating and (I think) no screw down crown on the 37mm...
I own -happily- the 42 prestige edition, into my 2nd year now , and here is my comment to your review: This is the most precise review of the spirit, and oh my god, finally someone to address the folding clasp problem! Yes, it’s a problem. Those guys created a watch so well thought out, a watch that I have personal experience of people putting it on the wrist, and preferring it, surprised, from their Rolexes and Omegas , a watch that I have tried it together with an IWC pilot 43, and I found my self really asking myself wether I actually see a 5.000 euro difference to the -no doubt- better IWC …. This folding clasp , the one from the prestige edition, is just inconsistent with the rest of the watch . And don’t even get me started with the base butterfly bracelet. Other than that, a truly original piece by Longines, I am happy with the 42 dimension but many people will have to try the other 2 smaller versions. To those worried for the “cut” 3 date window, I have to say that it has worked very well on me . It’s not an “afterthought” like some have said , it is a good schematic balance on the date window, assuming you want a date window, which doesn’t work on the smaller 40 model, and wouldn’t work on 6 position for the large model, where it works perfectly on the 37 model. (…. Think of large empty space on the bottom). This is a true new classic, go for it !
I really like Longines, great history and designs but every time there is one detail that stop me from buying one. I tried the Zulu GMT last weekend, really nice piece but I have something else in mind at that price point ! I found this Spirit to be too big at 40mm, so I’m curious to try the 37mm blue one. Cool video and you’re almost there on the prononciation ;-)
Longines makes some great watches , but I prefer the 40 mm ( I'm 6'3" ,215 lbs) I do agree though with you on " oversized " watches but ; just like a nice suit, one size does not fit all ,and they should be tailored to your individual stature.
No, small watches are not generally better. First of all, it depends on the person: a 36mm diameter just looks ridiculous on a tall and massive person. Secondly, it depends on the model: Some watches have simply too much going on in order to having it all squeeze in - for example, the new IWC Big Pilot Chronographs in 43 mm simply look better than their 41 mm predecessors (just compare the dials to each other). Thirdly, how a watch wears depends in its design as well, not just its diameter. A dive watch below 40mm is ridiculous in my view. Last but not least, in older age larger watches are more legible.
I really like smaller watches are becoming more prevalent since I have somewhat of a smaller wrist at 6.3 inches. I like watches from 34mm-41mm. I know that Timex is considered a budget brand but I'm glad they continually kept bringing out watches in the sub 40mm. When they brought out reissue of the marlin at 34mm and Timex Q at 38mm they found out what people wanted.
Nearly all older guys like me prefer the “smaller” watches. The only guys who wore larger watches were divers. Not web designers, baristas or lawyers. Actual divers. Who dived. For a living. It was a tool. Walking around with a 44mm speedmaster would have been akin to say a carpenter walking around with a pneumatic hammer on his day off.
The size of the watch face matters most to me. Interestingly, my 43.5mm Omega PO, 43mm Longines HydroConquest and 38.5mm Sinn 556A all have 33mm faces. Good lume is a must.
I have small wrist and I already have the 40mm in bracelet. But last week I tried the 37mm and it felt small. Because the dial all around has the ring and the small numbers. Although the 40mm is larger for me I still find it more appealing. Plus the screw down crown and the sand blasted hands.
@@WatchCrunchOfficial I believe they didn't do the same in the 37mm version because they thought women will not be comfortable with it because this version is targeting women audience as well
Really like this watch! To be honest, I would prefer is the clasp was completely unbranded, or maybe just had Longines’ winged logo. The fully spelled out name does seem a bit out of place. The only watch I can think of that might give this one a run for its money is the Nomos Club. Not sure what price that one comes in at with the automatic movement though.
Really want to get the black and champagne dial versions in hand. Been thinking about trading my vintage datejust on for something more modern and this may fit the bill very nicely.
How does this piece compare to a bb36 on the wrist? I have small wrists myself of only 16,5cm but since I am 1.90 tall the bb36 seemed like a womens watch to me whereas the bb41 was slightly too bulky for my taste. If this is a bit in between it might just be my perfect watch.
The only thing separating Longines and Omega are the movements. The build quality and finishing of Longines watches in some cases surpasses some Omega's and to be quite frank, I prefer the highly modded ETA movements Longines uses. They are less finicky and just as accurate. I own a few modern Omega's but reach for my Longines watches most often. That being said, the 37mm Spirit is outstanding!
Great review. Just curious whether this could be considered a field watch and handle outdoor activities hiking, camping etc? The band looks brushed which might handle scratches and the like.
Watches used to be way smaller before, which was good. Even 36 used to be a large sized case. I still follow this line of thinking still when I get watches, I consider 40mm to be too big already.
I have the watch and yes, I can confirm you can fit normal springbars. The watch case has no special modifications for the quick release bracelet, just standard holes
Beautiful watch. Ive never been more certain of spending money on a watch than this Longines, and I've had the 3 Speedmasters, 4 Seamasters, Rolex Sub, many microbrands and many Hamilton/Tissot/Seikos.
Hi watchCrunch!😊 What's your favorite color of the 3? (Black, Blue or Champagne) Planning to get one very soon... Hoping for an answer...🙏 Thank you & more power...
I have narrow wrists and anything over 43mm makes me look like Flava-Flav.....I just bought a 38mm for the first time and at first glance it isnt really noticeable. HOWEVER.....it really does look better to me and it has a domed crystal which makes it appear a bit larger. THIS Longines is an awesome small watch, no doubt.
Beautiful watch. The "Longines" on the clasp is a little much, especially for the price you're paying. Nothing I wear has a huge logo on it and I'm not going to start with a luxury watch.
